Re: Is killing terrorists a solution? [Re: moonrockmushy]

Create an enemy, whip the people into a patriotic frenzy, state the need for 'security' as a way to get the masses under control.

Classic Fascism, an 'enemy' presented itself to Bush, he got the ball rolling, and Obama picked it up when he took over and is running full speed for the end zone.

Actually I think Bush was right to go after them.  But it isn't right to keep using it as an excuse for endless war and now they got the Cool Black Dude singing the same tune.  Like he's any different.

If you as a reporter don't want to get shot by a helicopter gunship don't hang out with people carrying RPGs.

I find it incredibly enlightening that this is all that the idiots supposedly managed to reveal, which is a righteous action.  Except, of course, for the names of the people who were helping us and who thus became targets for lunatics.  Well done, dikfors

Yep, giving midical aid to a dead or wounded terrorist makes you a terrorist, standing near a terrorist makes you a terrorist, holding or being near a gun in a town with any US military presence makes you a terrorist.  That is kind of my point.

giving medical aid?

I saw nothing of the sort, I saw someone stupid enough to drive up into a
firefight to collect weapons so they can try and claim these casualties
were civilians. this has been a common practice with islamic militias that
have fought the US

It doesn't make you a terrorist.  It makes you a target.  And an idiot.  Maybe you would like the US military to check everybody's ID to see if it says "Terrorist" or "Press"' before they whack them.  And Mirandize them as well, I'm sure, because..............rights.

No I would like the US military to not use bombs, helicopters, drones, and house to house raids where they have no clear mission or reason for their presence.  If they kill someone who isn't an enemy soldier I want them to justify their actions and be held accountable.  Not just because I am a bleeding heart, because it is bad strategy to wage a long distance war against an irregular fighting force ingrained into the population.  These sorts of wars can't be "won", they only end in death for the poor and profit for the rich.

you're working on bad assumptions, the 'raids' are based on intel gathered
from captured insurgents and even neighbors of other insurgents, when the
military performs these raids and breaks down a door they either find what
they're looking for or they dont, when they dont they compensate the home
owners, the average pay is $10k for a door that gets kicked in

there are no house to house searches and the mission has been clear from
the beginning, just because you dont know it doesnt mean that it's not

so the military should clear all deaths with you first? what leads you to
believe that the military isnt compensating people for wrongful death, we
compensate people for damage to homes, we're rebuilding the fucking country
even when we arent the ones doing the damage, we've upgraded their
electrical system, their roads, the water delivery and many other things
that benefit everyone in those regions and when we're done, we leave the
machinery that we used for doing the work because apparently after we've
bought it, shipped it there, used it a few years, it's now too costly to
ship it back to the US so it's given to the iraqi government. why do you
think the US government was hiring so many contractors? why do you think
the wars are as expensive as they are?

maybe you can tell us how you come to the conclusion that we arent compensating people and being held accountable for the few civilian
deaths that occur in these wars

again you're working on bad assumptions, you mention the irregular force
which is why some are claiming that there's so many civilian deaths,
there's no insurgent uniform and other folks running around grabbing up the
guns so now these insurgents look like civilians

I don't think it is possible.  For me the only way forward is diplomatic peace and an open and fair sharing of resources, cultural and physical.  You may have different plans but I think most will agree that labeling people "terrorists" by association, and creating an industry to seek out and kill these targets is terrifying in itself.  How easily could this term be expanded to include more and more groups until only those that will follow in lockstep will be spared?

So when the jihadis say things like there will only be peace untill every knee bows to Islam, you seem to think "naw, they really mean they just want to be treated fairly".

When a suicide bomber blows themselves up in a retirement home in Israel proper, that's really just a plea for better economics?

This is facile.  Death cults like Salafism are pretty clear in their aims, and "equal treatment" isn't what they're after.  They are imperialist asses in their own right- demanding huge chunks of the middle east be colonized and incorporated into a theocratic empire.

To speak of "equal treatment" and liberation from some supposed imperialistic design is to ignore the fact that these forces are not for equal treatment and are in fact in favor of imperial conquest.

Does killing terrorist work?  Is this a joke?  Dead terrorists have rarely caused problems.

This is silly.

There are legitimate arguments about the way politicians use loaded terms like 'terrorist' in such a way that they loose all meaning and approach equivalency with 'bad people', but the definition of the term as commonly used is pretty clear.  It does not include supporting terrorists, it doesn't include standing near a terrorist, it doesn't include holding a gun in a town with US military.

A terrorist is someone who uses fear of indiscriminant force against civilians to achieve political aims- generally the term implies a nonstate actor, but this isn't strictly neccessary.

Someone shooting US troops is not a terorrist- just a combatant or criminal (depending on the circumstances).  Someone planting bombs to blow up people going to the polls is a terrorist.  This isn't difficult.

KERRY-EDWARDS CLAIM:“ As vice president, Dick Cheney received $2 million from Halliburton.”
CNN FACT CHECK:The vice president received about $2 million in various benefits resulting from his former position as CEO of Halliburton Co., but he received the bulk of the compensation before he became vice president. Of the $2 million, $1.6 million came in January 200, after Cheney was elected but before he was sworn into office. The rest comes from a multiyear deferred salary package.

FactCheck: Yes, Halliburton got $7B in no-bid Iraq contracts
KERRY-EDWARDS CLAIM: “Halliburton got billions in no bid contracts in Iraq.”
CNN FACT CHECK:The Pentagon did award a no-bid, or sole-source, contract to a Halliburton subsidiary, Kellogg Brown &Root in March 2003. However, a Congressional report aid the contract was “properly” awarded and that KBR was the “only contractor that was determined to be in a position to provide the services within the required time frame.” The Kerry campaign estimates that the KBR oil reconstruction contract was worth proximately $7 billion, and the Defense Department estimates $8.2 billion. KBR also provides various logistical support in Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries under a competitively awarded contract granted in late 2001. In September 2004, the Pentagon announced it was considering breaking up part of the KBR logistical contract and accepting new bids in an effort to save money. Halliburton would be allowed to re-bid on the contract, but a company official said that it might not do so.

I don't think there really are ways to financially compensate alot of these people.  Looking at ending human lives in terms of money is a sad and scary mindset.
