 Liquid Mycelium Culture Duration.

I have this kinda friend who i don't know too well who was telling me about his liquid mycelium experiment. He took 2cups of water and roughly 1t of honey and put them into a jar. That calculates out to about 96% water 4% nutrients, the established optimal growth ratio. For about 4 or 5 days it grew like hell, and then it just stopped. No change in conditions or anything, no contams everything looks fine. My friend was wondering if the mycelium could eat all the nutrients this fast... theres maybe an inch or an inch and a half of liquid mycelium in this 2 quart mason jar. Can That kid add more honey to it to get it to start growing again? Thanks for any feedback.

Liquid honey is generally ready to use around 4 or 5 days...so im not sure why you are waiting longer, for more...I think its possible that its gone through all the nutrients. If your looking for more, use the solution you do have to inject a bunch of half pint honey jars. My friend uses a tea spoon of honey per 1/2 pint....makes tons of innoculum.

Ive used the water drained from grain in varried degrees of dilution...PC'd with the grain jars...70/30 ratio of water/drainage....worked pretty well....
adding more honey is a really bad idea...using some of that mycelium to inoc another jar of honeywater is a better one....less chance of loosing it all to contamination...and yes....a little honey is not much for those little guys to eat....

Yeah -- you only want a little bit of simple sugars or the mycelium will die in its own waste.

I see, so basically the mycelium uses up the nutrients very fast, within a few days to a week. I'll tell that kid to prepare more jars of solution so that he can innoculate them with the liuqid mycelium. I have another question... is it good to shake the jars all the time or just a little or what? Thanks for all the feedback you guys answered my question. I'll give you some mshrooms for that

Shaking isnt necessary. Personally i leave them for 2 days, then daily give a slight swirl and yuo can see a hurrican ripping it up in the jar, thats all you need.
More jars definately sounds like a good plan, this tek is so easy eh?

I know you said there were no contams, but bacterial growth can halt these cultures as well. It's usually given away by cloudiness in the solution, funky smell.
Is the culture colonizing the surface of the water? What happens sometimes is that the fungus, an aerobic organism, forms a skin over the solution's surface [the surface is the area of highest available oxygen, yeah?]. This results in little oxygen diffusing below. You'll notice that TMC/GGMM's pictures of these setups involve beakers with stir bars. . .a primary purpose of this is oxygenation. It's not necessary, but does increase growth rates and prevent the mats from forming. If you have a surface mat, it might explain halted growth. Good luck with it!

Actually, that kid didn't have a surface mat, but he did have a cloudiness of the water, maybe that's related to bacterial contamination. That kid just started some jars that he boiled for 20 minutes, that should get rid of most contams. That kid also noticed the color of the water was a milky color, not amber like when honey is present. That probably means that all the honey was metabolized into other waste products. I'll tell you how it goes, thx for help.
