Innoculated resterilized contaminated jar...
    #564272 - 02/26/02 09:51 PM (21 years, 7 months ago)

After reading about how one of the shroomerites got sick upon opening and breathing near a contaminated jar, I decided to resterilize my bacteria-infested substrate before throwing it out.

As I autoclaved some other fresh jars at the same time, I decided to re-innoculate it it instead of tossing it. If the bacteria were killed would the new spores take over or would bacteria by-products prevent fresh mycelial growth?

I will give the answer in a week or so, but what do you guys think?

I have thought about this, but have never tried it because my gut tell's me that it wouldn't work. I really think the major factor will be just how far along the contaminant got. If it was only allowed to go a day or two before resterilization, I think there may be a good chance the mycelium will be okay. Even if it does work, my guess is that yields will be diminished.

I've done it and it works fine. However, I doubt you will find a growing text that recommends it. I think the bigger danger is oversterilization of the substrate which alters the chemical makeup and inhibits mycelial growth. Two normal 15 psi sterilization cycles doesn't seem to cause that problem.

some bacteria create toxic waste products. i doubt these wastes would be destroyed. I would be cautious they would get into the shrooms.

My friend did an experiment once to test this idea (more or less). She was having a hard time getting rid of contamination and was trying to figure out where it was coming from. She created four jars, pf-tek style, but no innoculation. She sterilized the jars for 1 hr at 28 psi (in a pelton and crane autoclave). She injected 'dirty' water (no spores) into the jars and placed them into the incubator at 83F and waited for the jars to contaminate. After contamination all four jars were autoclaved for 1 hour at 18 psi (not 28 this time) and the put back in the incubator (83F) untouched. After a week three of the four jars were contaminated again. The fourth jar was still clean after two weeks. My friend now tosses all contaminated jars in the trash rather than trying to reclaim them.

I don't see why it wouldn't work in theory. However, substrate is pretty cheap (rye is about $1.50/lb here) so I wouldn't bother with the hassle and worrying that would come with resterilization.

my cat tried this with his jars when they got a yeast infection(apple cider/wine smell). His python recommended vagisil but I told my cat that only works with women. So he resterilized at 15psi for 20-30 minutes and had a good flush. Though hes black he believes only contaims of the same color are scary and says won't play with them. Actually he won't play with any color contaims and wouldn't have tried with the yeast if he hadn't ran out of vermiculite & $.
gotta go... he's about to feed me.

Old, post, but to add to the thread, steam sterilizing doesn't work, except for pf tek cakes, but, a large % end in contamination. Pressure cooking fresh brf/grain jars @15PSI for 90mins. Start the countdown when steam comes out of the PC release valve, then put the correct 15PSI weight on it n' PC for 90mins from that point on. Even with pc'ing, contams from later stages enter the picture, so give yourself an edge and buy a large, quality pressure cooker. I have had great success using it as opposed to steaming BRF jars, or rye berries. Peace psychonauts.  -SHROOMARICAN

Lol, this dudes probably not even cultivating anymore.. 16yrs ago. I run across some old threads while surfing shroomery. Hehe! PS- CAMBODIAN cubes of my cultures are extra potent, even the larger pins caused a mild trip with some fire cannabis and 93mgs of methadone and 30mgs of adderall and 1800mgs of neuronton makes for a trippy, euphoric experience, beautiful sunny day, 4-10-18 -SHROOMARICAN
