Peyote seedlings sunburned and streching?
    #17892444 -

A FOAF has a few peyote which he has been growing from seed. I don't know if they should technically be called seedlings as they are nearly a year and a half old, however they are still quite small. They are receiving indirect light through a south facing window but appear to be stretching and at the same time they appear to be sunburned. They have been moved further from the window but this has only increased the stretching. Does anyone have advice of how find a good balance of light that will keep them from growing so tall and thin without becoming sunburned?

These two are a few months younger and seem to have a better shape.

Put them under fluorescent tubes. They should receive adequate light that way. Then just go for shaded light there after.

Some of mine are slightly elongated in bright shade while others are not. They are now growing again and are starting to thicken up. I think that its just the way some seedlings grow in the beginning. Too much light will make them slow down growth or stop it completely but they will soon become accustomed to the light and start growing again. Just don't let them burn up completely.

Shade cloth stretched over the top-cheap windo screen works well. Rotate them so they don't stretch too much in one direction. Just like house plants.

I also like to use a chicken grit mulch with cacti seedlings of all species. That way just the tops are in the light.

Thanks for the quick responses, much appreciated. A FOAF will try moving them back into the light with some shade cloth until he can get a florescent bulb.

Fluoros are the way to go.

Yeah fluoros are pretty cheap and foolproof. A timer is a worthwhile thing to get as well.
