The foil seal will have holes after innoculation. So the verm helps prevent contaminates from going straight to the hole.

I think it's explaind somewhere in the tec. The only time my friend didn't use it, he got contamination around the lid.

you pack the substrate, and then cut the foil into sqauresu pack squares into the jar, but dont compact it in....justy have the foil come right up to the mix, and flat against jar sides....so it makes a little pond thype thing. fill this pond with dry vermiculite....put the cover on. Four jars with ramsey, 4 without, 4 are almost 100% colonized and look perfect, 4 are about 80 with some questionable spots....so it seems to work well for me, but other ppl have said its a waste...my tek recomends it.....

I've used the ramsey seal along with the poor man's oven tek) for 8 (6 1/2 pint, 2 pint) jars with no contamination whatsoever (knock wood), and very long colonization times coz I'm a moron, so it seems to work really well for me.
I recommend it, its really not much extra work at all.
