HDD formatting to remove virus?
    #2177285 - 12/14/03 06:05 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

I have a hard drive that has one of those impossible to find homepage hijackers.

I do not care about any of the data on the drive, I just wan't to renew it.

Will running a system format/restore be enough to kill any viruses on it? Or would it maybe need a low level formatting to be sure?

Also, I also thought of just installing it as a slave on a functional system and just deleting everything I see on it (not into the other drive's recyle bin, just a straight delete).

Again, would that be enough to be sure that I got rid of the virus?

Please help me to get every last thing off that HDD. Thanks!

Hijackers are not MBR viruses and a regular format should do it.

You should try updating your spyware software.  That should help.  And MBR's aren't viruses....  although if you don't care about any of the data on the hard drive, and if you got some time to kill, go ahead and format it

An MBR is a master boot record, which is the very first sector of the hard drive. (Floppy disks do not have an MBR.) The MBR contains about 240 bytes of code and the disk's primary partition table (4 entries). When you boot from a hard drive, BIOS loads the drives MBR to memory location 0000:07C0 and passes control of execution to the MBR code. The MBR generally relocates itself to another part of memory, finds an active partition from the primary partition table, loads the boot sector of the active partition to 0000:07C0, and passes control to the boot sector code (all in 240 bytes!)

When somebody talks about an MBR virus, they mean a virus which infects/replaces the MBR. The virus executes as soon as the computer tries to boot, before any virus scanner software has a chance to load. These were common in the days of DOS before protected memory, etc... pretty uncommon these days.

Thank you all. A couple new questions come to mind:

I recently deleted another hard drive by installing it as a slave drive and deleting everything I saw on it. After I was done there was a little more than 2 MB I couldn't delete, nor see. I assume that would include the MBR, but the MBR you said is 240 bytes. What is the rest of that 2 MB?(yes, I had show hidden files on too.)

Also, how can I re-write the MBR? Is there a prog that will do it for you? If so, where would I get that prog at?

Thanks again everyone for your help, if it wasn't for people like you, noobs like me would be smashing computers everywhere.

The code part of the MBR is around 240 bytes. Don't forget that it also holds the primary partition table... The MBR is always 512 bytes long on an Intel machine.

> how can I re-write the MBR?

Under DOS through Win2k, run the command "fdisk /mbr" Under WinXP you have to boot into the recovery console and run "fixmbr" or smomething like that.

> I was done there was a little more than 2 MB I couldn't delete, nor see.

I would fdisk the drive in question, removing all partitions. Then repartition the disk (fdisk again) followed by a format.
