Re: Contaminated jars are running through worm farm!!!! [Re: senorcafe]

That is true... a well maintained worm farm should not mold too much... but there will always be mold there.  Im thinking that possibly the bacterial contamination helped to potentiate the spread of that cobweb mold, because I dont have mold blooms like that either.  And as far as the maggots go, I have seen that happen before when composting uncolonized or contaminated grains.

and btw, that lettuce, onion, tomato deal- are those store bought? because if they are, they are usually covered in chemicals that stop the decaying process.  Ive seen store bought peppers and tomatoes take ages to compost (with no worms).  If you were to take some home grown produce and toss it in on the top of your worm farm, I guarantee you they will mold.

My bin doesn't mold. The trash I throw in it is sometimes moldy though. They especially like Halloween pumpkins. I load about an equal amount of food per worm ratio. 5 lbs. of crawlers will eat about 5 lbs. of trash without a stink problem happening.

Right... but you have to know that there is mold going on...  it may not be a visible bloom, but its there for sure.

Nice... Im glad to hear other people have worm farms going too.  I have what I call my worm empire  : 6 35 gallon tubs filled half way.

I include "man made materials" (paper) in only two of my bins.  Three others are strictly organic.  The 6th bin is my sacred farm, which gets all sorts of food that I consider sacred.  Its the special one.  The one I usually get my castings out of for my bulk subs.

There are some things you want to avoid giving them... namely anything containing citrus, and tropical plants usually have higher rates of sequestering toxins, which could harm your worms/beneficial microorganisms.  The citrus is harmful because it engenders conditions conducive to the onset of dangerous mold and bacteria which could be pathogenic to you, your worms, and the beneficial microorganisms that you have worked so hard to cultivate.

Oh yeah and the obvious meat, bread, and most other synthetically manufactured "products" should be avoided.

well since tis topic is rolling now...

how many bins do you have? (like the bins in the bins if you understand me) currently i have a rubbermaid rough neck with tiny holes drilled everywhere on all sides except a middle band on the 4 walls. and it rests above a bigger sterlite bin with 1/2 inch holes 5 on long sides 2 on short.

the instructions i got said to use three of the smae bins the top is food and worms the middle is castings and the third is tea.
i through mine together from what i had as someone gave me a sac of worms un expectintly and whn i move i plane on going 2 50 gal farms 3 bins each

 to everyone

Nice setup dude.... yours is alot more fancy than mine...

I use my grandfathers old 35 gallon tubs that he used as fish tanks for his oscars. It all started when my aunt gave my little brother some red wrigglers for Xmas one year... his worm farm was neglected but still thrived (amazingly it only got coffee grounds and filters, yet had hundreds of worms)...

I took some of his worms and started my own single worm farm using one of those tubs filed with a little manure, a little vegetable produce, some leaves, and grass clippings... all just thrown into the tub- no holes in the sides (just the lids left loose).

Today I have 6 such farms as discussed earlier in the thread.  They are each filled approximately 5/12 of the way full currently.  Ofc that one I did the experiment in is a damn mess now.  I should mention that it was one of the farms that had "man made products in it."

I make my worm tea by taking a mesh screen and stretching it over a basin.

Next I reach into a worm farm and dig around for the most "finished", "mature" worm castings I can find... I place a hanful or two onto the screen, above the basin.

I then pour room-temperature water through the worm castings.  Lift the screen up and dump the remainder back into the worm farm...

repeat as many times as necessary...

and then take the bucket/basin of medium grade liquid and pour it though another, finer grade mesh...

after this extraction, you should have a deep black liquid with very fine particulate matter in suspension, with no worms or worm eggs (little yellow/orange/red balls.)  Now you have dank ass worm casting tea to use on all of your flora.

foliar spray or in the soil:strokebeard3:

ive always just taken the casting and added them to 5 gallons of water and then used it to water my 3 plants on my porch and then once a week they get regular feedings with store bought organic ferts 24-8-16 if i remember correctly
