Cell phones and kids. technology= Bad???? but i love my sexbox

Nobody I know cares what I'm thinking about this late so Its to the pub I go.


Do you feel there should be an age limit for cell phones? pros? cons?
How about myspac/facebook?

I go nuts when I see kids with cellphones, I mean who the fuck does a 1st or 2nd grader need to call.
When cell phones started becoming an everyday item parents got them for their kids for emergencies. Nowadays everyone has one, and they cant live without it. Unlimited txt godamn it

Myspace and facebook are easily accessible by cellphones so the kids don't even have to be at home to waste their time.

I really hate how technology is taking over, what happened to kids hanging out at the mall, whatever kids used to do?

Technology is a double edged sword.

There are pros and cons, I see nothing wrong with kids having cell phones, especially due to our technologically advanced society, that continues to grow exponentially, if you think it's crazy now.

Just give it 10 years, it will be like a sci-fi movie.

I don't have a problem with technology, I have a problem with man.

My kids can get a cell phone when they can sign the contract and pay for it.  I sure as hell wont buy them one, I dont even have one. :tongue:

I care. To me it represents the shit direction of our society.

Drewwyann summed up my belief. Technology is leading people to become dependent on being inter-connected at all times, and not in the hippie psychedelic way. That dependence is a poor substitute for healthy human/world interaction and emotional stimulus and development.

Although i admit, after having a cellphone for years ... has made not currently having one difficult at times. People cannot believe i don't have one. It is impossible to find a payphone these days and the ONE in my downtown now costs .50 cents for a local call!

Children should not have cellphones, My young neice was in bitter dispute with her parents about texting DURING christmas dinner last year....

I don't think kids should have cell phones either, but I can't tell people how to raise their kids either.

And who cares if a kid is texting during christmas dinner. Really. I understand some people have uptight codes of conduct or whateverthefuck, but who is it hurting?

Technology is amazing and evil at the same time. The wrong technology abused, it can cause enormous amounts of destruction on every level.
But on the flip side, technology can be used to bring people together, heal the planet, and do amazing things.
It comes down to the way it is used, and the intentions behind it pretty much.

But I am a promoter of the internet - which in my opinion is the greatest tool of our generation.
It can be a tool to unite people across the globe - instantly. Share ideas, transfer files, pictures, music, instantly.
You can get information out there instantly, you can create super diverse thriving communities such as this one.
On the flip side the internet can be abused, people become chronically addicted to child/horse porn, MMOs, or whateverthefuck and waste their mind/life away.
It's all in the intention of the person using the technology. What do you want to use it for?

I agree too much technology can cause people to become "detached" or whatever. But again, where is that coming from?
My opinion is MOST of it comes from subconscious mental programming via TELEVISION. A one-way bombardment of information.
At least computers, cell phones etc are interactive.

So I'd probably side with the young neice. Sounds like something my parents would have done, getting butthurt about texting during a dinner.
Even though I hate texting, it's the principle. Stupid rules are stupid rules.


So yeah technology could be the downfall of our society, but it could also save it.

I have a LOT of thoughts on this subject, but I'm not in a state right now to coherently project my thoughts.

By your line of reasoning one could argue that we should just scrap all phones, internet, and TV, just because it dehumanizes us and acts as a substitute for direct interaction. I see nothing wrong with giving people the ability to instantly connect with one another; if anything it helps society progress.

That's exactly the right solution, state sponsored age limits. The gov already does enough parenting with censorship the way it is and going down that road we're going to see them monitoring and regulating everything children do.

Call me old fashioned, but it pisses me off when someone is texting something pointless instead of spending time with their family +/or me.

I think shroomism made alot of good points.

Oh well, i have nothing to add beyond that. Id be happiest if we just forever lived in the years 1999-2001.

Without a doubt we are over-technologized. IMO.

i think its a bit ridiculous when i see little kids with cell phones, but thats up to the parents. having the government step in with age limits is freaking ridiculous. why do people feel the need to have the government act as a second pair of parents?

That is old fashioned yes, and that's kind of selfish type of thinking.
I understand family values and whatnot. But that's like saying spend time with ME ignore your friends, I want your time. I want to control what you do.
It's like the other day when I was talking to one of my really good old friends on AIM, whom I hadn't spoken to in over 4 years. We are catching up on all kinds of shit, sharing the intimate details of our sordid lives.
And my roommate comes in the room and immediately wants me to drop everything I'm doing and help him with something as if it's the most important thing in the world.
And he says who gives a shit about who your talking to, and starts mocking me typing because I just ignored him and kept typing, as we were having a deep discussion at the time.
I found that extremely selfish and rude.. I basically said something along the lines of "Fuck you Asshole".
And it wasn't because he asked me to do something. It was because of the way he did it. Trying to control me, as if what he wanted to do was more important than what I was doing, which he had no idea of. Even when I told him I was talking to an old friend he didn't care. 

Now I understand christmas dinners are a time for family bullshit, but really. Nothing wrong with talking to friends.
To some people, friends are more important than family. Friends ARE family.(ME) Or maybe I'm just jaded.
Whether she was texting something pointless to some stupid 8 year old or talking about her next deal with Sony, is beside the point.
But this is just a dumb anecdotal situation, but it's a decent illustration I guess.

We aren't going to live forever in 1999-2001. Technological advances are increasing at an exponential rate.
New technologies is a wondrous thing. Yes, we have been very irresponsible with some of our technologies, that has lead to the degradation of our planet and it's natural resources, but we are only in the beginning stages of being a technological civilization.
We can build mobile devices that collect solar energy and produce clean water in the same device, that can be used in 3rd world countries to provide electricity and clean water to people. We could produce technologies that clean the oceans and rivers. We can produce technologies to help, HEAL and unite the planet instead of the destructive technologies that have proliferated the 20th century.

Civilization cannot last forever. Not this model of civilization we have. It is only a matter of time before it collapses.
The difference between a collapse of civilization now, and 5,000 years ago, is that we will access to certain technologies, so we don't have to start back over from the stone age.
That's a good thing.

There is different types of technologies. There are purely destructive technologies (nuclear bombs.. ), there are technologies that make our life easier but harm the environment (internal combustion engine.. ), and there are purely beneficial "organic" technologies - technologies that enhance our lives, and also work in harmony with the earth and help enhance the environment, a win-win situation. This is a fairly new concept. But it will become the standard, mark my words. No technology can last forever that does not fit this latter model. It is simply not sustainable. However, computers are here to stay. There methods may change, and they will get more advanced as time goes on, but they are here.

We have to re-define what we consider technology. Technology should serve the needs of man, without destroying or causing harm to others or its environment.
This is entirely possible. It just requires a different approach than what we have taken in the past. A little more critical thinking.

The internet was the beginning of this. It connects people in a way that was completely impossible before, except by group telepathy.
As human evolution continues, so will technology, and so will the beneficial technologies, as we start creating more and more of them out of a NEED.
A NEED to become more sustainable. It IS possible to live in harmony with the planet, with technology. And this is the future.
But it is likely to get a lot worse before it gets better. The old harmful technologies, need to go, and be replaced by newer, cleaner ones.
Technologies that HELP people and HELP the planet, instead of destroying it.

Now where does kids using cell phones fit into all of this? That's just the way it is. 40 years from now kids will be piloting spaceships or something and people will be like WTF .
40 years ago no one would envision that virtually every kid today would grow up with a computer. That's just the way it is.
But are we so much worse off because of it? I say no. In general, people are much more informed these days because of it.
Sure, it can be used for mindless bullshit. But that's someones choice to use it that way.

Technology is a TOOL. Tools can be used, and they can be abused. A BOW AND ARROW IS TECHNOLOGY.
With technology, we could destroy the human race.
With technology, we could solve all the biggest problems facing our race, bring world peace, and explore space together.
The past model was: Technology to CONTROL and DOMINATE your environment. This stupid "Man Vs Nature" mentality. Well if it's a fight, nature is gonna win, everytime.
The new model will be: Technology to LIVE in harmony. "Man WITH Nature"

I think what we will eventually see, is a return to a more natural state of living, WITH technology.
Our technology will adapt to our needs and our needs are to become more sustainable with the planet.
Bring on the technological advancements, in harmony with nature.

And that's my 2 cents.
Of course I could be completely wrong.

I agree with you in this situation. It is about holding the connection with the person you are currently interacting with.

Good post though! I agree mostly and feel the same, i just really hate cellphone/camera/mp3 player/videogame console machines.

Some kid listens to shitty rap on his cellphone mini speaker in the breakroom at work... *sigh*

Now after I said all that, I have to agree mostly on the cell phone thing. I find it kind of stupid.
I only got a cell phone out of necessity. I had one years ago and got rid of it because I didn't need it.
But then when I moved to LA I pretty much HAD to have one to function in society. People thought I was insane for not having one.
And it DID make my life much more difficult, by not having one. Just like not having a car. You can still function, but it's a lot more difficult.

And I'm sure there's plenty of people that just use their cellphone to post "I just took a giant shit" on twitter, and other meaningless crap. Which is dumb.
But really, who does it hurt. Does it really make us more detached from real life interactions? Maybe some people, who choose to ignore their friends and text away bullshit.
But it's also an amazing tool for networking and communication. You know, the reason they exist.
The fact that almost all phones not are basically mini computers with mp3/cameras/phone/games etc just means that we are making technologies more efficient and multi-purpose tools. Just because 500,000 people use their camera phones to take dumb myspace pictures doesn't mean they are useless. That can be infinitely handy in certain situations.
It IS a double-edged sword, but we will learn from our mistakes, and new things will emerge that solve the problems of old.
