Nope just competing with myself.  I may do a race in the future.  I also like the way this diet makes me feel.  At the end of the day everyone is entitled to their own opinion.  To each his own.

If you're going veg, make sure you know all the things you need to do to keep yourself healthy without meat. For example, you need to make sure you're still getting enough iron because iron from non meat sources is non-heme iron and so it doesn't absorb as readily as heme iron (heme iron only comes from blood). Also, make sure you're still getting your daily recommendations of protein because protein is essential to so many bodily functions. The same thing goes for fats.

wise words, I'd love to expand on it but I'm being a lazy now.

BTW, some types of bee keeping you have to kill the colony, in other types of
bee keeping there's usually a number of deaths, so honey=murder and there's
no such thing as 100% vegan

I've never seen any pictures of living cavemen.
Something to do with the glaring anachronism, or something like that.

Not to mention it's bad for your heart.  Your heart after all is a muscle.  My dad's cardiologist does not like it at all when his patients go for a vegan diet.  You need protein, it's too easy to not get enough with a vegan diet.

Op mentioned something about the vegan diet helping him with sports.  All I can say is that there's a reason most athletes aren't vegans.

It depends on the sport and the individual.  So the fat from red meat does wonders for the heart?  Protein deficiency does not exist if adequate calories are consumed. 10g of carbs per kilo of body weight.

I tend not to guzzle it down like water.  Also there is such a thing as lean red meat.  I often eat 98%lean ground sirloin for example.

That makes no sense.  That's like saying you won't have a vitamin deficiency if you eat only saltine crackers, just as long as you eat enough calories worth.

From fruits and vegetables.  Excuse my lack of clarity.

So we are omnivores. You can quote the WHO all day long but any competitive athlete striving to be the best he can, is going to take the advice of the tops in whatever sport. Be it bike racing, weightlifting, swimming, gymnastics, hockey, skiing etc etc. Read and educate yourself. So you gain 5 lbs if four of that is muscle you have more power to turn the cranks on that long hill climb do you get it? Exercise breaks down muscle fibers. What are muscle fibers? Erm protein. They need to rebuild.

I think they would be tough and stringy, IMHO road kill is a better choice it has already been tenderized by a 4000 lb mallet .

Protein deficiency does exist. You may not know how essential proteins are but they're essentially responsible for all the signaling in your body and they're what allows you to survive. I broke down how much you need, you should go back and look at that post. I'm pretty well versed in nutrition, I know what I'm talking about here.

Quote:
Fat: 20 - 35% of total calories (average 30%)
Protein: 10 – 35% (average 15%)
Carbohydrates: 45 – 65% (average 55%)

You can not eat meat and get enough protein, like through eating nuts for example, but fruits and veggies are mostly water and vitamins. If you're not meeting the above recommendations, your cells start literally breaking down your body to be able to function, especially if you're an athlete who works your body hard.

well check this dude...

i was a vegetarian for six years. in that time i generally did well, but a few things i noticed:

-the resiliency or toughness of the muscles isn't exactly optimal. they seem less 'elastic', so building the muscle needed to do heavy lifting type tasks(or ditch digging, cutting wood, things like that) is difficult, as compared to an omnivore diet.

-it does seem like being vegetarian/vegan has the possibility of being bad for the heart, as it is a muscle. meat contains highest levels of CoenzymeQ10 which is essential in maintaining high function of the cardiovascular system/heart. i noticed over the years that my heartbeat was sometimes weak, or at times had the feeling of being strained.

-it's true, you won't hold close to the same amount of fat reserves as you do as an omnivore. you won't have to try to stay skinny, you just will. this has drawbacks especially if you find yourself in rugged conditions where a food source might not be available for a period of time. you will probably not fare well as a hunter/gatherer or warrior being a vegetarian.

-you DO however get more agile, nimble, and fluent with your movements.

-sometimes, as a vegetarian, if you're not getting everything you need which is difficult at times especially if you're low on money, it will feel (IME) like sort of like your organs are straining. they become sore and achy with a proportionally lower amount of impact on them then they would if you were a well-rounded omnivore.

this is just IME, six years of it.

Joie your recommendations are roughly correct but for a moderately competitive athlete I would up the proteins to the high side and the fats as well for energy production as well. and maybe keep the carbs like 35-40% . You can always supplement vitamins other than B4. with not too much trouble.

I've been on a plant based diet for more than a year now, and I feel the best I ever have in my life.  Everything the OP is saying is true.  I barely eat, and a good 75% of my diet are plants.  The amount of energy I have is ridiculous.  I've had weekends where I bike like 80 miles or more, and I barely feel worn out.  I don't even do any sort of training.  Just yoga.

Keep doing your thang, OP.  Don't listen to the ignorance :hook:

The ignorance of nutritional science? Go study what your body uses carbs, proteins, vitamins and fats for on a cellular level and tell me again who is ignorant.

A plant based diet can be fine but you have to be really mindful and careful that you're still adequately treating your body. It's ignorant to think you can just switch to all plants and not supplement the things your body needs that most plants don't have. You can go veg and be 100% healthy but you have to analyze what nutrients you're getting and if the levels are sufficient. That's all anyone is saying.
