When they dry they weigh literally nothing, they dont spore print. I have a feeling theyre more potent fresh rather than dry for some reason I wonder if others will agree. I dont really know much about them, they seem to prefer growing in the dark/black woodchip.

wow, very blue!  thank you for show pictures!

You say no spores?  is that just your area, or the whole species?  how can they reproduce with no spore?

They do have spores but its next to impossible to get them to sporeprint for some reason. This species has only been found in New Zealand as far as im aware, Ive found them in a bunch of different local places and none of them print spores on paper or tinfoil.

Nice:sunny:  Trouble with the spores is indeed embedded into the actual species. The problem with obtaining spore deposits is not due to environmental conditions but rather that the species just does not have a good spore production. Looking at this species under the microscope, the hymenium is almost sterile with very few spores visible. Getting prints of this species for cultivation uses is pretty much impossible, and most likely would end in failure unless a culture is created through tissue cloning.

When working with wild prints one must isolate clean cultures on agar. Once isolated, the cultures are usually are not pure, but contain five or six dikaryotic strains, unless strain isolation is performed. When working with fungi with a tetrapolar mating system, only one third of all the dikaryons are capable of producing fruit bodies, so as you can see with the lack of spores, it is very difficult if not impossible to get a fruiting strain. If you ever do produce some prints, even if they are barely visible to the naked eye, a few users on here would love to work with them, and possibly crack the code to making a set of genetics with good spore production. This is quite a unique species, and anyone that comes across it should try EVERYTHING possible to produce prints.

Love of all kinds, from friends and family, thy self and our neighbors. Beautiful sunrises to the darkest clouds dancing above in the sky. To forgive, learn, share and express. This is the only thing a man such as myself can ask for. What comes as the result is nothing short of the core of human existence, to truly live free in body and mind.

Haha, nice post, it seems extremely familiar to me, I couldn't have said it better myself, hang on, I did say it!

mmhmmmmm:murray: That's the best explanation I've ever heard on why that species doesn't really produce spore prints. I still like the name you told me. P. "aureoalbescens" sounds much better than P. inskii

I find them slightly weaker than subs in potentcy, more visual though.  Really hard to get a spore print as mentioned which is disapointing. They can be found on fruiting on grass/soil too if i read correctly.

It's the only one I can come up with, it is definitely not due to environmental factors but rather the problem lies within the genetics of the species, I was just talking with Symon via pm and explained that I have tried with hundreds of specimens and only very rarely acquired a very faint print, isolation of any viable cultures was not possible:shrug:

Either way, the species has some beautiful macroscopic characteristics, I wish shroomydan had never coined that name though, I hate it, please stop calling it that, it is better to refer to it as an undescribed Psilocybe species belonging in Section Aztecorum.

I would not know about potency but it's true that it can be found fruiting amongst grass from soil and in that habitat it is almost indistinguishable from P. semilanceata, it is a good representative of a group of species mainly belonging in Section Aztecorum that form an evolutionary bridge between the true lignicolous species most of which belong in Sect. Cyanescens with the true terricolous species mostly found in Sections Cordisporae, Mexicanae and Zapotecorum.

Does anyone have any opinions of if they lose potency when dry. Because I've tested both and I found fresh almost twice as strong as dried. Theyre a more 'steady' and less up and down trip also.

anyone ever tried that ?

You still end up with the same problem in the end. I would imagine that the best way to get anywhere with this species would be to clone numerous specimens from tissue samples and try to fruit every one of them, selecting the best spore producers and continuing for a few generations. After a good spore producing gene pool is created, you can then take prints from there and continue again. I could see this process taking a few years to get a reliable spore producing set of genetics. For making personal patches, best bet would probably be stem butts, or a transplant of some mycelium to a new spot.

All species of active fungi loose potency when drying, to some extent. It's due to the active chemicals oxidizing and decomposing into different chemicals. That's why fresh fungi are always more potent than dry, but you must consume more to achieve the results, compensating for the 70-90% water weight.

I dont think P. Subs lose any potency when drying to be honest, this is a significant loss in these.

Holy crap. I've been wondering about these for so long!!!! My friend and SWIM found a rather large patch of these at a New World in Dunedin last year... Sadly he got arrested on the way out with them. SWIM also found ~30 a week ago in Christchurch. Thank you so much for this info!
