using waxpaper on monotubs? coir substrate and no casing? good?
    #17636745 -

so i plan on using wax paper on one of my two monotubs,to compare to a non waxpaper one, should i use it?

how to use it? apply after colonization of the tub? change every day?

i dont want to mist and fan,i just wanna apply waxpaper to the tub, change daily, and thats it,so how should i use it?rr?

will they pin better than not using it?

Wax paper casing tends to initiate fruiting about a week ahead of no casing fruiting. Results vary.
Definitely use it.

Wax paper tek:
Cut or tear a piece of wax paper roughly the size of your substrate.
Crumple it into a ball.
Uncrumple it.
Apply to substrate.
Lift paper to mist and fan as normal.
Replace every 2-3 days or when it becomes soggy.

I've had multiple successful tests substituting the wax paper with bubble wrap (small or large bubbles, both work)
Bubble wrap never needs replaced, can be sanitized with alcohol, and creates an even better micro climate. The downside to bubble wrap is once it's cut to size, that piece is now devoted to that size substrate.

I've also developed a method (which has also been successful) using wax paper on BRF cakes.

Edit: bubbles face down, towards to substrate.
(I've heard that question multiple times)

Wax paper is definitely better than none, but now, all the cool kids are using bubble wrap.

If we are talking about a monotub I'm not sure how you'd use waxpaper on it since they already have a lid and holes drilled specifically for proper FAE. Now waxpaper on a tray in a fruiting chamber is another story and certainly a solid idea.

I don't think I'd ever abandon fanning and misting entirely anyways.

The virtues of wax paper have been well documented, along with detailed directions on how to use it.  You can fan and mist all you want with it.

Bubblewrap tek is new (about a month old), but has been proven and is currently being used by several people.

I may be confused. Back when I used to use waxpaper I'd place it over the top of the tray. Is it now normal to place it on the substrate itself?

You want the wax paper directly laying on the substrate...
It works very well on monotubs.

Ahh never tried that. I can see how that'd reduce the need for misting a bit may need to try this. It's great how new techniques are always being developed on here I've been inactive from the shroomery to long feel like I've fallen behind some.

Just happen to have a lot of bubblewrap.

Seriously, I go inactive for a while every so often. Every time I come back I learn that something is outdated and everyone is doing something else. I love it, how it's always changing. Always more to learn, always new stuff to experiment with.

EDIT: and on topic, as someone else said I don't think I'd stop misting and fanning. Wax paper really just keeps up the humidity in between misting and fanning. The fanning provides the evaporation of the water on top which is a pinning trigger, right?

Right, you really don't need to mist when using wax paper or bubble wrap. Just fan a few times a day.
To much moisture will build up if you continue to mist, which can cause aborts, bacterial contamination, etc.
Plus the fanning keeps a lot of molds from germinating/colonizing. Especially cobweb.

Yes that would be my concern is mold with no fanning. I notice if I'm lazy about my fanning there's a good chance mold will develop. But with the size monotubs I usually do dry spots occasionally happen so this bubblewrap thing sounds promising only as a way to keep humidity up and not mist so much but still fan 2 or 3 times a day.

ugh :girlofdisapproval:

u answered your own question. except u mist and fan in between lol.

but seriously, mushrooms take a little bit of care.  so mist and fan.

thing is i might have a large spore count in my home, its an old house,i and i trichoderma spores on my plants, for the roots,so there might be an abnormal level of trich spores in my house.

i dont wanna open the monotub everyday, incase something bad lands on it,if i use the waxpaper, can i just apply the paper on the monotub, and change it every 3 days? i just dont wanna open the monotub everyday.

You don't have to.
You can use a fan or a lid to push fresh air through your polyfil holes from the outside. The air going in through the holes will be filtered.
I use this method often.

You're thinking about it the wrong way. Mold spores are only a problem when they land on your substrate. You need steady air currents passing through your tub to keep them airborne and frequent fanning to stir up the ones that manage to settle.

Mold thrives in stale air. Instead of focusing on keeping it out, focus on making it place where mold can't grow.

My 2 cents on bubblewrap / other faux casings :

Stamets recommends very high (5k-10kppm) CO2 levels during pre-pinning. The mycelium surges upwards looking for fresher air, or logic along those lines. The benefit of bubble wrap likely comes from better humidity retention - but I'd bet the reduced colonization times are at least in part due to higher co2 levels in the casing and substrate.

Got a little tray going VERY strong right now with a sheet of press-n-seal sitting on the casing.  :scarybeat:
