Is social anxiety or general anxiety a chemical imbalance by itself, one one triggerd by external...
    #15832864 -

...triggers?

I belive one can be prone to depression and if certain "triggers" are pulled (having no friends, losing a loved one, ect...) then it causes the chemicals in your brain to change somehow and you get depressed?

Is anxiety the same way? I'm trying to get to the root of mine but I just can't really think of a cause other than i'm really really short for my age/gender (5'3, 20, male)

I'm not sure... I think the "chemical imbalance" philosophy makes sense but there's no way to prove it as of yet.  I've had anxiety issues my whole life, nothing specific triggered it.  I can still make friends, work and whatnot, it just seems to take work to maintain than it does for "normal" people.

I've also had things happen that send me into worsened states of depression/anxiety.  For example, I knew someone who committed suicide.  This brought up a lot of feelings, but I was able to sort through them and get back to my regular anxious state.  I've never been able to break this "regular" anxiety however, despite the fact that I live a very healthy lifestyle and have been in intensive therapy sessions throughout my life.  I work hard to maintain but I can't seem to get on top of it, which leads me to believe it is the chemical imbalance concept.  It's too bad we don't know how it's caused or how to correct it.  I know my life would be much, much better if it were possible.

i think even when your in an anxious situationa and you reason with youself and realize there's nothing to be anxious over, you still have to deal with the physical symptoms of feeling anxious (your adrenaline flows, your breathing is shallow, ect) which makes us "feel" like there's something wrong...

I think the key is re-learning not to get so anxious in the first place

I've been there and come back after much difficulty, and have concluded these issues come from asking these questions.

Sorry if this is too simple an explanation, but less questioning and more doing will fix most (all?) of your problems.

I think I developed social anxiety from spending ages 14-24 completely tanked on alcohol and other drugs to loosen me up around people, and now that I don't want to be constantly wasted, I have a hard time interacting with people while I'm sober.

The worst is at work when all our phones go silent, and everyone gets up and socializes, so I'm standing in a group 8-12 people who I share very little in common with trying to carry on a conversation.

It's hard to overcome and a pretty overwhelming, once some people go home and there's less people I open up and can interact really with the people my age, but otherwise I clam up and not sure how to really over come it.

I know I just need practice and all that, but in the mean time, it sucks :frown:

anxiety is purely psychological... eating badly or treating your body badly in general can set you up but anxiety is all in the head.  you have the wrong or negative things going on about yourself in your head.  you think what do they think about me? will they like me? what if they don't like me? or anyone of a possible million other issues people have regarding themselves and this is completely beatable...

there's a website that's all about a simple form of therapy called the linden method... it's been widely and successfully used in Europe, primarily Germany and the UK... when you visit their website you'll notice many of their testimonials are from psychologists who have implemented the program in their practice with huge success...  i've never used it personally but i know many who have and they swear by it.  the system is so effective it can help people beat depersonalization and derealization and if you know anything about these two super high anxiety states you'll have a good idea just how effective this system is...

it comes with a full one year money back guarantee and they have a small staff of psychologists and well trained counselors available to answer any question you may have in order to effectively implement it.  go to the website, look at the testimonial videos....  see if you can relate to any of the stories of those who were cured... social anxiety is one of the easiest psychological frames of mind this program treats. people with PTSD, OCD, DP and DR, agoraphobia to name a few on top of general and social anxiety...  what do you have to lose with a full one year money back promise?

As far as I've read, no one has a clue what "chemical imbalance" even means because there is no baseline.  It's all big pharma marketing language.  I agree with Cateyes with his general sentiment that it's all psychological in that it's all a manifestation of your neurological and physical framework so eating healthy and doing healthy things like exercising will, in general, make you feel more optimal

However, understanding this framework is currently well beyond our understanding even though psychologists claim different.  Read some psychology textbooks sometime; they will make you lol.  I would hardly call it a "science."  Anxiety is probably to some extent genetic and is modulated by a variety of factors--some claim, even your mother's temperament when you are in the womb.

my social anxiety stemmed from insecurity and lack of confidence. now that i feel good about myself and feel like i actually have something to offer people i even enjoy being in social situations that i would have avoided in the past. It was purely psychological in my case.

i agree with you to the great extent that psychology and especially psychiatry is seriously flawed but there are branches of psychology that are right on target and i know from personal experience.  i spent almost 7 years in CBT under 5 psychologists who all had the same approach which was to change behavior in stead of understanding the role of the subconscious in my problem that was primarily 4 significant underlying physical conditions.  5 probably because i honestly believe in retrospect i had candida but the changes i made before meeting my two new MD's i may have healed myself of a serious case of candida....

i met a young psychologist who practices Somatic psychology and in less then three months my life was completely turned around because she first took the steps in explaining to me the role my subconscious was playing in all of this and taught me a simple technique to address each and every one of my personal issues.  once i had altered the way i looked at the world it opened up a door i never knew exited...  somatic psychology recognizes there is a significant connection between the mind and body but even more importantly they recognize there is a deep connection between body and mind...  somatic psychology accepts you as you are where CBT is on a mission to mold you into something you may have never at any one point in your life been able to relate with whatsoever...

just one example....  i've always had an "unusual" spiritual perspective and 4 out of 5 of the CBTer's went out of their way to constantly tell me things like "Kensho, you do realize this makes no sense in a number of ways....  how does this fit into the social model?" and I'd ask....  "i'm not sure what you're talking about..." and she or more often then not not, he would say  "this is something I'd like you to try to work out on your own until the next time we meet...  do you bring your co-pay with you this time?  where my Somatic said  "this is so cool!!! i have never even given this any thought!!! but i can see exactly what you're saying and where you're coming from and fully understand how it all relates!!! there's real beauty in this Kensho...  when did you adopt these feelings?" or some shit like that and actually mean it because she could relate to what it was i was putting out there...  this was in relation to my perspectives regarding my spiritual path... where i was at that point in life... a very famous somatic pioneer is Peter A Levine who wrote this book...

Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma: The Innate Capacity to Transform Overwhelming Experiences

i've never had an experience that even came close to something that could bring on the serious anxiety state of PTSD but i've read hundreds of books in my life and out of all of them this one is easily within my top ten and like the linden method it teaches the individual how to wrap their head around the physical symptoms and psychological nature of severe anxiety and gives you tools to completely arrest the situation...  anxiety per se isn't genetic, at least it isn't from my perspective as i have a lot of respect for you.  it's a self taught, imbedded idea about oneself that has absolutely no real validity to it in the great majority of cases...  yes, there are instances where someone suffers anxiety when there is substance like having a physical birth defect for instance and it trips you over due to all the beautiful Hollywood attitude.  but even then there is no real basis in feeling insecure about your self.  it's when you have that first real negative situation where someone just stares or if they're really fucked in the head make a comment that an eternal seed is planted.  in CBT they hack at the base where in somatic they prune the tree of all it's ugliness if it's even possible for a tree to be ugly in the first place.  as perfect as we'd like to believe we are in many ways, we are perfect or perceive perfection based on the subconscious model.

i've been so impressed by somatic to such a high degree my wife would tell you if i didn't have a nuclear family and i was in the position i am now in life I'd never have returned to my old job but instead gone to school and study somatic psychology... every single class i took would be with the sole intention of practicing nothing but somatic's...  there is a genetic component to many serious psychiatric conditions but the mental health MYTH, its model and it's approach is perverse to say the least.  in my case as is in too many others i reached a point in age where a genetic predisposition expressed itself late in life and because i had so many other physical problems that went undetected for god knows how long it allowed this gene expression to trip me over... believe it or not i was told if i were in optimal health i would have never developed psychiatric pathology...  just like in cancer, genes are a very small part of the picture in cancer...  inflammation is the dominant driver and once it reaches a certain point whatever your genetic instruction is that is what you're going to develop...

i don't know, maybe you're right and i'm sorry for the rant post but through my own personal experience and those i know who once suffered the thing with anxiety especially has always been bad self image and negative chatter...

as far as my anxiety goes, I think I just need to stop being such a pussy. What I mean is that everyone gets nervous, I've just been letting my nervousness get the better of me. I need to man up and do what I wanna do because I know I can do it. I just need to utilize my confidence.

After a while the petty things that made me nervous should stop making me feel so nervous once I get used to them.

Since i've adopted this attitude last week i'm already speaking up in class more with ease...i feel alot better already...there's nothing wrong with me I just gatta man up.

You can't beat anxiety by reading about it or thinking through it.

i would say triggered by external things, which i'm sure is reflected in brain chemistry as everything affects the brain (including your own thoughts).

also here's a fascinating book

The Brain That Changes Itself

"Norman Doidge, M.D., traveled the country to meet both the brilliant scientists championing neuroplasticity and the people whose lives they’ve transformed—people whose mental limitations or brain damage were seen as unalterable. We see a woman born with half a brain that rewired itself to work as a whole, blind people who learn to see, learning disorders cured, IQs raised, aging brains rejuvenated, stroke patients learning to speak, children with cerebral palsy learning to move with more grace, depression and anxiety disorders successfully treated, and lifelong character traits changed. Using these marvelous stories to probe mysteries of the body, emotion, love, sex, culture, and education, Dr. Doidge has written an immensely moving, inspiring book that will permanently alter the way we look at our brains, human nature, and human potential."

agreed. and even then, you can't completely blame it on genes as your genes are constantly being turned on and off in response to the environment

I don't get how anyone can honestly say that the "chemical imbalance" concept is a myth.  Yes, it may be getting abused in order to push pills but everyone's trying to sell something, even those who have more "natural" methods.  It's up to the individual to decide what works for them, and it's up to the individual to accept that something not working for them doesn't mean it's a hoax and doesn't work for others.  Medication doesn't work for me, but I know a guy whose life pretty much did a 180 when he started taking anxiety meds.  It made my life shit, but it gave him an honest chance.

just because the anxiety meds help, doesn't mean it's needed to get better though yes it does help many people.

what the meds do is increase serotonin levels, but that doesn't mean the cause of depression is low serotonin levels, it just means boosting the amount helps, though it also usually includes many unwanted side effects.

an analogy ive heard in relation to antidepressants that makes sense is aspirin helps headaches, but that doesn't mean the cause of headaches is a lack of aspirin.

The familial aggregation of all of the major subtypes of anxiety disorders has been well established (21). As reviewed below, the results of more than a dozen controlled family studies of probands with specific subtypes of anxiety disorders converge in demonstrating a 3- to 5-fold increased risk of anxiety disorders among first-degree relatives of affected probands compared to controls.  The importance of the role of genetic factors in the familial clustering of anxiety has been demonstrated by numerous twin studies of anxiety symptoms and disorders (22,23). However, the relatively moderate magnitude of heritability also strongly implicates environmental etiologic factors. Table 61.2 summarizes the results of family and twin studies of anxiety disorders.

As with most psychological abnormalities, it appears that in many cases, genetic predispositions combined with external stimuli lead to anxiety.

Great anology bigmike.  Completely agree!

Looks like a cool book Kenso.  It appears that the first 70 pages or so are on google books so I'll check it out to see if I dig it.  Thanks for the recommendation.

@Jimboob -->  I would agree that you do have to just get out there and do it to get over it.  Reading about it will show you the door but you have to walk through it.  I am not familiar with how well behavioral therapy works for generalized anxiety but for particular "phobia" type anxieties, I know exposure to the anxiety-provoking stimulus is a common and typically effective treatment.

i don't see how they can say that the chemical imbalance theory has any valid truth to it at all.. have you ever read the pamphlet that comes with the medication? you know the one when you finally unravel it and consider the size of the print it reads like a small novel? well look under action of this drug or how this drug works or what ever the drug company chooses to hide the reality of the medication and every single one of them will say something like "it is believed that dopamine plays a role in schizophrenia" it is believed? BELIEVED????

it should say "research clearly demonstrated that there is a chemical imbalance of the brain involving dopamine" but instead it'll say it is believed that dopamine plays a role in schizophrenia... and in the case for depression it'll say "it is believed that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance of low serotonin" because there is no blood test and there never will be a blood test... you would think that if a person with low serotonin were given 200-300mg's of 5-htp their serotonin levels would immediately rise since 5-htp is a direct precursor to serotonin but instead many go without relief...  yes, in some people it does work but if this is the case why not give the patient a harmless amino acid the body makes in place of paxil or prozac...

and as far as anxiety being a heredity disorder i don't by it sorry... they can do all the fucking studies they'd like but anxiety is a psychological thingie...  there may be a hereditary issues regarding food sensitivities which set the person up for tripping over due to anxiety but anxiety is a reaction to a thought that generally has no basis or stress, but you can believe what you'd like to believe but answer just one question if you will....  why are programs like the linden method which teaches neuroplasticity working for hundreds of thousands...  why is merely thinking differently working for so many people if it is purely genetics?  neuroplasticity is the new or relatively new buzz word for subconscious reprogramming, who knows what it'll be called ten years from now... but it really won't matter because it'll be the same shit doing it's job at healing people...  i'm just saying based on my own experience and then learning about others afterwords...
