Must I clean the jars?

This may be a stupid question but after I birth my cakes do I have to wash my jars before reusing them?
I don't see what the purpose would be if I'm just gonna be sterilizing them anyway.

Hello
As soon as the cake is out of the jar, i dont c why you should leave it "dirty". Is that much of a problem to wash it a little bit? Your question make me think that you are -sorry- somehow lazy and you should know that CLEAN, TIDY, STERILE are the keyz of healthy shroomies.
its like asking: "i like spitting on the floor while innoculating the jars - i like doing it far away from them, so is it a problem?" Thats a question with the same answer. lol

Hold on you guys, I'm not lazy. I was cleaning my jars when the thought hit me, why am I doing this? Then I started thinking any left over mushy residue might actually help the next jars of substrate.

Any left over Mycelium would be killed in the sterlization process during your next attempt, anyhow. Maybe you should read up on doing grain to grain transfers, or somthing to that idea..
Anyhow, you should still wash the jas..

It would be better to wash them because the mycelia left in them would be nutrients for contaminiants. Germs would have one up on you. Play it safe, and wash them. bluhoney

GSUS!
I didnt realized that one f*** word i used, was going to convert this thread to a flame one. Sorry for that, i had no intentions. Perhaps i didnt express myself well, english isnt my native language!
well, my point was that most important of all is to THINK sterile. This is most important than working sterile, because if u follow the teks like a robot, there is a big chance to result in error. If you THINK sterile it means you understood WHY to work sterile, so your method will be 99% safe.
As jars are made of glass, they are easy to clean. I dont think there is actually a need to wash them thoroughly with soap, lysol-dettol or flame them with propane gas. But just wash them under the tap, so that nothing seems left inside. After all, it is ugly to fill dirty jars, isnt?
PEACE

Yeh,
A few people missed your point entirely. Its an interesting idea, one that probably won't work but nonetheless you should be commended for thinking it.
To those whose missed the point, you fools!

I admit I sometimes don't wash my jars as good as I should. It's hard to get everything off the glass. I've never had problems with them contaminating though.

I thought it was an interesting idea as well, I don't think I deserved to be called lazy for sure. Thanks to those who saw where I was coming from. As for difficulty of cleaning them, it wasn't too bad except for the metal lids. The verm tends to stick to the lids like cement and the metal around the 4 holes tends to snag on the washcloth. I found some plastic lids today at True-Valu and hopefully they'll help a lot. ~Out

You probably COULD, since the PC should kill pretty much anything in the jar. I doubt there'd be any noticable benefit, though, aside from not having to wash the jars. I'm not sure that it would particularly invite contams either, unless there was something else eating the mycelium in the first place (I wouldn't do it with a contamed jar, anyway).
My cat usually just rinses with hot water and rubs one of those plastic-bristled, long-handled dish scrubbers against the edge while rinsing to loosen up the muhungas. After that he just tosses 'em in the dishwasher with the rest of the dishes.
