Use a bigger chunk. The more you use to inoculate the faster the WBS will colonize, lowering the chance of contam. Crumble the cake and after you do the transfer, shake the hell out of the WBS jar.

are you saying crumble the whole cake? Also can a cake be used that has been birthed a couple days after being dunked? It has no pins and I have an extra to try with the grain.

A whole cake would be overkill. My friend uses a couple tablespoons of colonized substrate to inoculate pint size WBS jars. Be sure to use the INSIDE of the cake to lower contam risk. You can also soak the cake chunk in 3% peroxide for a few seconds before crumbling.
