Deleting a file sercurely

You know how you delete a file it really doesn't delete it and if you run a data recovery program it can probably be recovered. I've used this program called SecureClean that encrypts it over and over and then it deletes it, but I've found it a little buggy. I just formatted my computer and want to install a new program that does the same thing. Does anyone know of a good program that isn't buggy or a resource hog.

just format 0'ing out the hdd (not a quick format, can take 16hours on 120gigs!)

also, if its deleted, the filesystem will eventually replace it with new data (which is how fragmentation happens and such)

From a security standpoint, this is a very bad assumption. Here is why:

A typical hard drive is composed of sectors. Each sector is usually 512 bytes in length. If your file is not an even multiple of the sector size, then there will be some free space between the end of your file and the start of the next file. This free space is often called slack.

When I delete a file, the OS usually only marks the file as deleted. All of the information is still on the disk, it just isn't being pointed to. Using various tools, a good analyst can recreate the deleted file.

If another file is written to the disk, the OS may elect to overwrite a section of the disk that has a deleted file on it. If the new file is shorter than the original file, the tail end of the original file is still stored on the drive in the slack space. Again, a good analyst can grab the last bit of the file you have both deleted and overwritten.

It gets even worse if you had a large file that you deleted that spanned multiple sectors and you replace that file with lots of small files. In this case, almost the entire original file can be reclaimed because each small file only overwrites a small portion of the original file.

Also, writing out with zeros, or formatting still isn't good enough to stop a determined person from getting your data. With the proper tools, the last several writes to any location on the disk can be read. (Kind of like how you can read the impression on a pad of paper from the previous page that was written.) This is why programs that do secure deletes overwrite the file with various patterns of 1's and 0's multiple times.

but unless the FBI is going to bust down his door, and waste money (using hex editors or whatnot) to pull up data (or whatever they would use for reading overwritten crap?)...he wouldnt have to worry.

im not sure if they would waste the money/time/resources on his computer anyway, i mean..they need tp spend that money on hunting osama and putting those damn pot heads in prison right?

norton system works comes with a file/folder "shredder"..

it has two levels of wipe:
standard and DOD (dept. of defence).

i'd like to get rid of all that evidence too, but i don't even understand how to do it. i guess i need to do some research when i get the time.

Formatting a hard drive doesn't always do it, I've seen court cases where they recovered a formatted HD with "hard drive shadowing/imaging" technology. Got all the incriminating files back and charged the fucker for some murder somehow, I don't remember the whole story. But they wouldn't go to the lengths of imaging/shadowing your HD for warez or anything, probably only under heavy heavy circumstances, such as a murder.

Panther 10.3 (Mac OS) has an intergrated "secure delete" preference. The space is overwritten with seven passes of random data.
