Fruitarian Diet
#14450122 - 05/14/11 09:00 AM (12 years, 8 months ago) |
|

I was listening to TM and he made a brief comment about how our ancestors ate mostly fruits and insects which got me thinking
is it possible to live off an entirely fruit based diet? the insects were obviously a protein source and I'm not even aware if any fruit contains protein I'm also sure the high levels of sugars might be unhealthy
this is mainly a "what if" thread but I would love to cut back on processed foods and eat healthier I find it extremely difficult to do and I think vegetarianism is foolish and as it currently stands I eat almost no fruit but I could see this as being a much more appealing option

The body is a remarkable thing. I watched a programme about a woman who has only eaten crisps for the last 30 years.
She was fine, though her skin, hair, nails and teeth were horrible.
I think she'd have faired better on fruit-only though.

so it IS possible then? I assume it's all the sugars that make them fat? although nut do contain large amounts of fat
could it also due to the fruits/nut that they have access to? I mean a diet of coconuts might fare differentially than one of bananas or pomegranates

An all fruit diet would make you somewhat starved for proteins and essential amino acids, not to mention fats (you do need some fat in your diet) methinks. A good balanced diet is the wisest course. And a lot of folks could do with eating more fruits and veggies, but don't go overboard on one particular class of food.

I'm curious as to why you think vegetarianism is foolish but you are willing to possibly eat an all-fruit diet? The latter seems far more foolish to me. At least a vegetarian diet allows a great range of diverse foods, something that all nutritionalists agree is the foundation of any healthy diet.
As far as what makes Samoans fat, I really wouldn't take the idea that they eat nothing but fruits and nuts as any kind of fact. Nor would I accept such an argument about our ancestors without seeing a lot of evidence.
Why do you find it so difficult not to eat a lot of processed foods? God knows there's enough information available. Is it a time issue?

samoans are fat from eating the white mans food for so long for example, if you were to look at the original sketches that were made on James Cooks ship when they first discovered the hawaiian islands. the islanders were depicted as very lean healthy warriors.
an all fruit diet wouldn't be very healthy, mainly due to lack of fat, and to a much lesser extent amino acids.

well it depends more on the "why" that I find foolish the people who clam they are doing it for health reasons than have to take hand fulls of supplements
I dated a girl for awhile that was veggie and was willing to compromise but that brings me to my next issue, I don't like most vegetarian meals it's not that I don't like vegetables but most dishes have chick peas or mushrooms or a handful of other thing I don't like because they contain the missing nutrients
I don't think I'll ever give up any one food group it's just an idea I'm tossing around but to do it for a couple of months each year could be an option

Some notable advocates of fruitarianism, diets which may be considered fruitarian or lifestyles that, in part, included an all fruit diet have included August Engelhardt,[34] Arnold Ehret,[35] Raymond W. Bernard,[36] and Anne Osborne.[37][38] Essie Honiball[39][40] also adhered to a fruitarian diet for some time. Others such as Ross Horne[41] and Viktoras Kulvinskas[42] appeared to only describe the fruitarian diet.[43] Some, like Johnny Lovewisdom, experimented with different diets, including juicy fruitarianism,[44] liquidarianism (juices only),[45] vitarianism (fruit, vegetables, raw dairy)[46] and breatharianism.[47] Others like author Morris Krok, who at stages during his life, lived "only on fruits",[48] allegedly advised against a diet of "only fruit", [49] although it was subsequently reported that Krok's diet consisted of "just fruit",[50] with dietary practices of fruitarians as varied as definitions of the term 'fruitarianism'. Diet author, Joe Alexander lived for 56 days on juicy fruits.[51]
[edit] Historical figuresMohandas Karamchand Gandhi, a political and spiritual leader of India, sustained a fruitarian diet for 5 years.[52] He apparently discontinued the diet due to pleurisy, a pre-existing condition, after pressure from a Dr. Jivraj Mehta.[53][54] Ben Klassen, white supremacist, founder of the Creativity Movement,[55] and author of The White Man’s Bible, advocated a fruitarian diet to include fruits, vegetables and nuts.[56] Idi Amin, the Ugandan military dictator, became a fruitarian in Saudi Arabia during retirement.[57]

It is actually very easy to get all the nutrients you need from a vegetarian diet. A vegan diet is harder, but vegetarianism is very easy. Even in a vegan diet however, the only supplement that is necessary is vitamin B12. There are plenty of B vitamins in eggs.
Of course you have to be willing to eat the right kinds of foods but that's always true.

Paging MOTH . . . is she still in HI living in a commune type deal, eating a fruitarian diet?
Fruit only seems an inadequate diet to me though. Then again I haven't studied it but it is extremely hard to imagine one getting ell necessary nutrients.

I don't see what you are trying to say but you sure are ignorant.
Fiber, whether soluble or not, does not cause diarrhea. Constipation? Maybe, if you don't get enough water, but not diarrhea.

Insoluble fiber helps prevent constipation. People who have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) may find that too much insoluble fiber worsens diarrhea.
Ok it worsens but does not necessarily causes diarrhea. But it definitely doesn't cause constipation. Unripe fruit and undigested vegetables do cause diarrhea. If tomorrow you went on an all fruit diet you'd likely get diarrhea. And as for being ignorant, i give what i get. Sarcasm is ignorant.

actually, raw food diets have been known to completely CURE diabetes.
and to the OP, MOST of the fruits we have nowadays have been bred for sweetness, and size. Basically, they didn't exist that way before agriculture and civilizations. Which was already after many generations of eating animal products.
in a way, human beings have been domesticated through our own domestication of plants and animals.

Corn, potatoes, carrots, pineapple, watermelon, banana, dates, grapes, apricots, mango, and oranges- All spike blood glucose levels. Plenty more im sure.
Low grain/low carb, high protein (primarily meat diets like Atkins) have been shown to completely cure type 2 diabetes

Why do people need to go to extremes with their diets?? The key to being healthy is to eat a balanced diet. Including fruits, vegetables, lean meats, whole grains & plenty of water. This is basically what my diet consists of and I am very healthy
For protein though, you could eat peaches, pineapple, avocado, watermelon, apples, oranges & tomatoes.
(those are in order from highest protein content to lowest). It'd be easier just to eat meat or nuts though

i don't think it's for everybody, and is definitely not for me. i practice ayurveda and need a more balanced diet with a healthy mixture of grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, veggies and fruit. MOTH has been a fruitatarian for a long time though and it seems to be the perfect diet for her!

not true, logistics is the issue, you can always get proteins in a vegan diet but the complete proteins become the issue, many people wont have access to what's needed for a healthy vegan diet... if you're in a big city it shouldnt be an issue but the further out you go the harder it would become
