Who here practices martial arts?
    #15624477 -

I'm seriously considering joining a local Karate class in order to build on my self confidence/discipline and to be able to defend myself in a proper manner.

I'm just wondering if any members of this forum ever went to any martial arts classes and if so, what was it that you did? Also, have you ever had to use any of the techniques that you acquired in any real life situations?

I've done martial arts since I was like 7, on and off. Started with a year or two of karate, then I moved. Tae Kwon Do, but the instructors were bullyish assholes that dug their own grave, and eventually had to stop the classes, even after downgrading to a practice area 25% of the size of their original building. A year or so later I started at this guy, who never taught before, but was pretty epic. He looks like a body builder, but he's not some asshole that goes around breaking little kids arms to show off. Generally awesome guy, I stuck around for a long while, like purple belt I think? I was a year or a year and a half away from a brown belt, (still am), but I got kinda lazy. /quit

:ahahaha:

Definitly worth doing, though. If you are dedicated, go 2 or 3 times a week, practice on your own time, bla blah blah... you can kick almost anybodies ass. Not to say you should go around taking names, that will probably land you in the hospital. Don't think you can take on 6 guys until you are a 4th degree black belt or so... at which point you probably can.

But believe me, if everybody knew how to bring there foot 4 feet up, into somebodies face in half a second, the world would be less violent. A little practice with martial arts is almost always worth it. Oh, and sparring is worth doing, it's the best practice for being ready in a fight.

I do not practice martial arts, I've perfected it :brucelee:

I've learned kung fu, not in classes by through individual instruction and I
have used what I've learned in real life, in fact it prevented me from
hurting anyone on many occasions, I even had a cop inform me that he'd shoot
me if I ever resisted arrest after he saw me break up a fight that resulted
in him getting his ass kicked

I knew a black belt with all kinds of trophies and shit from Tae Kwon Do, he
and 4 of his friends were going to jump me, they held back and he let fly
with everything he had, 4 good punches and some flying roundhouse shit kick
and not one of them phased me. it was like being punched by a 5 year old. all
those years, all those trophies... his friends decided not to jump

that black belt got his ass handed to him buy a tubby guy with no fight
training a few months later, we call him chicken man, the tubby guy. dude
started bullying chicken man and a few of us were going to stop the shit
when chicken man lit into him, got him on the ground and fucked his little
world up, it all started with an attempted kick to the head, chicken man
scooped under the leg and drove him down... you could hear his mellon
thump when it his the concrete

in high school i use to train in ju-jitsu. best thing i ever did. cool thing is, i was a bad ass before the classes. my parents thought it would help me with control. WRONG! i turned into a straight douche until i was jumped by 3 old guys for fucking up their younger brother, he was my age.

thats when i learned self control.

if i had the time and money i would def start training again.

My senior year of high school one of the girls in my class got pulled over for her blinker not working. We told her that the reason it wasn't working was because she ran out of blinker fluid. The next day she came to school and goes "You guys are fucking assholes, I went to Autozone and asked for blinker fluid and they laughed at me and asked WTF I was talking about. - Gumby

Took part in MMA for 4 years, won a few fights, lost a few fights.  It changed me into the person i am today, more disaplined and respectful.

If i was going to pic one type of martial art to practice it would be Muai Thai!

Its pure devistation to your opponent! So if your looking to destroy someone and become a better human in the mean time. Take it up!
