The 2012 London olympic games begin this weekend!

i know this isn't in the sports forum, and most people probably don't care. BUT, the 2012 London Olympic Games is set to begin this week! it's an event that only happens once every 4 years, and is a great display of worldwide solidarity....



even if you aren't much of a fan of the actual olympic games and observing the various contests, i would in the very least emplore you to watch the opening/closing ceremonies! these things are epic productions and are history in the making.

the best athletes from around the world all assemble in one area to compete for glory. i myself am generally not an avid sports fan, but i like to watch the 'finals' of any sport, because it's always great to witness the best of the best do their thing.


alot of people also don't realise just the sheer ammount of human triumph and accomplishment that can be found in the olympics games. marathon runners who run 20 kilometres and finish the race on their hands and knees crawling across the finish line. 50 metre track and field/swimming sprints where technique is thrown out the window and the athletes just cross the line with brute force and determination. these are people making and breaking history here, to some of these athletes it is the pinacle of their careers. i think alot of people who don't pay attention to these sort of things really miss out on alot of wonderful shit.

i have heard discussion with people who dislike the olympics, because they say that the olympics is really only a test of " who has the superior genetics ". what they mean by this is, only the human beings who get the luckiest rolls in terms of genetics are capable of winning at the olympics. people like Usain Bolt (one of the greatest runners of all time) and Michael Phelps (champion swimmer) come to mind.

in some ways, yes this arguement rings true, because the people with natural ability are clearly going to have a competitive advantage of the average human being. for instance, they say Cadel Evans (champion bike rider) has a heart that is considerably larger then that of the average human. But at the same time, even if one does have a good set of genetics, this doesn't discount the grueling training regimes and dedicated lifestyles that these athletes must observer to really succeeed.

i would think people would have to admire the life dedication (all 16 years of them haha) to actually have that chance to compete against the world.

from a sports aspect, i admire the contestants just based on the above statement.

I'll be watching the basketball to see if Spain, Argentina, Lithuania, or France can beat the US team.  And I'll check in with the other sports, but don't really make it a priority to watch them.

I'm glad I live close to Canada because the coverage on the Canadian channel is much better than NBC.

nbc has shit coverage..

they say over 150 hours of it..

which means 50 hours of real coverage and the other 100 hours re-runs and fucking so called high lights.

I dont admire them.  I think its a real poor life choice to spend your youth training for olympic competition.

Even if it's a competition of the best genetics, isn't the Olympics supposed to be a competition between the best in the world?
If you have a genetic advantage, that makes you better for it.  I don't even see the argument TBH.

The Olympics have been going on for way longer than we've even known about genetics in the sense if how you imply in your post.
