Agar Tek

I have read many guides for the Agar technique, but I am still confused about how it works. From what I gather, you place agar into the petri dish and add the small piece of mushroom tissue. It has all been sterilized. You cap the petri dish and wait for it to grow. Is this basically the way the Agar Tek works? Because from what I've read this is the basic idea. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

It depends on what your aim is: you can clone tissue on agar, or you can grow spores and select the healthiest section of mycelium: the basic aim is to grow clones of the largest mushrooms in any given flush: the tek you use obviusly depends on if you have spores or fresh mushrooms... but you've got the basic idea.

Is there anything else I should do? Like after the tissue is introduced to the agar, should I just leave it and wait for the mycellium to grow and pins to form? Or do I need to do something else or add something at the beginning or end of the procedure?

You watch and wait . Then when you get a good "clean" isolate you inoc grain with segments of the agar . Do all the reading you can on the topic before trying , get a copy of THE MUSHROOM CULTIVATOR if possible , it will explain in detail what methods , and what your goal . Agar cultures are very rewarding IMO . Far to much to properly explain here you need the basics under your belt to understand the process ........ so READ READ READS Good Luck

Is it possible to just let the mycelium pin and fruit in the petri dish? Because I don't have the space to transfer it into jars or big subsrates.

Is highly possible , but not cost effecient . Little tiny guys not worth harvesting usually grow on agar . This is too shallow of a medium to "grow" on ,also difficult to get biggies in a tiny covered dish . The momenet you expose agar to open , it will dry out quickly , and breed just about whatever lands on it . . It would be fun to grow on ten gallons of agar , but costly . Half pint jars do not take up much space ........ but it always starts out just a few and ends up many jars ........... LOL !

Well, what would be the best medium to transfer the mycelium on for average results? I'm not looking for the biggest grow here, just something that I can clone some mushrooms for a few more. I cannot order spores off the internet or afford anything really big. So I need to use street mushrooms and rehydrate them for the tissue. Kind of like a poor mans mini grow

Rye berries, WBS, straight millet, popcorn... take your pick.
My friend is partial to WBS (wild bird seed).

So just put the mycelium onto a container with WBS on it?
