here are some pics of treasure coast cased in coir. the casing was 1" deep made with 5 pf cakes. the coir was not sterilized and nothing else was added to the coir. take note that this is my first attempt at coir casing. it is very simple and i suggest it to all who have problems casiing.

Really nice flushes man, congrats. Is that from multispore innoculation or cloning? I saw these posted on mycotopia as well. So do you see an advantage to using coir as a bottom layer as opposed to say...verm? I have tons of both. How colonized did you allow the coir to become before you birthed, and was it the gro-brick brand? Also, I love your terrarium design. It seems we both have huge terrariums, so I had some questions for you if you don't mind... Do you have to mist a couple times of day, because I have had some problems with my casings drying out? Do you use an ultrasonic or coolmist, cause I have a coolmist and can't get over 75% humidity with it. Any advice in general on having such a big shelf type terrarium? Thanks man, and again, great job.

Coir sure seems awesome, one hell of a thread revival... 13 years!
So you let your bulk sub colonize and then case it with coir right before you put it into fruiting I am guessing?

for this old grow yes. but you could also do a bulk sub that you case at the same time you spawn. if you use coir/verm as your substrate its very easy to use some extra substrate to case your tub as you spawn. just put 1 quart of grain spawn laid out flat on top of your mixed up grain/sub(mix 4 quarts spawn into sub, leave 1 quart for top layer). then throw that leftover casing evenly right on top. lookup up fahtster's bulk subs.
i prefer a 50/50 coir/verm casing.

Alright. Obviously then the coir would be sterile as it could have formed part of your bulk sub mix.

Coir has done excellently for me as one of my easy options for casing brown rice invitro. It truly is an amazing material. Just wish it weren't so costly... The most costly sub.

Perfect. got several large PF style bags going on now that I was thinking I may throw in a mono with the coir/verm casing.

That's a good deal, yeah. But I haven't found anything like it in-person and wouldn't order coir that way. $1.25 buys 2lb of brown rice, which can grow 8oz dry with 250%BE. Even with such a price as your orders that would double my cost to grow little more than that, just for it to hurry and grow potentially lower-quality fruits in an eggs-in-one-basket fashion requiring another prep and procedure with a contam risk. Like I said, I love coir and it has always done amazingly for me, but I consider it too costly, in more than one way.Quote:

PF bags like this:

Nifty. The casing may be unnecessary for brf/verm cakes but could be helpful depending on your environment. Keep in mind coir casing layers may colonize a lot if not entirely. If you expose to ongoing air exchange before that colonization is done, my experiences with fruiting cased strait-grain containers before the casing is fully colonized indicates that you may get side-pins since the substrate is ready to fruit but the intended pinning surface is not.
