Sorry, I just had to reply to this particular post, it's absolutely ridiculous. Also remember, for any foreign substance to effect the body in any way it must bind to receptors meant for natural chemicals in the body. For example: The only reason Heroin and Opiates of any kind cause you to feel good and calm and euphoric is because it binds to the same receptor that ENDORPHINS bind to, therefor the body experiences much of the same symptoms of runners high, synthetically. Eh? So? Are you trying to imply that the fact that cannabinoids bind to receptors is somehow harmful? Likewise, cannabinoids bind to some receptor in our brain meant to mediate the effects of battling anxiety, producing hunger, calming nerves, and so forth. Proof that THC can infact become physically addictive. The ONLY reason it is not recognized is because the symptoms of cessation from long term chronic marijuana use are not properly documented as no study has yet to subject humans to an "illegal" substance and then study the long term problems that arise. Actually, TONS of studies have been done. I get the feeling you didn't even search PubMed... Goto: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi and search for marijuana, or marijuana addiction. You'll find hundreds of studies done on the effects of marijuana. From withdrawl symtoms (existant, but minor compared to many other drugs), or long term effect on IQ (doesn't really look like anything). Smoking weed occasionally is not going to mess up your ballance, it takes a while, smoking everyday for over 3 weeks is likely to begin the reactions. Why do I get the funny feeling that you just typed that sentance because it 'felt' true, not because it's based on any research or evidence?

Uh, I said cannabinoids bind to a receptor somewhere in the body that natural chemicals bind to, sort of like a substitute.
and I say the 3 weeks because it doesent matter WHEN it starts thats an approximation but in my experience people dont become heavy pot smokers overnight.

And the long term effects on the IQ are documented as I myself have read several studies in the past year. I've also never really known an intelligent or witty pot smoker since their mental stimulation is derived from watching the matrix and staring at things for long periods of time.

I could be mistaken, but doesn't the human brain have receptors specifically for THC? Someone set me straight here.

Even if it does, it isent there so we can smoke marijuana and get high. It's there for natural cannabinoids that occur in the body.

"I've also never really known an intelligent or witty pot smoker since their mental stimulation is derived from watching the matrix and staring at things for long periods of time." That's called an idiot. Sure, lots of idiots smoke pot, but not all pot smokers are idiots. Just the ones who wear their pot smoking "like a badge". Just saying you know a bunch of dumb pot smokers doesn't prove anything. Which studies are you referring to, I found this: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query...t_uids=14651500 "CONCLUSIONS: Findings support the view that cannabis use may act to decrease educational achievement in young people. It is likely that this reflects the effects of the social context within which cannabis is used rather than any direct effect of cannabis on cognitive ability or motivation." and this: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query...t_uids=11949984 "INTERPRETATION: Current marijuana use had a negative effect on global IQ score only in subjects who smoked 5 or more joints per week. A negative effect was not observed among subjects who had previously been heavy users but were no longer using the substance. We conclude that marijuana does not have a long-term negative impact on global intelligence. Whether the absence of a residual marijuana effect would also be evident in more specific cognitive domains such as memory and attention remains to be ascertained." also this: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query...st_uids=3262049 "Compared with a control group, the cannabis users were found to react slowly in perceptuo-motor tasks, but not to differ in intelligence or memory tests." and to contrast that with say, cocaine, here's a study on the long term effects of that: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query...t_uids=14591987 "Results suggested significant residual impairment in verbal learning efficiency subsequent to chronic cocaine use that results from memory storage difficulties rather than attentional impairment or general intellectual reduction." Already the pot smoker has shown a better ability to actively research his point, and back it up with facts instead of anecdotal evidence, which is completely meaningless.

One might also argue that the stomach wasn't put there to digest protein shakes and vitamin pills, but people are taking those things without any negative effects.

Look what happens when we eat vitamins on an empty stomach.... Look what happens when we use heroin to bind to endorphin receptors. It's not naturally there for the purpose of intentionally abusing or using it, it's there because of the patterns involved in the evolution of ALL biological species and plants.
For example, cocaine effects MANY MANY animals in many of the same ways it does humans, because we share the same principles in rewarding our behavior. Testosterone effects many many animals in the same ways it does humans too: It adds muscle, adds fierceness, adds dominance. We're all growing and evolving in a way to correlates to every other life and plant form therefor if a plant so happens to create a chemical that just so happens to exist in our own bodies too, its not that it was put in that plant for us to smoke. Although we may choose to do so there is significant danger in purposely throwing our bodies out of ballance in a frequent manner.
AS FOR IQ STUDIES:
Heres just one of many I can find if I invest the time in doing so:
# Current and former marijuana use: preliminary findings of a longitudinal study of effects on IQ in young adults.
Fried P, Watkinson B, James D, Gray R. Department of Psychology, Carleton University, Ottawa, Ont. peter_fried@carleton.ca
BACKGROUND: Assessing marijuana's impact on intelligence quotient (IQ) has been hampered by a lack of evaluation of subjects before they begin to use this substance. Using data from a group of young people whom we have been following since birth, we examined IQ scores before, during and after cessation of regular marijuana use to determine any impact of the drug on this measure of cognitive function. METHODS: We determined marijuana use for seventy 17- to 20-year-olds through self-reporting and urinalysis. IQ difference scores were calculated by subtracting each person's IQ score at 9-12 years (before initiation of drug use) from his or her score at 17-20 years. We then compared the difference in IQ scores of current heavy users (at least 5 joints per week), current light users (less than 5 joints per week), former users (who had not smoked regularly for at least 3 months) and non-users (who never smoked more than once per week and no smoking in the past two weeks). RESULTS: Current marijuana use was significantly correlated (p < 0.05) in a dose-related fashion with a decline in IQ over the ages studied. The comparison of the IQ difference scores showed an average decrease of 4.1 points in current heavy users (p < 0.05) compared to gains in IQ points for light current users (5.8), former users (3.5) and non-users (2.6). INTERPRETATION: Current marijuana use had a negative effect on global IQ score only in subjects who smoked 5 or more joints per week. A negative effect was not observed among subjects who had previously been heavy users but were no longer using the substance. We conclude that marijuana does not have a long-term negative impact on global intelligence. Whether the absence of a residual marijuana effect would also be evident in more specific cognitive domains such as memory and attention remains to be ascertained.

Dude, that's the same study I posted, read the whole thing... Second last sentence: "We conclude that marijuana does not have a long-term negative impact on global intelligence." C'mon, surely you can do better than that, what with your mind being all sharp and whatnot from not smoking pot.

What about short term? If you keep smoking and never cease for a long term then thats the same as long term lowering of the IQ.
I'm also not bashing weed smokers at all, I'm debating the effects of MJ.

"What about short term? If you keep smoking and never cease for a long term then thats the same as long term lowering of the IQ."
Kind of. The difference is, if it actually did have a long term lowering of your IQ, the longer you smoked for, the lower it would get. In this particular study, people who smoke heavily show a relatively small decrease in IQ points while they are smoking heavily, and it goes back up to normal when they stop. Also, considering that 4.1 IQ points is hardly anything, and IQ tests aren't even that great a measurement of abilities in the real world, I'm not too concerned.
I can do lots of cognitive tasks while stoned, there are some that are more difficult to do, like computer programming (I can think up solutions more easily while stoned, I just lose track of what I'm doing while implementing them), so I schedule my smoking accordingly.
Weed is less addictive than coke, e, meth, or heroin. The health effects are far less severe (except, perhaps, for VERY strictly controlled heroin use), and the effects on the brain are far less (again except for heroin, never heard of any long term brain damage from heroin). It's stupid to claim that it's completely unaddictive, or that smoking it doesn't put you at a greater risk for lung cancer, but there's no way you can deny that it's safer to use than those drugs, even regularly.

God, please dont use the "natural" claim its so overdone. Natural means "by nature" cocaine is as natural as your gonna get dude, morphine, hydrocodone, codeine, thebaine, DMT, etc etc all 100% NATURALALIS!
If anything, Marijuana is the LEAST natural because of all the mix breeding the strains have went through to imrpove potency under the hands of man.
Those are extracted snort a line and chew a couple of coca leaves, there's a difference. Morphine isnt as natural as opium where it comes from.. its extracted to make it easier to take the desired dose. You doing the apples and oranges thing again.

Listen here guy, I can choose to be a nonproductive being but I choose to be quite exceptional and I choose to smoke literally tons of maryjane. I also make all of my meals, lean protein and lots of veggies. Even when I get the never ending munchies, it is harder than anything I have ever had to do because such pleasure comes from eating the foods we love especially carby foods which happen to be my favorite too. You can smoke heavily and live a healthy, productive lifestyle but it will always be fairly difficult.

read OP, non of the other thread i agree. weed is not a high, i prefer the expression "stoned" and yes, its can be mental addictive to some, just as the video games, tv or peanut butter can be mentally addictive to some. that terminology holds no meaning to me
i have severely lost my fondness for weed in the last couple months it makes me too damn tired nowadays also i always get a groggy sorta feel, and headaches all the time but we all have different body chemistry's so i having nothing personal against the drug in fact i was pretty head over heals for cannabis when i first started
