Uh, she's not talking about a lecture at school, she's talking about someone telling her specifically to stop eating meat.

i don't understand why you are so agressive about that?
maybe because you eat meat?
WE ARE WHAT WE EAT

Yeah, we're meat.

I'm proud to be a vegetarian.
and i also suggest people not to eat meat.

I'm proud to eat meat, and I suggest you do the same.

It thus experiences fear and releases into its system adrenalin and other chemicals from the endocrine glands which are not helpful for meditation

Thank you Ram Das, for completely making that up.

1-i thought it was a lecture,so yeah its not good to insist on smthing, try to force someone.
2-what i was trying to say with 'WE ARE WHAT WE EAT' was what we eat affects the nature of the body cells and organs and the way they function.i didn't think that you would take that like Yeah, we're meat.
:rotfl:
3-does eating meat makes you healthier,or helps you about your spiritual growth?why you are proud with eating animals?
4-well ram dass didn't make that up.there are several explanations about that issue.little search from internet you can find lotsa but sure you can find oposite of that explanations, that is internet.
what i learned from a lecture in university about vegetarianism from a ph.d. was what ram dass saying.

ahh by the way,
i saw your copy paste a few posts above,
charles darwin father of evolution theory believes that human kind is vegetarian,he was also a vegetarian.
so here is my scientifitic claim then..

Good thing meat contains many vitamins and lots of proteins needed for survival.

3-does eating meat makes you healthier,or helps you about your spiritual growth?why you are proud with eating animals?

Eating meat can make you quite healthy. Of course, eating way too much of it (just like eating too much sugary fruits, or too much soy) can have negative consequences.

Why wouldn't meat help spiritual growth? Is there a strict set of rules/things that are the only ones that allow spiritual growth?

We can improve spiritually, only if we follow YOUR guidelines for morality?

4-well ram dass didn't make that up.there are several explanations about that issue.little search from internet you can find lotsa but sure you can find oposite of that explanations, that is internet.

People who claim that eating meat is somehow bad for meditation probably have pre-existing biases that won't really allow for any kind of reliable test.

charles darwin father of evolution theory believes that human kind is vegetarian,he was also a vegetarian.
so here is my scientifitic claim then..

What the hell does that have to do with anything? Darwin (who wasn't the father of the theory of evolution, he was the father of natural selection) spent most of his time studying birds, how the hell does that qualify him to speak about the natural human diet? Also, he lived like 150 years, which was well before many modern discoveries. Am I supposed to just blindly accept what he says because he's a respected scientist?

I would also like to add that consuming meat and fully participating in the suffering of sentient creatures is directly contrary to my spiritual beliefs and practice.

I would also like to add that meat-eaters lecture others about the greatness of eating meat just as much as the zealous vegans/vegetarians - if not more. Whenever I calmly mention that I do not eat, meat-eaters will nearly always tell me how much I am missing and how silly I am. Whenever someone tells me about how they eat meat (and knowing that I am a vegetarian), I normally pay no mind because diet is a personal choice. If the discussion goes further, I will discuss why I do not participate in the meat industry.

That said, meat eaters are often quite zealous and proselytizing; they are obviously upset that someone else lives their life differently - many of you do not realize how much you do this.

ELF is more about destruction. ALF is about rescuing and nuturing animals via direct action. Big difference. ALF does resort to property destruction on occasion, but they are far more discriminating then the ELF. The motivations are also different: ELF wants destruction of industrial society in general while ALF seeks to liberate puppies and other defenseless creatures from torture.

re: prostelyizing vegans: some vegans/vegetarians do try to convince others, but most dont. I never bother anyone because diet is a personal choice - I?ll debate only if in a debating situation.

peace

I checked the page. These are exactly the kind of people who give animal rights activists a bad name. They also do MANY times more damage to animals and the ecosystem than they do good.

According to their own magazine, Bite Back, they have just released 1000 minks in sweden.

Well, MINKS ARE PREDATORS WHO DO NOT NATURALLY LIVE IN SWEDEN. THE SWEDISH ECOSYSTEM (or scandinavian ecosystem in general) CANNOT HANDLE 1000 MINKS RUNNING LOOSE, ESPECIALLY IN THE BEGINNING OF WATERFOWL AND OTHER BIRDS'S NESTING PERIODS. RELEASED MINKS HAVE CAUSED PERMANENT DAMAGE TO THE SCANDINAVIAN ECOSYSTEM ALREADY. WHEN RELEASED THEY WILL BREED EXPONENTIALLY AS THEY HAVE NO NATURAL ENEMIES HERE. MINKS HAVE ALREADY DRIVEN MANY BIRD SPECIES NEAR EXTINCTION, AND HAVE COMPLETELY ANNIHILATED OTHERS, SUCH AS Mustela lutreola IN FINLAND.

And no, this is not fur manufacturer propaganda. I spend most of my summers in the finnish archipelago where you can see mink damage in action.

I am 100% against fur growing. I have very green ideals, which is why
I will continue to shoot every wild mink I see, as I have done in the past.

Idiots who don't understand the consequences of their actions will always end up doing more harm than they do good.

:enraged: :enraged:

minks in sweden aside, do you not see the good in rescuing beagles from being tortured needlessly in labs? Keep in mind that most ALF actions result in the animals being taken to hidden sanctuaries (i.e. farms) so they can live under the care of the ALF allies. Most of the animals do not "run free" in the wild - they are taken to safe locations.

yes, there are strict set of rules in eastern disiplines.
you have to apply that diet for your spritual growth.
and these disiplines that i follow.
and most effective ways they present you.
killing an animal,or by eating be in that process is also bad for your karma.

what i believe is,
if i can live my life without harming an animal, why should i eat meat?

If peace and harmony are goal of one's spirituality, then participating in the needless suffering of living creatures will be contradiction.

I'm a vegetarian myself. I never try to make people convert but if the discussion comes up, I kindly express my views, without trying to judge the other persons choices. Also as the dominant paradigm now is meat eating, you generally don't notice the pressures vegetarians face for their ethical choices. Just so people know about the opposite extremes in the issue...

I am against vivisection to an extent, but I have a hard time drawing a moral line on where to cross.

Dogs, monkeys, cats, etc... I think should never be experimented on.

But I'm not sure of the guidelines in which a particular animal is off-limits.

I think its equally bad to say all animals should not be used in research. Rats, rabbits, etc... should be used in testing.

dude, this thread was over a year old.  I don't even remember where I had the conversation about meat.

How was I being aggressive by being annoyed?  Was I hostile to the person?  Because that's what aggressive means...well, let me show you:

ag?gres?sive
adj.
Characterized by aggression: aggressive behavior.
Inclined to behave in an actively hostile fashion: an aggressive regime.
Assertive, bold, and energetic: an aggressive sales campaign.
Of or relating to an investment or approach to investing that seeks above-average returns by taking above-average risks.
Fast growing; tending to spread quickly and invade: an aggressive tumor.
Characterized by or inclined toward vigorous or intensive medical treatment: an aggressive approach to treating the infection.
Intense or harsh, as in color.

Um, no I wasn't aggressive or hostile to the person.  I especially take issue with your comment that I am "aggressive because I eat meat."

In my situation, the vegan was the one who was aggressively interrupting my lunch.

I don't understand how you can make such extreme leaps of logic like you did!

So I have a question for you:

1. Do you truly believe only meat-eaters are aggressive?

Because that seems pretty illogical to me.

People can eat whatever the fuck they want.  Different strokes for different folks.  I don't get off telling people what they should and shouldn't eat.

My eating habits are MUCH different then they were a year ago.  I no longer eat beef...haven't had anything from a cow in over 7 months.  I now drink only Soy Milk.  I use turkey when a recipe calls for meat.

For eating habits to truly changes, it takes more then a day and a lecture, Butterflydawn.

Re: When a vegan lectures you on the evils of meat [Re: Phluck]

Phluck, nice article. Its greatest point is that it was written by a vegetarian. Although he may be a primatologist and know much more than me, I still question his conclusions. It felt like most of the article wasn't based on solid findings and was very subjective, which resembles the state of that type (anthropological) of science, which is very controversial and inconclusive. Here are some things that don't click for me.

" Nearly all plant eaters have fermenting vats (enlarged chambers where food sits and microbes attack it). Ruminants like cattle and deer have forward sacs derived from remodeled esophagus and stomach. Horses, rhinos, and colobine monkeys have posterior, hindgut sacs. Humans have no such specializations."

The very first word of the paragraph indicates that humans may well be exempt. Humans are neither ruminants nor are they designed to eat grasses and treetop leaves. For one, humans cannot reach treetops. For another, humans are specially adapted (through color vision, grinding teeth, opposable thumbs, etc.) to eat fruits. Humans do not eat like rhinos and horses; however that does not make them less of an herbivore.

"Relative number and distribution of cell types, as well as structural specifications [none mentioned], are more important than overall length of the intestine to determining a typical diet. Dogs are typical carnivores, but their intestinal characteristics have more in common with omnivores. Wolves eat quite a lot of plant material."

Dogs are not carnivorous; they are omnivorous. That's why we feed them all that corn and rice. And like all true omnivores, the first things wolves eat is the stomach of their prey- that contains all the plants it has just eaten.

Herbivores have intestines 10 to 12 times the length of their bodies, humans' are 10 to 11 times the length of their bodies. Whereas carnivorous animals have intestines 3 to 7 times the length of their bodies. The reason for this is that these animals are literally eating decaying matter and require quick expell. We, on the other hand, have very convoluted intestines. With such long and convoluted alkaline intestines, meat can stay in the human body for as much as 3 to 4 days before passing through. During this time it is decomposing and putrefying at our constant 96.8 degree of body heat. This putrefication releases and sends toxins throughout the body and is one of the major causes of colon and prostate problems.

anyway, those are just my thoughts.

Not entirely accurate. Lamarck and others proposed early evolutionary ideas before Darwin did. The unique part of Darwin's explanation was natural selection, which proposed a mechanism for how evolution worked.

yes, there are strict set of rules in eastern disiplines.

Same with western ones. They don't necessarily make any sense though.

Yeah, it reeks of unoriginality... I prefer to let them know I respect their position in life (and admire their choice) so the least they can do is respect mine... or at least not bother me about it.

I've found most vegans are reasonable people, as long as you don't give them the same horse-shit "I LOVE MEAT LOLZ!" response.

Exactly, it seems the meat-eaters have more than made up for the disparity between self-righteous meat-eaters and self-righteous vegans.

Vegetarians will usually casually tell me, "Oh yeah, I'm vegetarian" and I'm like OK cool. They're around meat-eaters all day so most are cool w/ it-- but when somebody mentions they're vegan the nearest numbskull is like "WHY DON'T YOU EAT MEAT?! ANIMALS TASTE GOOD I EAT MEAT ALL THE TIME! HAR HAR HAR" Yeah, have fun w/ your rectal cancer too.

I'm no vegan but I eat meat in moderation, and I respect their choice.
