Post workout soreness
    #18056404 -

It's been a long time since I hit the gym, so I decided to get back in to things yesterday.  I figured I'd work out the triceps.  I did bench, dips, tricep pull downs, overhead tricep extension and military press.  Man did I loose a lot of strength, I expected that so I took it low and slow.  I am so sore this morning it's ridiculous, that's what I get for slacking off for over a year and a half.  My triceps burn with the ferocity of a thousand suns.

Anything i can do to relieve the soreness a bit? I remember hearing glutamine is good for post-workout.

The number one relief for me is plenty of stretching and isometrics when i'm sore. I try to drink as much water as possible post-workout, I can almost feel it flushing lactic acid from me. Glutamine is good and creatine as well as an easily digestible source of protein to get things rebuilt in a hurry. B vitamins help your body use the food and supplements you eat more efficiently which helps speed recovery among other things so I hope you were already taking those.

Wow great info, I used to always drink protein shakes after a workout.  I completely forgot about that.  I remember reading that you want take in some easily digestible protein within a half hour after working out.

Man that soreness is brutal after a long break....I hardly get sore anymore and if I do its for a short while.

Taking a protein shake right after a workout isn't crucial. As long as your diet is good (every day, all week) you will be just fine. The soreness is an indicator that you tore muscle tissue and now is the time to eat high quality foods on a constant daily basis. Creatine will help speed up recovery if you're interested in that.

I've read somewhere that goes in order of importance:

1: Water
2: Diet
3: Sleep

My personal favourite foods for building muscle are beans, lentils and tuna.

Keep at it! Oh and don't forget to throw a banana in your protein shakes.

Sleep is a big one, in the past 2 years I've been more physically inactive than I've been my whole life.  I've also experienced insomnia for the first time in my life, I know they're related.  I had too much energy that I wasn't using, I'd become restless at night as a result.  I slept like a baby the past few nights though.

I'll have to lean down my diet gradually.  I always liked a high protein diet though, you can eat a shitload and lean up at the same time.

I got my shopping list going- Chicken breast, Fish, egg whites, beans, low fat cottage cheese, whole wheat everything, 90% lean ground sirloin, brown rice, veggies, low fat deli meats

If you're just now getting back in the swing of things, I highly recommend this program.  I'm just about done with it and it has totally transformed my body.
