Do these look contaminated?
    #4589961 - 08/28/05 03:28 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I'm using vermiculite + BRF

It's been 5 days. In the jar thats colonizing the fastest, most of the mycellium is a light shade of grey. After reading several times that it should be "Bright white", i am concerned that it may be contaminated. Take a look...

the other jars are showing slight signs of grey.. is this a serious sign of contamination?? should i just give up on this batch?

Hhhhhhmm...I really can't tell.  But, yea, you're right.  It should be a bright right.  And correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I see a patch of grey ontop.
My guess would be that it has slight contams.  But, leave it to more experienced people.

Good luck.

It's difficult to tell because the picture is out of focus. Can you try taking another one? (Sometimes, if you're in brighter light, or get a little further back from the subject, your focus will be better)

green mold definitely... it's that really pale green mold with white mycelia that fools you at first...

Na. Looks fine to me bro. Give it the good sniff test if there is verm on top. My first cakes made me worry cuz the same thing, but a week later they were nice and white. If you dont smell anything, thats good. If you smell a nice mushroom smell, thats even better. But if anything smells bitter, or sour, throw that shit out.

you'll only get a sour smell when you have bacterial contams... you should not sniff a jar that you suspect has a fungal contam, very bad things can happen (look up mycotoxicosis)

i say that jar will be overrun with nasty green stuff come tomorrow

sorry i took a whole bunch of pictures and that one was the best.. crappy digital cam.. i used this one because even though its out of focus, the color is dead on to how it actually looks.. whereas the other pics showed darker/lighter grey than it actually was because of lighting problems..

the rapid growth is a dead giveaway... it takes at least 4 days for shroom spores to germinate... at five days, you should only see a small spot of white at the inoculation point... green mold grows a lot faster...

it was my first time innoculating, and i put too much pressure on the syringe when i was doing the first one. Half my spores went into one jar. I'm not sure if this is the jar that i screwed up on, but is it possible that this could be the reason for the rapid growth instead?

Why? The only sure answer is time. I see growth in 3 days with my Golden Teachers. If you have a filter on top, your not gonna have kidney failure or seizures or anything from sniffing the jar. The filter will keep the spores/ bacteria from reaching you.

a shitload of spores won't germinate any faster... you can't getr that kind of growth in 5 days with mushies, period.

you might see some growth at 3 days, sure, but that jar is halfway colonised... mushroom mycelia just doesn't grow that fast...
