Is killing terrorists a solution?
    #17803818 -

A spokesperson for the OIC (Organization for Islamic Cooperation) interviewed on The Daily Show tonight said that the mindset which seeks to kill "terrorists" in order to prevent "terrorism" is a problem.

This rang true to me.  In the first place I don't understand what a terrorist is.  Are they just the ones who strap on suicide vests and blow themselves up?  Those that support them?  If they were inspired through a religious, social, or religious group, are all the members of that group also terrorists?

The events of 9/11 seem to be "an act of terror" is anything is.  I don't want to argue about that so lets say that is was actually Al-Queda and OBL who comitted the acts.  I can see this as a reasonable foundation to seek out the people who are involved in this, but in doing so you realize that it is a loose organization with international ties to many aspects of life in that part of the world.  This is not a traditional army, it is more of a citizen militia.

I think there is a real lack of understanding the factors that lead to what is called "terrorism".  I think it is true when they say when you kill one terrorist, 10 more will spring up to take his place.  The only way to really win the war on terrorism in the Middle East would be to completely destroy and wreak havoc on all aspects of their culture, gain control of their media, and lie to them so that they hopefully forget the atrocities they just suffered.

I don't think it is possible.  For me the only way forward is diplomatic peace and an open and fair sharing of resources, cultural and physical.  You may have different plans but I think most will agree that labeling people "terrorists" by association, and creating an industry to seek out and kill these targets is terrifying in itself.  How easily could this term be expanded to include more and more groups until only those that will follow in lockstep will be spared?
Can we stop terrorism by killing terrorists?
You may choose only one

I don't believe the US ever has been or ever will be under a serious terrorist threat but you can all keep watching your fox.

Fuckin psy-ops and government propaganda. The Taliban doesn't even exist, 9/11 had nothing to do with Afghanistan/Iraq, and I don't give a fuck about "US interests abroad being targets". There shouldn't be US interests abroad in the first place.

Colonialism, welcome to the 18th century.

he was referring to Al-Qaeda, and mistook them for Taliban; i'm pretty sure.

no need to be upset. (sorry if that sounds condescending but he just made a mistake, i think.)

edit- thanks akira

Also,

It's not some massive organization across the planet trying to take down the United States of Israel with sleeper cells for 30 years from now when we think we're safe.

There is more warfare and the stripping of civil liberties being done to Americans now more than ever, in a downturn that'll surely spiral into depression.

In an age when colonialism doesn't work anymore, I don't put anything past the US government to find a way to turn military corporate (death squads anyone?) and completely breach the civilian/military by forcing people into poverty.

fuck, that sounds familiar, anyone know anybody who's enlisted for the money?

But the Taliban are some country yahoos that swooped in and took control when America backed them in their attempt to oust Soviet influences.  They are not representative of majority and only have notieriety because they are backed by foriegn influences seeking political ends in the region.  That is what we give the people of Afghanistan by and large.  It seems crazy to think the US is hated because of anti-freedom social/religious ideals.

for money? hell yes, thats what war is. young folks dying for a better life or sense of glory... at one point the idea of it was just, get paid to nullify oppresive, and big headed threats to the afghanis... Im not saying I agree with the sentiment but I get it.

I love war vets for what they've done and come from a large family of US soldiers and almost enlisted myself. I just can't imagine having been a paid mass murderer on someone else's agenda.

I understand that weapons of war, colonizing other nations and stripmining them them for resources is the only way to make bank, but at this point why not just try to rule the whole world?

Schoolyard bullying syndrome, shit.

:nomoreinternet: yeah, the Taliban just piss me off. they are corrupt beyond believe, and are basically living off the dogma of their interpretation of religion.

 and they should be a focus.

for real. for a while the Taliban was a kind of peoples force. bringing promise and progress to a pretty much displaced people.

Iran was the same. Im not gonna blame western infulence, but it really was kind of like a greedy drive on the "civilised and democratic" west's influence in a political vacuum.

Im not gonna use Germany as an example because thats cliche and asking to be godwin'd, but look at japan. You have thousands of years of tribal order (or disorder depending) modernized in a very, VERY small time.

Im not saying the west is bad. Im just saying, it happens.
