Why debate the afterlife?
    #17410319 -

It seems rather foolish to debate the afterlife. It is something that we can know nothing about until we die. Everyone that has died, has died without certainty. If you want to figure out if there is an afterlife, the only way to do so is to die. To die for that sole purpose, that is a waste of life. The debate causes unnecessary fighting over a topic that no one knows about, and yet people talk as if they were certain they were right. Be realistic, you're about as right about the afterlife as the guy who tried to predict the end-times. You can't. It'll happen when it happens if it happens. Same thing with the afterlife, it might exist, it might now, oh well.

Not only can it not be proven or dis-proven nor does it have any relevancy to our daily lives; but if we were to actually find out there is an afterlife, what good would it do us? All it would do is give us peace of mind, but we can't change it, shape it, or alter it in any way. Trying to communicate with a bee would be a more useful endeavor than trying to communicate with the dead. Why waste so much time of your life (funny because i've wasted 15 minutes writing this to probably just get spammed with trolls) contemplating death? All you end up doing is fighting with yourself and others. It's a headache that you don't need.

Christians say they know they are right, just as muslims, hindus, mormons, buddhists, satanists, etc. It doesn't matter which one you choose because in reality, there's no way any of them know for sure. To choose one would be to condemn all others.

A quick note on god. If you can't figure it out there's really no need to either, except to put an end to violent religion which, due to people's sheep-like instinct to follow the leader, will never happen. It's too good of a manipulative tool.

I believe god is the self we rarely explore. God is our essence, our inner-self, as well as the connections we have to everyone else. There's a lot more to it than that, but there's no need to put such an explanation on here.

In short, stop worrying about what you can't control. Worry about living and trying to survive, not what happens if you don't survive. Life is what matters, not death. What you do in death doesn't have any effect on the living. Do what you can to be the best person you can in life, not in death. Leave your mark and do something with life, don't squander it worrying about the unknowable.

Here's my response to "what happens after death?":

What's happening now?

You don't know what this is. You don't have to overreact and be confused, though. Things make heaps of sense, but the more sense it makes, the more you see it directly, the more you are astonished and the more you simply do not know what this is.

Also, pondering the afterlife is a sign of disconnection from reality and consequently an unfulfilling experience of life. That may be all it is.

So the more we understand it, the less we understand it? Not trying to change your words but that's what i got out of it. Mind explaining a bit more? I'm pretty sure i know all i need to know about what's happening now. We're living. We need eachother to survive, therefore our purpose in life is to better our relationship with our fellow man, bring us closer together. When you realize this, there's really nothing else that needs asking about life. This is all i need to know, what we are, and why we are here. There's no greater purpose, we don't have our own individual purposes, we all have the same purpose which we either ignore or attempt to achieve in different ways. Some simply are nice people, some are peace negotiators. But no, i think i understand all i need to understand.

And true. Like i said, wondering about the afterlife is a waste of your life.

we exit this life as blissfully and ignorantly as we came in, the last few seconds of existence i believe occurs thru the loss of neural connections leading to loss of vocabulary, the vehicle to express what the fuck is going on and you simply slip away to oblivion.  there was nothing for all the millions of years before you and there will be nowt thereafter. then if youre lucky, there may be a single person who has a memory of you for the following 60 years or so.. unless you leave a lasting legacy

I know a few people who are utterly gripped with the afterlife, and the spirit world.

I spent a few years deeply exploring these realms of experience as much as I can from my specific place of knowledge and experience and the most important limiting factor, being alive...
I feel I have some insights, but don't put a whole ton of stock in them or preach about them, as it would be foolishly arrogant and pointless as I really won't know until that time comes...
I've had countless (and I do mean countless...) ontological discussions and am beyond burnt out on them, it's a repetitive intellectual desert for me at this point.

Why focus so much on what may come after this when this may be our only chance at being here? We have the whole time we are dead to experience and understand that.

For me, meditating on my mortality is far more worth my time than attempting to discuss- speculate rather, on the nature of something to whose nature I'd say none of us can truly understand until were past that irreversible threshold.

Any conception you have of the world cannot be right. It can be glorious and even work, but there is some neurological thing where your concept shapes the world you experience. It's not that we're not smart enough, it's just a logical thing.

I agree. I've always been in love with how fluid and transient it is.
The widely varying degrees of cultures and paradigimatic instances from individual to individual are a testament to this.
