Phlegm
    #15499631 -

I quit smoking cigs 4 months ago(after 10 years), yet i still wake up every morning gagging on phlegm.  Its not coming from my lungs, its more like a nasal drip thing.  I believe that may be the reason its impossible for me to fall asleep on my back.  I almost fall asleep than i wake up making a snoring/snorting sound unable to properly breathe through my nose.  Friends and family are trying to tell me im just clearing out all the "goo" from smoking for so long.  After doing some research on the subject, I dont believe its related to smoking as it happens to lots of non-smokers.

When i wake up in the morning i always have a nose full of snots/ all kinds of gross colors.  I then drink some water and go through my morning routine, shit shower shave.  I cough a little bit to clear my throat and i feel the snot in my nose/throat making me gag.  Its a fight to keep everything down, i force my tongue towards my throat to prevent anything from coming up.  Doesn't always work.  This is every morning.

Ive heard propping your head up a little bit is supposed to help everything drip down.  Doesn't seem to help much.  Does anyone know/experienced what im talking about?  Is there anything i can do to treat this issue?

Some folks with similar problems have mentioned candida being the cause. Which was funny because i read it as Canada at first:eek:

I also think i may have broken my nose in the past boxing..

It could be nasal drip from your sinuses and is probably caused by your smoking if it's blackish. The snoring is probably a loose soft palate, are you overweight? The stuff you cough up could also be from your lungs, you have cilia in your lungs and throat that move that stuff up, most the time you swallow it and aren't aware of it, but when you're sleeping it just builds above your esophagus. The smoke screws up a lot of shit, be sure that if you cough it up you spit it out, it contains carcinogens.

Now the most important part- GOOD JOB ON QUITTING! I know it's tough as shit, and I've been 2 years without a smoke until recently I puffed on a hookah and seven using a vaporizer/ecig, but nicotine free stuff mostly. Stay off the smoke man, it will fuck your body up so quick and it'll keep you down more than anything else. Keep on the quitters train!

I don't smoke cigs and I have similiar issues with my sinuses. If it is any color other than clear you could have chronic sinus infections or may be allergic to something such as mold. Mine are always worse when I wake and get better through the day. Try snorting some warm salt water before you go to bed, it helps clear out the goop and cleans any bacteria out that may be the cause of the problem. I know how bad this can be, hope you find out what's going on.

The colors are usually green/yellow, black less often.  I used a vaporizer humidifier at night a few times which seemed to help a little.  And ya im a little bit overweight.

"but when you're sleeping it just builds above your esophagus" -That makes sense.  Thats why its recommended to use an extra pillow to prop your head up.

Thanks man, quitting definitely wasnt easy.  The smell of people smoking still gets to me sometimes, makes me reminisce.  Never again!

I wouldnt doubt it being a sinus infection, especially considering some of the stupid (low grade) shit i was putting up my nose a few months ago.  (Im done with that shit too)  I have a neti pot, maybe i'l give it a try tonight and see if it helps in the morning.  Its only in the morning, during the day it gets better like you were saying.

it's funny that you mention candida... my sister inlaw had a serious case of it... she's here, in my home right now as i'm typing this... i asked her and she said she had mucus problems... is that the same as phlegm? i'm not sure really, but 7 days on diflucan cleared up her candida and the mucus problems disappeared... some people here talk about candida from time to time... i've heard it can cause alot of shit, but honestly i don't know much about it personally... i am going to search on it now though that this thread popped up... now i'm going to become a candida expert! why all of a sudden though? i mean after quitting smoking that is... i'm not saying you have candida though, i'm just passing along some information...

when i made major lifestyle changes i basically forced my body into a detox process and symptoms of it that lasted about 3 weeks... three of them were mucus in my sinuses, a constant drip down my throat and my nose ran like a deer through my woods... the mucus and runny nose were clear though, not discolored... i also couldn't blow the mucus out of my nose but was forced to suck air deeply through my nose and spit it out of my mouth... that used to gross my wife out if she was sitting on the deck with me but i couldn't help it and she learned to deal with it... and like i said, it all cleared up within 3 weeks... maybe you're detoxing in some way because cigarette smoking is a body pollutant as well as a lung killer and does effect the sinuses, even if you don't blow smoke out of your nose... maybe this will all blow over after awhile

could be a sinus infection since it's discolored...

i wish i had more for you...

First time hearing about it, i read it when researching my symptoms.  I asked my dad about it, he said he knew of someone who had it and it was bitch to get rid of.

I really dont think its the case for two reasons: 1)When i quit last year (for 2 months)I was pretty much completely clear, no wheezing, deep coughing after the third week.

Quote:

2) It really wasnt all of a sudden.  A month before i quit smoking I was hacking so bad in the mornings that i would gag and/or throw up, even before smoking my first cig of the day.  I would cough so hard that i was quickly gasping for air so i could violently cough again.  I think that quick gasping for air would make me sometimes swallow air.  I say that because Id get this feeling like a burp was coming up my throat and that if i didnt try to keep it down, the contents of my stomach would be on the floor.  If i was smoking a cigarette in the morning and a gagging fit happened i for sure was going to throw up.  I quit because that began happening every morning with my first cigarette.

Now four months cig free, i dont cough like i did before in the least bit.

Now I start gagging when i try to do the haaack spit thing to clear the mucous out of the back of my nose/ throat in the morning.  No fun at all.

Just wait til you're a year clear, you'll be disgusted by the smell of smokes for sure. Your body is not longer being suppressed by the smoke. Remember, when we go camping we don't stand right in the smoke of the fire cuz its an irritant, but it's cool to suck it in 10-20 times a day lol. Your sinuses are repairing, and the inflammation may be goin down, your body is clearing out tar, and any infection gets a shot.

If symptoms don't clear in a week go to a doc. Green/yellow/brown are a sign of infection, but a neti pot should help a lot.
