Normal dish washing soap and a good scrub work fine.

I disagree... I had some contaminated jars, bleached and scrubed the *crap* out of them, but it wasn't enough. The next batch grown in those jars got contamed again because I didn't clean them enough. (I'm pretty sure that was the source of my contam) The next time, I washed them, then pressure cooked the empty jars. As the jars cooked, I could actually smell the rotten bacteria smell escaping from the pressure cooker release valve-- meaning that once again, the scrubing wasn't enough. I guess it may depend on the nature of the contams.

I am paranoid about contams now. I intend to heat sterilize my jars before using them now. I figure, spending an extra hour might save me a month of heartache, so it's worth it.
