no more umbrellas, just air domes!
    #17788536 -

has anybody seen this? It is based on some Dyson technology.  I'm kind of skeptical but it seems fucking dope.

I don't know. Sounds like a good idea, but it seems it would only work in light rain. A heavy rain seems like it would require a tremendous amount of airflow and could you imagine a bunch of people using those on the street? Point just slightly wrong and you could end up knocking someone over or at least blowing a bunch of water into them. Besides, knowing Dyson it will probably be a $500 umbrella and I just do not think people are ready to spend that kind of money on an umbrella yet. Plus, how long to the batteries last? I think I would rather have something that protects me from rain that is not dependant on how charged the batteries are. Nothing more than a rich man's toy.

Hell, that would be quite awesome. I'm just wondering, like the guy above me, what happens in really heavy rain.

Absolutely incredibly awesome idea. If you look at those Dyson airknife hand dryer contraptions, it's easy to see that this might actually work. Of course, the battery issue mentioned by Shroomacabra seems like the primary issue that needs to be sorted out next. Fortunately, there are zillions of applications that could do with more efficient battery technology, so several research groups and companies are working hard to improve existing technology.

I wouldn't be surprised if we saw this in the streets of major cities on a regular basis a couple of years down the line.

What's the battery charge life on those?
Will it shut off after 5 minutes of use?

I wonder if it will come in plus sizes, for the average American consumer.

Sweet idea man. Once they iron out the battery life issues and the fact it will only work in light rain.

Might also be an issue with noise. I like the sound of rain on my umbrella. That would be replaced with a hand dryer sound
