Plain Bloody Stupid anti-weed propoganda

I just posted this on another site, but it was so daft I thought I'd put it here too...


Someone here recently linked to a US health organisation propoganda page, and it contained this gem:

"Three joints smoked per week for three to six months carries the same probability of developing lung cancer as smoking a pack of cigarettes daily for 20 to 30 years. "

lolololololololololol

Even acounting for the fact they impress on you, that a joint holds 4X the amount of tar as a cig, that's so far off it's ridiculous. 30 YEARS OF A PACK A DAY? Doing the maths...

Taking 30 years of 20 a day, that's 219000 cigs! Plus the leap years... so thats another 140.

Taking 6 months of 3 joints a week, thats about 80 joints.

So 80 joints is equal to 219140 cigs? That would mean one joint does as much cancer-causing harm as 2739.25 cigarrettes. Bejeezus!


How can people expect us to believe such bull?

Or, to put it in other terms ( assuming lifetime cancer risk is cumulative and not acute for both ) you could smoke one joint a week for 10 years, and be as well off as someone who smoked two and a half packs a day from birth until they died of old age.

They don't expect you to believe it. They expect people who already think Weed Is Bad ( think middle aged, Middle America, never done any illegal drugs, married, go to church every Sunday, work in an office, still have an antenna flag and a Bush/Cheney sticker on their white 2001 Ford Expedition ) to kind of skim over it, without thinking too hard or taking the time to do the math, and file it away until the next time a marijuana legalisation measure comes up on the ballot.
