Geodesic Domes

Has anybody ever built one?

I am planning on building a 20 foot diameter 3 Frequency Dome for Shambhala and Burning Man 2010. I'm gonna use 3/4 inch EMT Conduit.

The only thing I can't decide on is how to make the dome cover and what materials to use to ensure shade in the desert, minimal flapping in the wind, and at least partial rain resistance. Any suggestions?

Do you have plans already drawn up for this?  I'd love to see a draft of it using the EMT..

I suppose tarps would be out of the question, although high quality ones applied in proper order (from bottom to top) would possibly stand up to temporary conditions like those on the playa.

put black plastic on one side, clear plastic on the other, cut some flaps
in the side for air flow... the down side... people will call you a planet
killer and you may bake in your little convection oven


aluminet shade cloth, it'll reflect the sun, allow for great air flow and
rain shouldnt be much of a problem but you can always carry some plastic
to cover it if it rains

I don't have plans drawn up exactly but I have spent the last week or so reading and watching everything I could online about how to build them.

www.desertdomes.com has a calculator to figure the lengths of the EMT struts for whatever size dome you want to build. It also has some useful info on how to flatten the ends of the struts and drill holes in them. As long as your careful I think the whole procedure is pretty simple.

Yea that Aluminet shade cloth seems basically perfect actually. Would have to do alot of sewing and grommet making to make a perfect fit but I guess that is inevitable. Thanks for info!

it's $14 for 50 of the gromits designed to hold the material, it's made to
withstand  winds, inquire about having them seam the ends, it usually is
much less hassle, usually the two opposing ones do, a few companies sell
smaller widths so if you dont need 14' wide you can search out a few
