Pull around 16 inches of regular foil and put it on your table. Take a stack of 8 clean glass petris and lay it on one end of the foil. Begin rolling the stack up and tucking the ends of the foil as you go to keep the stack tight. Wrap the stack up all the way and neatly press the foil down so it can stand up like a cylinder.
▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀Step 2:

Place the stacks directly on your upper oven rack and turn it to bake at 350F. Let the plates "cook" for an hour and turn the oven off. Allow the plates to cool in the oven for a few hours before you get ready to mix your agar recipe
▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀Step 3:

Now we can mix our agar recipe. Figure out how much agar you need, for these 90mm petris I will use about 25ml per plate and will be doing 24 plates, so I need 600ml of agar. Standard MEA is my preferred recipe which at this ratio would be 600ml water/12g Agar/12g Light Malt Extract. Add the water to your pan and then dump in the dry ingredients. Turn the heat to high and stir constantly while you bring to a simmer and carefully remove from the heat while you grab your stick blender. Put it back on the burner and hit it with the stick blender for 30 seconds to really dissolve everything.
▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀Step 4:
Get your glass media bottles ready. In my case I am using motherfuckin Boone's Farm bottles. Someone's getting laid tonight. Split your agar among the bottles so that they don't boil over. At this time add any coloring or antibiotic additives. I added a tsp of activated charcoal to each here. Cover the media bottles with foil tightly. No lid, just foil.
▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀Step 5:
Put your media bottles in your pressure cooker and PC for 30 minutes at 15psi. Move PC to your flowhood to cool
▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀Step 6:
Allow the cooker to cool off for 1 hour. Then remove your media bottles and place them on a rack in your flowhood air stream. Go and fetch your foil stacks of plates and put the stacks in a ziplock to transport to your flowhood area if necessary.
▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀Step 7:
Depending on how much media is in the bottles and your ambient temps, allow the agar bottles to cool off in the air stream a little longer so that they are still warm but not too hot. Maybe 5-10 minutes and they should be good.
▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀Step 8:
When the temp has dropped enough and you are ready to pour, grab a foil pack of plates and carefully unwrap it and place the stack on your rack. Only work with 1 stack at a time. 8 plates, 2 stacks of 4. You can lift 4 plates with 1 hand easily to pour. So place them 4 and 4 next to each other on your rack with enough room between the two stacks the your hand will not interfere with the stack next to it and air wont blow off of you into it.
▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀Step 9:
Remove the foil lid on your media bottle, carefully and cleanly ripping it off. Starting at the bottom of one of the stacks of 4, grab the lid and lift the stack up leaving the bottom. With your other hand swirl the agar media bottle and then carefully pour the warm agar into the bottom dish. Lower the stack back down on top of this poured plate. Now move up to the next dish and lift the stack off leaving only it's bottom and repeat the previous pour. Repeat on all of your dishes until you are done with those 8.
▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀Step 10:

Open your next pack of 8 and place 4 and 4 right on top of the previous poured plates. Repeat the process of step 9 and 10 until you have completed pouring.
▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀Step 11:
Allow the stacks to cool in the flowhood for several hours. At this point you have successfully poured glass plates sandman style. You can now move the plates to large ziplocks for storage or use them right away.
▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▀

Could I get away with doing this tek without a flowhood and using a SAB in its place? Im about to make my first round of agar and I really like the look of this but can I replace the word "flowhood" with "put inside your SAB" and still get generally good results?

I don't recommend pouring plates in a SAB. You can't really have still air with hot agar in there. Expect a heavy contm rate if you do that. You would be better of doing no-pour style agar teks.

FoSo, that makes sense. Hot air=turbulent air, right? awesome write up btw

I'm not the most experienced dude in the world but I've poured 100 plates in a SAB over the last three or so months and have lost only 2 plates to contam... seems to work fine
In any case nice tek, I'm definitely interested in switching to glass. Kinda cool you can sterilize them in the oven, too.

There are certainly some people that seem to get away with it ok, I reckon it depends on your ambient spore loads and how dirty your house is. A lot of stuff doesn't necessarily work for everyone. I had about 20% random contams on average pouring in a SAB personally.

it's ascii art that I copy and pasted haha. I could only get it to work if I did it in the "code" text button though so i couldn't color it

Thanks D
If anyone is wondering why I don't sterilize the plates with the agar, it's because the plates come out dry as a bone from the oven.

Is popping agar dishes in the oven the only way to sterilize them before pouring?
I actually just got glass dishes recently and was curious

I used to do it in the PC but like I said above they come out damp. It works fine just makes it harder to see. Also sometimes the damp plates stick together with surface tension and I have broken a whole stack once trying to get it free
You could buy a toaster oven for cheap at goodwill if you don't have one.

I pour glass petri plates in my SAB. Sometimes it's good, sometimes not. Last time made me sad, 3 clean dishes out of 20. I guess I was getting cocky. Don't be in a rush.

I needed to hear about this.

So instead of using a oven (that we need to have for many other things) to do agar like a normal person you gotta buy some extra shit to maybe (but definitely wont) get the same results?

Just adding another "I've poured 100s of plates in a SAB with no issues" into the mix.
Nice write up! Anything with ascii art gets my vote!

Sane person may be better said.
I'm not trying to bring you down or anything just bringing conversation, how is it worth it to go buy a dork ass toaster machine to do agar when we all have ovens
