I'd like to grow portobello mushrooms at home

Hi

I've just found this site while looking for the nutritionally 'best' vegetables. I have wondered for quite a while about the possibility of growing my own portobellos. If it's any use, I just had an oak tree fall down nearby (for some reason I think this is important though I'm not sure why). Could anyone direct me to a post, site, book that would help? I would like to keep this pretty simple; I've seen recipes that look like they're designed for a biochemist, which I'm not? And what is agar? Would porridge work? What about a rotten oak log?

You can grow your Portobello's on Cased Straw.
And since you have no idea what I just said... you need to use that search function :smile:

Gee, is there nothing simple out there?

I would just like the odd mushroom to eat (and say I grew myself). Does one make ones own 'spawn', like from a ground-up oyster or portobello mushroom from the grocery store? Can I just lay an oyster mushroom on a fallen oak and come back in a week, month, year and have a feast?

Am I risking my life by being involved in this forum?

I really am at the beginning of this and when I search I get overwhelmingly complex (or so they seem) instructions. Even the vocabulary is often beyond me.

You could look into trying a kit, for example available at Sporeworks. Unfortunately they don't seem to have portabella kits if you specifically want that, but those are available elsewhere (I have seen grow logs with such kits in this forum).

yup, it ain't like putting a seed in the ground and waiting, unless you just buy a 'patch' and bury it in the garden. then you can say 'you grew it' i suppose.

mushroom growing involves getting some isolated healthy mycelium (fungus living tissue) to grow big and strong on prepared sterilised nutrients - like in a jar or bag, then changing the environmental conditions to favour mushroom production. you have a lotta reading to do - maybe start with the glossary in the FAQ, then read everything in the basic beginner section. then read it all again. then have a go.

If you have access to a recently downed oak, I would suggest trying your hand at growing Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) You will have some reading to do. (It's not that hard) and spawn plugs. I think Sporeworks may have spawn plugs. If not, mushroompeople.com is a good supplier.

cutting a peice off and putting it in a cut you put in the tree. Depending on the size of the tree it could take a long time... years.

Does one make ones own 'spawn', like from a ground-up oyster or portobello mushroom from the grocery store?  If your willing to wait 3 or 4 years you
can cut off the bases of Portobellos ( you're probably going to have to get
this from a wholesaler, retailers ussually cut the bases off when the put
them on display for sale). Take your cut off bases and put them under some
wood chips that are in a fairly dry, like under an eave, and shady place. Wait three or 4 years. It may or may not work.

When you do cultivation like this you are not starting from a strong base.
There are a lot of competing organisms that want to eat the log, the chips,
whatever, that is why you want to get a strong culture that is growing well
so it can outcompete anything else that may be there.

You could substitute porridge for agar, the mycellium would grow on it.
You would have to work with a spoon though when you did your transfers. :smile:

What about a rotten oak log?
Already colonized by something else, no good.

Why are the people on this site so hard on a new guy just trying
to learn.I'm very new also & have read my but off.But info is hard
to come by, when you ask a newby question & get nothing but BS.

I was told many years ago, there is no dumb question.Come on
fellows, help us new guy's.You go & make up a fine site as this
& a new guy ask what you view as a dumb question & he gets the
grap.

Some ppl here are just tired of answering the same questions over and over. Asking one of these questions will typically result in "use the search function". I personally searched for a year before registering and asking my first question which resulted in, you guessed it, "search for it". Hang in there. Many amazing and generous people use this site and will happily help you.
