:dancer: PINS :dancer: pics coming soon. I dont want to throw this thread off though, its a cake of wbs (corn/millet/rice), coffee, verm @ 1:1:1. It was an experiment to see how to grow a cake (its my first cake ever) and to see how this strain operates under which fruiting conditions. on that note, T=60°F constant, RH=+90/95% constant. my humble set up is working like a charm. and no I never dunked it, but I was considering it and I'm glad I had too much to do this weekend. I will dunk for subsequent flushes though. on a side note, qt jars in pc now for final transfer to aspen for hopefully a godzilla flush.

Here's what my cake fc set-up looks like in action:

Here's day 1ish of pins:

Here's day 4 of pins:

2/8/13-Day 5

this post will [continue to] be updated with a better timelapse.

Does my results look ok so far or should I be putting my effort into more fae, which is my main concern? Stats right now: T=59°F, H=>90%, FAE=my fan is turned off at night but I've opened three 1.25" holes to allow for fae to flow, and the set-up is elevated within the reservoir to allow for fae to enter and wick up moisture from the bottom of the f.c.

Your pic there looks exactly how my phoenix oysters look right now (aside from the color).  I kind of had the same question about FAE though and whether that's how they should look...

[edited my above post with pictures]

They seem small for oysters but again, t=58/60°F so maybe they're just slow. Looking at the last one, when do i pick these little guys?

I think when they're all trumpet shaped like that it means they want more FAE.  At least that's what I read from a TC in this post: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/13101517#13101517

Yours are doing much better than mine though, which dried up and died!  Looks like they'll be delicious pretty soon...

mycofever, thanks for the positivity! if I can do it, i know you can. oeric, thanks for your props, means a lot.
forrester, how are you hydrating your fc? i think it doesn't get easier than the macgyvered humidifier and perlite reservoir, for smaller projects, that is.

as far as this cake goes, i just picked the oysters. see last picture, they're about that size but a little bigger!
final weight was 36g for this little cake. but remember, this is not my final project, this is more of the midterm. This thread was mainly for the aspen, which I hope will be MUCH more successful than my lunch tomorrow, but they do smell good:thumbup:

as far as the aspen goes, it's soaking still, is three days too much? probably. is that bad though? I'm waiting for my quart jars to finish up so it might be a couple more days. i had to turn off the heating element for my fc so it dropped to about 60 for a few days so colonization was slow.

I have other little projects that I'm doing as well, 12 1/2 pint jars of 9 different subs, so far the wettest wbs are best, but i also used cotton balls (ripped up) which are colonizing much better than i'd expected, just coffee, coffee/verm/perlite (looks like a giant oreo while colonizing), some yarn, and something else that i can't remember right now.
and i did a totally non-sterile experiment with dry popcorn kernels, leftover colonized grain, and a plastic container for dried bananas that i cut a hole in and polyfilled. sprayed plenty of water on it to a rough field capacity and let it sit. that thing colonized within 3 days fully and the popcorn kernels (being organic) all are sprouting, so i'm gonna just throw some soil on it all and see what happens.
yay experimentation! :havesomescience:

I'm using a SGFC, I just discovered I have to pour water in the perlite every couple of days or it dries out.  It's ridiculously dry around here right now...

No big deal though I just pulled off the aborts, got the humidity back up and they're popping out everywhere again!

You pulled off the aborts eh? That's a great idea. I think I'd have gotten a lot more from my first flush if I did that. Glad to hear it's goin good. One thing I read that I think really works and you might want to try if you're not employing this already is to elevate the sgfc with holes in the bottom. I think it was anno who said the air moving in from the bottom wicks up moisture from the perlite and pulls it into your fc. Worked for me anyway

Yeah I wasn't entirely sure if you were supposed to pull them off, but they didn't seem to be doing any good so off they went.  A few days in good humidity and the whole block just blew up, I think it even re-pinned out of the holes where I ripped the aborts off.

I've definitely got my chamber elevated and all that, it's doing great since I re-hydrated the perlite.

How did your harvest end up tasting?  Keep us updated on all the experimenting too I'm always interested in new ideas.

It was so good I had them with kale and Mexican zucchini and Lemmon pepper all sautéed. The lady thought they were weird but she just needs baby steps into new frontiers sometimes. They were delicious for sure. I'll update this thread when I noc my aspen or birth my experimental 1/2 pints. They're so cute hehe

I decided to noc my 2 Yellow Oyster pints to aspen today. Here's what it looks like:

2 pints to 2.5 Liters of aspen soaked for 3+ days, covered.

Woot here's a pic of my very full inc chamber:

I lost my notepad so this is like my personal notepad for now. Updates will ensue.

Update:
That bag of yellow Oyster spawn in just aspen is colonizing extremely slowly. It's colonized <1% of the surface thus far and it's been just about 2 weeks. Why? Possibly it had to do with the fact that I forgot to rinse the aspen. Noob mistake #1. Possibly its because I didn't properlypasteurize the aspen . Noob mistake #2. Possibly I let the spawn get too old before I banged it up and did the transfer. Noob mistake #3 (all in no particular order). There are 6 holes covered w micropore tape so they can breathe. And moisture was fine. Definitely field capacity. any thoughts?

The plot continues:
I've begun a BIG project, at least the largest grow I've done. Here's a pic:

Closer to show sub:

And mycelium growing out of the top!:

So at least I'm doing something right with this one. But I have no idea how I'm going to fruit it. It's about 2'x2'x1'  could I just grow it as is in the bin? Or would that greatly diminish my yield due to lack of surface area? Any help or negative criticism is ALWAYS welcome. Thanks guys and thanks oeric for the rating! Btw this pic is on day 3, almost day 4
