Tempted to enlist!

The money is really tempting, and the fact the would pay for a small amount of my schooling. But I am incompatable with military lifestyle.
I never thought I would even consider such a thing, but here I am. Maybe I can get assigned to the same platoon as GG or something.

Your giving up something very valuable when you join the military, your own morality. It doesnt matter what you believe about killing and whats right and wrong. Your new moral authority is the U.S government and the messiah George Bush.

If you join the Military, they're gonna make you watch crazy horror movies, and women getting rapped and put drops in your eyes wich will be held open by jagged metel hooks. And you'll be tied into your chair so you can't move, and they'll give you nightly injections so that you forget the whole thing, and all this will be subliminaly implated into your mind, and one day you will find yourself back at the shroomery, but everytime you try to post or reply to a post, you'll get violently nauxious and proceed to vomit everytime, until you no longer have the desire to be a shroomerite... THEY WILL BREAK YOU... Your meals will consist of raw tofu and datura tea.... PLEASE DON'T ENLIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a couple things to say about this post...
Ok, I wouldnt join the militairy, my father was in the navy, and moving around every 3-4 years SUCKS ASS, trust me. Maybe you won't mind it, but what about you kids if you end up having any? and doing drugs is a BIG no-no when your in the military, the punishments are horribly increased (and yet, they can get drunk seems fair right?)
But whats with everyone bad mouthing the millitary? Sure, war sucks ASS, war is horrible, but the people fighting in them don't do so because "Hey! I want to kill people!" its because they want to defend their country.
Who do you thinks hates war the most? The activist who protest the war? The politician who starts the war? Or the soilder who fights in the war?
Think about it.
P.S. and yeah, if your ganna join, I'd wait till AFTER the war with Iraq is over...

Quote:
The money is really tempting, and the fact the would pay for a small amount of my schooling. But I am incompatable with military lifestyle. I never thought I would even consider such a thing, but here I am. Maybe I can get assigned to the same platoon as GG or something.
There are many positive sides of joining the military.
1. "Free" training in something you could have a career in for the rest of your life like: Satelite communications and other telecom fields Electronics Automotive (diesel) Aviation (mechanics or flight/ground crew) Administrative Engineering Intelligence
2. Travel. True, you don't get to choose where you go, but the odds are you'll see some pretty amazing places that you might never think to visit in your lifetime. I myself spent 3 years in Panama South America while in the Army... this wasn't on the top of my list of places to go in my life... but I learned a lot while I was there and I'm appreciative of it. In the Army you could end up in exotci places like: Honduras Alaska Panama Spain Japan Korea Belgium Norway Hawaii Iceland Turkey Germany
3. Benifits. The military medical/dental and legal benifits are exellent, period. You get 30 days paid vacation a year... you can't beat that anywhere in corporate America.
4. Physical Fitness. You'll probably never be in better shape your whole life than when in the military. Yes, they kick your ass, but if you stopped to think about it, you'd probably thank them for it.
5. Education. All branches of the military offer the G.I. Bill, plus extra college funds (in the Army we of course had The Army College Fund). Serve your time, and let them pay for your education when you get out. Also a lot of people don't know this, but the military will pay a huge percent of costs for school while your enlisted, so you can go to night school or take correspondance courses for little to nothing.
6. Pride. You can take pride in the fact that you've done something that not many Americans have the balls to do. You can take pride in the thought that you served your country. You can be proud to be part of a brotherhood that exists the rest of your life, weather you stay in the military or not. If you join the Marines there's a whole other level of pride that your entitiled to that I can't even begin to comprehend or describe.
Negatives:
1. Personal Freedom. It's true, your movement and activities are severely limited. You must follow their schedule, you have to report every single day. You can't "call in sick", you may go to the doctor, but unless your sent home under doctors orders you must still go to work. If you want to take vacation you have to request it up to 3 months in advance (depending on your command). Your required to submit to drug testing randomly (yeah, random... EVERYONE!). You are required to be vaccinated for LOADS of things... hell, sometimes... MOST of the time you don't even know what the vaccinations are for. In the last few years the military has killed many of it's own people by administering vaccines that were not tested, like Anthrax vaccines and vaccinations against chemical agents. You basically lose your freedom of choice, the most important freedom of all.
2. Does there really need to be a number 2? Well, yeah, I guess so... ya can't forget the whole WAR thing. I'm not a fan of the war, but when your enlisted you are required to give your life for "your country", even if it's over something as stupid as petrolium. I was enlisted during Desert Storm, but I will admit I was ready to go to jail if they had tried to send me to Kuwait. I'm not dying over oil, period. I believe in guarding the American Borders, but I don't believe in all these bullshit police actions like Viet Nam, Bosnia, Korea and the Middle East. Fuck That.
I think that's all I really need to say, don't you? It's a huge, and very serious decision to enlist in the military, don't take it lightly.

AIRFORCE, If you enlist in anything go AIRFORCE. Out of all the military branches the enlisted menbers of the Airforce get treated best, and have better opportunitites to take college courses not related to their job while serving. And besides I have seen more hot Air force chicks then I have Navy or Marine

Go for it! I'm a Gulf war veteran myself. It paid for my college education. I had a great time while I was in. There were good and bad times. I learned alot about myself. I would recommend it to those who are in good physical condition too. As far as the nay-sayers, I killed no one. I would have if I had too. Big fucking deal. Peace to the tree huggers. Only 13B infantry will have the opportunity to kill anyone. I was a radio operator. I may have killed a few worms hammering a ground rod into the soil.

pros GI Bill (college fund), travel, discipline , stay in shape, techinical education, medical coverage, benifits
cons isolation, lack of freedom, haircuts, drug tests, laziness, red tape/bullshit, being a mechanical puppet
your choice but definetly talk to alot of people who have been in the military or currently in the military, listen to their reasons on why they joined..
is the military right for you?

the people fighting in them don't do so because "Hey! I want to kill people!" its because they want to defend their country.
I can't see that killing people for a political motive is defensible. I couldn't even contemplate joining the military. My sanity is also important to me. Fuck a life of post traumatic stress disorder IF you survived. Reliving events, lability, hyperarousal, anger, depression, insomnia, nightmares.........fun.

Their are SOOOoooo many good Pros, I have only one Con.. You dont get to chose what you want for work. No matter what you go in as and want to be trained in, your job may have nothing to do with it at all.. Wana learn satellites and communications? Good but your gona be a cashier at the BX, report their then go to class. Wana be a Mechanic? Thats great but your job is passing out equipment at the rec hall and picking up towels in the locker room... The majority of people who sign up for a short time get stuck with some lame civilian type job which they have to do 40 + hours a week on top of all their training in whatever it is that they chose. Still the benefits outweigh everything...

Bullshit Gabba, Don't know where you heard that. I served with thousands, not hundreds, of people who ALL worked in the field they were trained in. As far as I go, I trained as a radio operator but now I'm a network engineer as a civilian. I trained on 30 year old equipment but operated the latest tactical satellite equipment. You don't know what you're talking about. Let some of the people who are going nowhere, go somewhere. We're not all rich people who can afford college or who want to pay back college grantsfor the REST of their lives as opposed to serving 2-4 years maybe doing something that they enjoy. Time goes pretty quick in the military. I regret ever getting out, especially with the state of the economy being what it is.

There are no "pros" to the military. Although there is a very real benifit to you, think about what you are contributing to..... :"Defense of your country?" join once the arabs attack the USA, otherwise call it what you will, justify as you will, just dont think too deeply ......and you will finish your service, get your free schooling, and work your high paying job, until you have a new car, family, and false sense of ego materialstic happiness.
It saddens me how we can be so blind.....

I enlisted straight out of high school. It was what I wanted to do all my life, I went in 11b (infantry) and figured i would re-up and get some college when i figured out what i wanted to do with my life.
diabetes changed that and i got out after 2 years on a medical discharge.
Basically the questions you need to ask yourself are -
are you willing to give up your constitutional rights to protect them for all other americans?
are you willing to kill/die for someone else's policy?
If you can say yes to both with no reservation, go for it... if you are arguing about haircuts and college benefits, please stay out, you may get someone killed.

This is a voluntary thing to submit yourself to the armed forces. It is not a huge mistake, nor are the people who join the armed forces stupid people. It is a great accomplishment to show such selflesness for your country.
Personally, if I have difficulty getting in to University (due to this damn double cohort year) I'll probably take the SEAL challenge. Why? Because for once, I want to do something important, rather than sit around getting high all the time, making conspiracy theories about the government, police, etc, are all out to get me.
PS. Yes, I'm an american citizen, despite living in Canada.

You seriously think that joining the military is something important?!
What are the wars and conflicts of humanity in the grand scheme of things? in the end nothing you do will change anything, if only people would think peace as important and move towards a higher goal.

In the grand scheme of things, nothing is particularly important. What, then, are you doing that is so important? How then, can you criticize how important what someone else is doing?
As for peace.. it's a dream. It'd be nice, but it's not going to happen. As long as there are assholes, cruel dictators, etc, there is going to be a counter-force. If armed terrorists kept an entire building of hostages, shot one every half hour, would you rather sit around getting stoned, let a white dove loose, bitch about freedom and peace, etc, or see those hostages let loose, and the terrorists neutralized by violent means?
If a dictator got his hands on nerve gas, and launched it at israel, causing it to be completely uninhabitable for half a century, would you rather sit around calling him a "bad man/ oppressor", or move in and give him what he justly deserves, then dismantlein all trace of his military?
Violence is bad, but sometimes it just needs to be used to protect those who don't want to be involved with it. I would gladly give my life, if I knew that it was protecting one person, even if that person happened to be very unnappreciative for it.
As for the whole shrub/saddam thing, I do agree it's stupid. Why? Because shrub is all "rah rah, sis boom bah" when he could have send in spec ops already to arrest saddam, and to interrogate him.

Also, I think it's a fair assumption that everyone here has grown up in a relatively free and peaceful society (Especially BC and Ontario, heh). If you had grown up in France as it was being destroyed by the Germans, would you still feel the same way? If you grew up in Afghanastan, would you... I don't need to bother with that one, the majority of people on this board, including myself, would have been publicly executed with a rusty knife there by now.
Here's a good one: If you were backed in to a corner by a thug attempting to kill/harm/rape you, and you knew self defense, would you simply do your best toller cranston impression and go "tee hee, oh you, stop being siiilly", or would you defend yourself violently, in order to incapacitate your attacker? Don't lie to yourself.

If you decide to go in, make sure you select what you want to do and GET IT IN WRITING! I knew several guys who enlisted and thought they had a guarantee to specialize in some specific thing who discovered that they had no guarantee at all.
One guy thought he was going to be a photographer. He became a cook.
Early on the lieutenant asked the company (in boot camp) if anybody had gotten a guarantee to be a medic (this was the Marines). About six guys raised their hands. The lieutenant had everybody give their recruiters a big hand. There is no such thing as a Marine medic and there never has been.
When it comes time to sign the contract, unless it actually says, in black and white, that you are going to be a such-and-such, you have no guarantee at all. If you go in without a guarantee (in writing) then you will be whatever they want you to be. The things they need the most of are the things you probably don't want to be - basic infantry, cooks, admin clerks, you get the idea.
Get it in writing. Nothing else counts, no matter what they say.

You raise good point, and despite my anti-war post i DO understand the need for war. But claiming certain parts of the world evil, blatently lying, establishing unfair advantages, threating to annihilate a country with no evidence, those are the acts of a country that has become power hungry and corrupt. It reminds me of the nazis, rome, and other powers that got out of control.
You dont have to believe it, but this is not a war on terrorism, or to prevent WMD from being deployed by "potential threats", or any other of the noble reasons the US lies. Its about establishing thier power, oil reserves, economy (euro getting up there), and thier false sense of good and evil, which convieniently applies to whomever does not share its views.
These are my opinions....not facts!! i only hope one day we can all share a similar view.

How do you know the US is lying? Because shrub is an asshole? That's hardly enough evidence to say that the entire government is lying. If Iraq really is found to be holding any weapons of mass destruction, I really hope he fucks up their government. They have admitted to having CIA field agents in Iraq, as well as commandos. If they attack Iraq, in any way, it'll be to either grab Saddam and interogate/arrest him, or to head straight to those weapons and forcibly remove them.
It may be that they know already exactly where the weapons are. Should he tell the public? Fuck no, then the element of surprise would be gone.
We've gone way off topic though. This is not just about the war on iraq. The original post was: "should I enlist?", not: "Is this war really neccessary?"

I dont see the big problem with oil, If we didnt have the oil to help rebuild them (via us corps getting money) than that money would come from your tax dollars. This war is imminent, and just like every other country we've ahnilated so is the rebuilding. If the rest of the world wants to sit on their ass while saddam builds WMD and employs more coercive tactics to hide them, thats their choice. They want to ignore the facts, they sit around humming a nice tune disregarding the obvious. The US unfortunatly doesnt sit on its ass when the shit hits the fan. Or even wait for the shit to hit the fan. We act, and it works. I really dont know what you peacenicks want for Iraq. I guess we should give them another 12 years.

A friend of mine joined the Navy as a nuclear chemist. They're paying 100% for his education, plus a huge signing bonus. And he'll never have to hold a gun (after boot camp).

Perhaps assisting in the NUCLEAR POWERED subs or ships. Or, perhaps assisting with protection against nuclear strike. Don't be a tool; when you make an assumption you make an ass out of "u" and mption.

i have that same feeling! sometimes i just want to enlist, and i'm not even sure why. but then i realize that enlisting would be going against all of my beliefs, and i am sure that i've been brainwashed into wanting to enlist somehow.
don't join the military.
if we didn't have militaries, we wouldn't have wars.
come on, people. it's that easy!

"if we didn't have militaries, we wouldn't have wars."
Yes, fine, if by 'we', you mean the entire world. You know, it'd be nice if suddenly, we could figure out a way to breathe underwater, as well. It would be silly, however, if you were at 200 feet below water, and decided that that SCUBA gear just isn't neccessary. I mean, come on, that oppressive water, trying to keep us down, damn it! It's mother nature's conspiracy, the bitch!
Well, you'd better bend over, because reality is about to kick your ass.

Starting pay for a private is roughly 1200-1300 per month. Not bad if u live alone but if u have a fam. that could be hard.
If u r lucky to get on base housing (u will need to drop to your knees and praise jesus christ) There usually a huge waiting list. U do however get a government rent check that is for rent/electric It's between 800-1000 a month Most houses near a base are way over priced and u will end up spending more than they give you.
Some bases do have a day care though that is provided free. That way you wife or G/F can also work. I have a friend in the service now he's been there 2 years and is having a real hard time keeping caught up. He is making payments on his parents house here (they passed away) Paying over 1600.00 a month just n rent/electric (2 bedroom apt pretty shity at that) Getting a car is a joke down there. They have those buy here pay here places that rip everyone with little or no credit off.
the only + he says is there going to pay for his school. But he found out he could have gotten a grant to do that.
He's having a real shitty time and getting yelled at on top of it. Just make sure ur ready for it if you deside to go. I'd hate to see some 1 else in the same boat. The armed services should look into doing something about raising pay rates. Oh yeah if u get shipped off and have 2 fight u get a whole extra 300.00 a month.WOW

As much as I may seem to try and talk people into joing the military, if you have any doubts, don't do it. Signing up is a very serious committment, and failure to abide by the strict military code of justice can land you out on your ass, many of your rights taken away for good. Plus you might die
