Polyfill vs. Micropore Tape
    #5770813 - 06/20/06 12:26 AM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I was just wondering the advantages which one has over the other, or do they both work the same way?

pretty much the same but I'd feel safer with the poly.

Can cotton wool be used in place of polly? Or is pollyfill the american name for cotton wool?

No, cotton wool will rot. Poly is that stuff used in fish tank filters that looks like cotton but is a synthetic.

If I put a double layer of micropore tape over my holes on my jars would that work better than just one layer?

Definitely not that will only hinder gas exchange.

i just learned that lesson.... there are little holes in the tape that get overlapped with two layers. i use one layer of tape and one layer of tyvek. plus coffee filters if im feeling fancy.

There are three materials you can use to allow gas to exit the container but not allow contaminants in; polyfill, tyvek and micropore.

Micropore is really only used to "heal" injection points. I find it's hard to get off lids and almost impossible to get off lids that have been PCd. I only use micropore to tape up injection points on tyvek (see sig).

Tyvek is most often found by shroomers in your local post office in the form of free mailers. It's that waxy-ish feeling material. I love this stuff so much it gives me an erection just thinking about it.

Polyfill is found in craft stores though you can find it in stuffed animals and some pillows (obviously not the ones with feathers). The only time I really use poly is to fill in the anti-vacuum ports on my jars.

My personal method of setting up jars is to drill a 5/8" hole in the lid. Fill the jar with WBS, cover with lid. I prefer sticky-side down but some people like it the other way. Cover lid with tyvek then attach ring and tighten. Then, when I inoculate, I just push the syringe through the tyvek right above the drilled hole and add 1 cc of spore solution to the jar. I'll do 3 jars then apply micropre to the needle hole. One nice technique I recently read is to pre-cut all the micropore tape pieces you'll need and then, just before applying the tape to the innoc point, dip into alchol and then place over hole. The alcohol will keep the area contam-free and quickly evaporate and then the piece will stick properly.

As far as LC jars go, I like to use windshield wiper tubing, polyfill and self-healing RTV injection ports:

So no micropore there at all.

I know this is way more than you asked for, but...

splif
