Ive read through a couple teks for this.. using malt, honey, karo.. etc.
would relatively pure cane sugar (sucrose, basically) dissolved in water work? it seems like it would, unless it caramelized or something. im not sure about what temps that occurs. im curious as to people's personal experiences with this type of thing. not neccesarily sugar water... but the succes rates of using a liquid mycelium inoculate.

have not tried that particular sugar. i know dextrose works spectacularly. IMO liquid culture is a godsend. in fact, every spore syringe i use goes into a liquid culture. this not only multiplies your syringes but also provides a means of "screening" the spore syringe for contaminants before use. innoculated substrates take off like wildfire as well giving mycelium the ehad start on contams. edit: forgot to mention that my sucess rate can be considered 100%. the only times a culture contaminates is when the originating spore syringe is contaminated. i have developed stratgeies for determining this (multiple cultures prepared in different batches from the same syringe). The #1 rule for LC is not EVER EVER EVER let the liquid culture see open air.

yes you have to use polyfil or something in the lid of the liquid culture for air exchange, don't let them see open, contaminated air is what is meant. edit: dont open the lid in other words!

I know this will sound really stupid, and bear with me, I'm new at this ... could I use maybe ... a paper towel or a sheet of fabric softener as a filter? I've gotta improvise in most of what I'm doing ...

I wouldn't substitute here, contamination would most likely occur, if you are in dire need go to the post office and ask for "tyvek envelopes" you can use tyvek as a filter. edit: also, polyfil is just like the cottony stuff in pillows, i would think craft stores would have that.

cornsyrup+ water+spores= incubate for a couple of days then add about 8-10cc of hydrogen peroxide to help with contams and gas exchange. i've noticed that with out gas exchange the cultures growth will be overall small. Amanita Dreamer

get some tyvek at your post office, its easy as shit to get. and i don't know that i agree with the "never let it see air" if you are making mycelium syringes and the mycelium is on the bottom of the jar... and you suck the mycelium directly into a sterile syringe, then contams can't get in either the syringe or the mycelum. The water provides a barrier.
