air exchange during case running?

TMC says that during case running, there needn't be any air exchange... people here say that contams love stagnant air. what's the verdict? fanning or no fanning during case running?

during incubation just cover the top of the casing with tin foil and poke a few tiny holes in the foil with a needle. Then incubate in the proper temps in the dark

no fanning as long as your casings are not in an air tight container your good to go
at least that what kramer says

Psilocybe Cubensis Growth Parameters taken without permission from Paul Stamets and J.S.Chilton: The Mushroom Cultivator If you want more information (and there is plenty!), go buy the book :
Quote:
Post Casing/Prepinning: Relative Humidify: 90 + %. Substrate Temperature: 84-86?F. Duration of Case Run: 5-10 days. CO2: 5000-10,000 ppm. Fresh Air Exchanges: 0 per hour. Light: Incubation in total darkness.
Fresh Air Exchanges: 0 per hour = no fanning

I haven't read that yet, but I believe stamets suggests a number of things in there that are not appropriate practices. For instance, stamets says that you don't need any air exchange in jars when colonizing. That may be true, but try cooking some grain jars with no tyvek filters and see how fast they colonize compared to ones with lid filters... it makes a huge difference. I think that air exchange is a good idea in casing because Personally I have a big problem withg etting cobweb. Cobweb loves high humidity and C02, so i do air exchange and it works ok. It's not necessary unless you get alot of that.

yeah but like he said "you don't need" it but maybe it helps to have a tyvek there is a big differance between "want" and "need" your mycelium will grow without air yes but it will grow faster when given air and he was just say you don't need air for it to grow and nor you do i have my jars air tight and they are 100% colonized within 2 weeks 1 pint jars

Really? Where does he say that? As far I know, he recommends using filter discs with grain jars.

i think the original question was about the casing run . covering with foil is fine .don't use an air tight container . don't open for fanning, or for any other reason for at least 5 days . i like venting the bottom of my casing trays, especially when using manure .

well that post I did was a exact quote from TMC: Post Casing/Prepinning: Relative Humidify: 90 + %. Substrate Temperature: 84-86?F. Duration of Case Run: 5-10 days. CO2: 5000-10,000 ppm. Fresh Air Exchanges: 0 per hour.
