Reusing Contaminated Jars?
    #703153 -

First.. let start of saying... DO NOT START YOUR JARS DRUNK!... ok anyways... 11 of my jars are contaminated out of 12. I'm sure the 12th one will be on it's way to green mold heaven too. Can I re-use these jars? I just bought these a week ago and my local ACE hardware said it was their last box. I'm sure it's going to take them a few weeks to get it back in stock. I have new spores, a new pressure cooker and all of the other goodies and I'm eager to start my next batch. Can I reuse these jars? I did a search and someone said "boil" them but he wasn't talking about jars previously contaminated. Should I soak em water with a little bleach for a little bit and then boil them? Or should I just wait until ACE restocks? Thanks again in advance for your help

All your ideas will work. You can spray them down with lyso land/or alcohol. Just make sure they are cleaned out before you start your culture. You can get more jars at albertsons groceries, Vons or any super K-mart or Walmart or Target.

I've tried K-mart, Walmart, AND Target. They're so ghetto over here. None of them carry it but thanks.. I'll clean em out tonight before I get even more grossed out over this green shit.

yes you can reuse them...just wash them with hot soapy water. That will be enough...you are using a pressure cooker right? anything that may be lef in there will get sterilized anyways next time....but just wash em real good...i have some jars i been using for years.

oh by the way...ace hardware stores will order jars for you no prob...the ace here gets shipments twice a week...

did i tell you how hot you are?

I wash my jars with an anti-bacterial soap...and then to dry them and kill off any remaining nasties, I pop them in a warmed oven for a bit. (250F, 15-20 minutes...don't let them get too hot too fast, or they'll crack).

But that's just what I do....YMMV.

If they were my jars I'de wash them clean and then soak them in bleach water and rinse. At that point any contam spores should be dead. If you properly pressure cooked your jars any strange contams would perish so the source of contam must be your innoc procedure. I guess you need to be more careful with innoculating them in the future. Clean your work area with lysol and spray down everything and wipe with lysol. Spray the air a little before you start too. Or better yet get a glovebox. If you get a clear rubbermaid plastis box it's pretty easy to cut out holes to put your arms in, while working, and use as a glovebox. Also be sure you have the vermiculite seal at the top, it acts to protect from contam, but don't push it down at all to try to make it thicker or denser because colonization will slow down to a schreeching halt.

Actuallly... I didn't have a PC at the time. I boiled the jars and used very poor sterlization precautions. I just got a PC today so I'm hoping for the best next time And thanks so much for the info. You guys are so helpful!

The oven tek is where you turn on your oven real low like 150 degrees or some shit.. slide the bottom rack out a little bit and do the innoculating on the rack. The heat rising helps keep contams away from your jars....

and pc'ing means pressure cooking

Oven tek...umm never used it cause I have a glovebox, but basically you turn the oven on and let it heat up...open it up and pull the tray out a little and set all your jars on there. Supposedly the warm up draft will keep all the contams away. PC'ing stands for "pressure cooking" ya know the thing you just bought ;-) jk. Good luck!
