Freeform dreads
    #17965480 -

Started letting my hair grow out about 2 years ago, it's pretty curly. Noticed that it's getting sorta matted together in the back and was wondering if this is the beginning stages of dread locks. I sorta bathe regularly and wash my hair but I'm unable to unlock the knots forming in the back.
I can post a pic but it's kinda hard to see since its in the back of my head..
Any people with dreads that can elaborate on what I can expect??

This doesn't sound like you "sort of" bathe or wash your hair regularly.
It sounds more like you seldom perform either, and you have nasty hair.

Google has a lot of answers about dreads.

I always thought you had to stop washing your hair for dreadlocks to form naturally, are you telling me that dreadlocks can form naturally by just letting her hair grow and not getting it "thinned out"? :datass:

Because I would so consider doing that, I just need to clean my hair now and again...

Sorta = about 3 showers a week.
Hair is clean right now, doesn't smell bad at all.
Thank you for the link however, looking at some of the before and afters really makes me not wanna have my hair lock together like that.
Like, some (most) of them look kinda fucked up.

gulper: well i've been growing my hair out for 2 years, never had it trimmed or anything and i believe it is naturally clinging together. So have at it man

Okay, that's much better.
I was waiting for you to be like "whatever bro, I shower once a month. :blazed:"

From my understanding, dreads are very demanding on the scalp and aren't something to lightly commit to.

If you had brushed your hair occasionally, this wouldn't have happened. It's actually easier for it to knot up the cleaner and drier it is. Solution: brush your hair. If it's too bad you might have to cut it off though. Accidental dreads tend to look like shit; in advanced stages, literally.

Interesting.
I think it would also prove to be troublesome in the work place. Not now but in the future when I want to pursue a well paying career.
Long hair is bad enough but when I put it back it doesn't look too bad, but I'd imagine it difficult to look professional with dread locks and shit.

-Oh and it's too curly to run a comb or brush through. I use to be able to do it in the shower but not anymore. I just run my fingers through it to get what knots I can out.

:hmm: interesting, I had been growing my hair for about half a year. I went to get it cut about a month ago but only to trim the edges (they were just all over the place) I never got it thinned out so it's still quite thick.

Yeah dreadlocks have been on my mind lately, they're pretty cool on guys and sexy as fuck on women (it's a shame there aren't any girls that live near me that think the same thing )

I would recommend against dreads. I had caveman dreads for a couple of years, and imo it's not worth the hassle. People will treat you differently. The dreads will be getting in your way all the time.

They make it a pain to wash your hair. They stay wet forever. You gotta use special shampoo or they will collect residue. If you don't dry them out well, mold starts to happen.

It's a lot to deal with. I'm much more happy now that I have short, non-dreadlock hair again.

At the very least, don't go "freeform".

If your hair is curly they will probably turn out alright if you do as you're doing. That was my experience anyway. I would let my hair go that way again but there is a lot of stigma attached to it, not something I care that much about except that I have kids and people are judgemental enough as it is. Generally speaking, most people will assume that any white guy with dreads is a weed smoker.

As they assume now anyway just because it's long lol.

Yeah I guess a lot of people assume I smoke weed too because I have long hair and a beard, but I can appear a little more like an upstanding citizen (e.g. long haired computer nerd) when I put my hair in a ponytail. That's the theory anyway.

It looks like your hair type is well suited to this. If you don't want it to dread then try using conditioner before trying to comb/brush it out.
