Morality/Ethics
    #15587384 -

Read an article by Peter Hitchens who is a christian, quite the contrast from his Anti-Theist brother. But anywho, do you believe morality is "set" and that there are universal wrongs that we should abide by. Do you believe that spirituality and religion play a role in defining what is wrong and what is right?

If Religion was to disappear would you be okay with a moral code completely different from the one we have today, something like "survival of the fittest"

Discuss

Edit: Sorry, if it's jumbled my sentence structure and grammar are pretty poor and I'm busy. I hope I got the general message of what I was trying to convey across.

It appears that sentence structure has already disappeared.

Euthyphro dilemma: Is what is morally good commanded by God because it is morally good, or is it morally good because it is commanded by God?

If morality were set then there would be no grey areas.  Can you find any? I can. If you are at war, and you kill a guy because he was trying to kill you then you are morally justified.  At the same time, he is as well because you were trying to kill him.

Bastard children are the product of adultery, and fornication, according to many religions.  Many bastard children have contributed to society greatly.  Were their parents then morally justified in their actions?  Perhaps.

We can find more I am sure.

It is too grey of an area, involving too much subjectivity to be something that is "set in stone" somewhere, so to speak.  Morality is subjective, because only a mind can decide whether something is good or bad. Good or bad is an opinion, not fact.  Objects in and of themselves contain no meaning - none that the mind is not capable of imposing upon them.

I am also sort of surprised that you think that if religion were to be eliminated that we could not be altruistic.  That is a very skewed view of reality.  In nature, nothing has religion but us yet you see altruism all the time.  Also, religion is what is causing us to fight wars against each other as we speak.  How can you reconcile that with this idea that religion keeps us morally inline?

I never said that it was set in stone, and I never said that religion was the standard of Morals.

"Another favourite argument of the irreligious is that conflicts fought in the name of religion are necessarily conflicts about religion. By saying this they hope to establish that religion is of itself a cause of conflict. This is a crude factual misunderstanding. The only general lesson that can be drawn is that Man is inclined to make war on Man when he thinks it will gain him power, wealth or land." - Peter Hitchens

It's a hypothetical question, and personally I don't think that our culture even now is all that altruistic. I meet more and more people everyday who actually live by a motto similar to "survival of the fittest".

I'm just curious as to what you all think.

ok, and I just told you.  ??

Here is you from first post: "But anywho, do you believe morality is "set" and that there are universal wrongs that we should abide by."

I assumed you were a theist, I also assumed you thought that morality was given by God.  If I am wrong in my assumption don't accuse me of attacking you -  just clarify.  you asked for a discussion so I just say "you" to be less formal.  If you really wish to discuss a topic like this, there are going to be issues with communication if you think that ideas are a personal attack.  They are not.

Is this really a discussion or are we just throwing shit?

Also let's not attack straw men, or have ad hominem arguments.  I am not a theist, but that doesn't mean that I can't think or that I am automatically immoral.  Peter Hitchens is simply wrong that religion in and of itself is not a cause of conflict.  Look at Islam, and your logic is destroyed.  Islam is a repressive, war based religion and if you don't believe it you should read the Koran.

There is a reason why Christopher is better known.  God is Not Great should be read by everyone who is interested in religion and the conflict surrounding it.

I was trying to clarify, sorry if It got jumbled. I never assumed anything you said was an attack. I was hoping multiple people would get involved and start throwing around ideas, but alas I hoped for too much.
Personally, I don't think morality is subjective, not necessarily because I am a theist but because if a moral code can be changed it is not a code at all, and if we have no code to live by we can do w/e it is we please. Sometimes the majority's view is disgusting and vile, I forgot what article it was did a survey but they asked something like 10k men if they would rape a women given the chance, and given that there would be no repercussions. Something like 53% said they would go through with it.

I was quoting, I think it is a good quote in a sense. I do think that often wars are fought in the name of religion because that is the way you would garner most support. The sheep minded will follow w/o questioning, I think it's most often a front. I agree though, Islam is repressive.

Also Peter was referring to wars based off the Christian ideology based on the context it was in, if I'm not mistaken.

Give an example of objective morality.  Give me a hard moral decision that has a clear solution and I could entertain the idea of objective morality.  I can't see objective morality because all I see are minds interpreting data as best as they know how.  I don't see any clear set of rules or laws governing man's actions.  I see laws of nature, but they are indifferent to morality.

Religion isn't going to stop those men.  Hell, the bible tells the Jews to have their way with the Canaanites when Joshua goes on his circumcision raid.  If anything the religious ones will do the bad deed and then go to be "forgiven".  Catholics priests, perfect example.

Thanks for clearing that up   It gets heated sometimes in these types of discussions but really I am not meaning to get under anyones skin.  I just enjoy philosophy.

There is no hard question that has an easy decision to make, but I do believe the right decision is not necessarily the easiest one.

I think there was a movie recently that came out it bunked bad, but anyways it was a dude who came to your door. He gave you the option of a million dollars if you pressed the button, the catch, is that when you press the button somewhere someone in the world dies.

Which would you choose?

I'd pass, but in todays day and age when money is so tight and people chase after it so fervently this isn't such an easy question.

I don't live by the OT in the slightest, you can't pick and choose from it; if you do, good luck justifying it. I'm one of the few Christians that has no problems with homosexuality...

I live by the NT, which is pretty liberal and all about peace and yada yada...

Yeah the movie was from an old twilight zone episode - the black box or something like that.  With Cameron Diaz and that old freaky guy?  Richard Kelly directed it, the director of Donnie Darko.

I wouldn't push the button either.  I think that a lot of people wouldn't, but most probably would.  That just says something about where we came from - the wild.  Man, our ancestors used to have to kill shit all the time just to make it.  They had to fight each other or be killed by the other guys, it was a rough time.  I don't think that we are all bad because of that.

Donnie darko FTW

So, Does morality evolve with us as a society and as a people? Part of the reason I asked if you would be okay with a moral code that is extremely dark. I mean honestly, a survival of the fittest code would probably create a society of more intelligent and more successful people while the weak, the poor, and the simple get left behind.

Me being the person I am, I would hate to see that happen and would probably become a hermit and keep to myself honestly.

hmmm I'm not sure.  Maybe, but it certainly doesn't seem like it does.

A moral code that is simple is good with me.  Like do whatever you want as long as you don't hurt anyone else.  But like all moral codes it is not enforceable.

I just think that really, while we might think we have everything figured out it really won't matter if shit hits the fan.  Morals are great and all, but survival will be all that matters if the delicate balance of the world is upset enough to make resources scarce.

I would become a hermit too lol

Give an example of objective morality.

i will not be so blind as to claim my subjective view of morality is gospel but we must at least entertain some thought experiments in order to gain a full view of morality.

if you want to find something like an objective morality then walk into your neighbors house and try to rape his child in front of him. obviously i do not want you to do that but lets entertain another idea. go to the north pole and try to rape a polar bear cub in front of it's mother. what i'm getting at here is that there seems to be some common taboo's among many mammals. these taboo's are not set in stone but nothing really is. to ask for objective morality is to ask too much.

many people who claim they have no morals (i'm not saying you have no morals) will actually act as if they do have morals. this is crucial. it's not really what we say we believe as much as it is how we behave which shows our moral character. i do not believe there is objective morality but i do believe in morality itself.

the true problem is not one of "do we or do we not have morals?". the real problem is what these morals lead to. often those who are most outspoken on a topic such as freedom are actually the biggest threat to freedom. like the cia agent who tortures people in order to defend his countries freedom.

morality can often lead to moral purism which is a great threat to genuine morality. by claiming moral purity one can justify anything. also when the moral purist finds that he/she is not as moral as they had once thought they will blame someone else because their purity is unquestionable. morality is a sticky subject. in many ways morality is the moral problem. good people do bad things because it's moral. ideology plays a crucial role in this. being moral is not about what someone says but about what is not said. it is the underlying ideology which pushes for immoral morality. for example: a nazi may have thought it more moral to gas jews rather than shoot them. the problem is that ideology pigeon holes morality until there is nothing moral that can be done. this is true evil.

I don't agree. A changed moral code is still a moral code. If the purpose of the code is still served after it has been changed, then it's not correct to say it's equivalent to having no code at all.

Compare with other codified rules. Changing a rule is not equivalent to having no rule at all. Countries that have switched from driving on the left to driving on the right can confirm that this is true.

Morality is relative. What is right for the lion is not right for the zebra, because the lion and the zebra generally don't share the same purpose when they go about their daily business. That doesn't mean that no shared purposes exist, just that morality is always relative to some purpose. I don't know if there are purposes that are shared by all creatures, but if there are then there might also exist some kind of universal moral rule. The scope of such a rule would however be limited to a particular shared purpose.

All Ideology?

it would be a bit presumptuous if i were to claim all ideology causes moral problems but i do believe that it is the human propensity to adopt ideologies which causes great problems as well as great works of art and empathy.

"good people do bad things because it's moral" elaborate further please.

i think i will use ernest beckers  definition of evil to illustrate my point here. this is a post i made a while ago: people create immortality symbols in order to deny death and localize evil in tangible objects, such as other people, in order to rid the world of evil and so, create evil in the process of upholding purity. purity should be a sin for the trouble it's caused mankind. the really sad part is you can't (at least i don't) blame people for the mountains of bodies they are required to stack up in order to contain their fears. it's really an impossible bind we find our self's in. a symbolic animal forced to contemplate it's own demise and yet capable of imagining a world of everlasting peace and prosperity. i can see why some turn to murder to satisfy their existential grief.

when a immortality symbol is threatened by an other, destroying them can easily be justified.

here is another post i made: the real problem is that good people do bad things by striving for purity and as purity is an unattainable ideal, people must isolate evil in a tangible object such as another human in order to rid the world of evil. (this is why morality can become immoral) morality itself is the culprit. something must come from outside any moral tradition in order to curb brutality and since we moralize our entire universe, this is unlikely to occur.

If a Moral code can be changed at a whim, how is it set in stone? If morals are not to be set in stone then what's the point of them at all. As a society a code which is firm is needed, if not anyone can do that which they please. This is what I meant, as to your analogy with the zebra and the lion we're all humans - we have different situations, and circumstances yes but we're all humans none the less.
I don't think  Moral code should be a 500 page document listing all the things we can't do to each other, honestly... to some extent I think the ten commandments are just fine. Excluding the ones about God, for the people who do not share a belief in him.
