Music Scene
    #1555044 - 05/16/03 08:48 PM (20 years, 10 months ago)

Ive been wondering, how did the music scene get to be where it is right now?
in the 19th century everything seems to have been either classical or folk, and then jazz swept in..

From that, rock and rap emerged. Heavy metal has deep roots in black sabbath and led zeppelin. Punk seems to have come from the Kinks, and pure Rock has continued from tom petty and such.. but it seems to have died down heavily. Progressive was rock pioneered by King Crimson

Disco seems to have led to both techno and the type of pop we have right now.. ABBA comes to mind as good pioneer group for that..

Country came from... elvis and America?..

Where did all the other stuff come from?
Did Latino music spontaneously burst out of the countries it originated from? why? What about mainstream rock like three doors down?

Why wasn't this nearly the case 100, or even 50 years ago?
Strange how classical music is basically a novelty now...

it just seems like it all branched out like this:

I believe Country and Blues existed back then too, as well as Ragtime and all sorts of ethnic music.

I don't know what you mean by "pure rock" but ok...

It came from traditional Southern folk music, both Appalachian and blues, and has been around much longer than Elvis.

It originated from traditional Spanish music.

Lots of different kinds of rock fall into the category of "mainstream rock." In the case of Three Doors Down, their style comes from both 60's psychadelia and 90's alternative.

Ah, but it was. There have always been different types of ethnic music. It just didn't recieve the kind of universal exposure that we see now, since there was no radio back then. Also, most of it wasn't written down like Classical music is.

Maybe to you, but most college music departments take it more seriously than any other type of music.

What if everything around you
Isn't quite as it seems?
What if all the world you think you know,
Is an elaborate dream?
And if you look at your reflection,
Is it all you want it to be?

You're gonna have to be a little more specific than that

By the looks of his post he is trying to whore up our peaceful little Pub with one liners. He had half a page of post bumped up and I've already written more in this single post than he did in a dozen.

My theory on some of the electronica scene:

New Wave ------>( turned into) Ravers
Disco --------> Club

All modern music (western music at least) is in someway derived from classical, blues, and folk styles.

As for techno, it definitely has it's roots in the disco scene, but also from bands like Kraftwerk in Germany in the early 70's. The disco scene gave us clubs like The Warehouse (which spawned House music) and The Garage (which spawned Garage music). Kraftwerk were very instrumental in pioneering the completely electronic sound and taking the funkiness out of the music. They really paved the way for Techno as a genre, whereas the disco clubs paved the way for techno as a catch all genre, encompassing house, garage, techno, etc.
