Coughing up black phlegm

I wasn't too sure what I should do about this so I thought that I would post here and see what you all thought.

I recently stopped smoking cannabis and cigarette's. My cannabis use was pretty heavy and consistent, I smoked fifteen to twenty bowls a day for about a year and a half. On top of that I would have about three cigarettes, and although it isn't much it's still something of negligible value. Anyway ever since I stopped I've been coughing up large chunks of phlegm streaked with this black stuff that is probably tar but yeah I can't be certain.

What is this? Has anyone had anything similar happen to them? Is there anything I can do to increase the rate at which I expel this nasty shit or something that will help it dissipate?

I am drinking this herbal tea mix called "Breathe-Ezy" I bought from work and one of it's effects is to apparently increase mucous production so I think this might be the cause of it.

In any case I was and still am quite alarmed by what I am spitting out. It kind of makes me want to stop smoking weed altogether  :sad:

Don't worry, its just your lungs beginning to work properly again and expel all the tar build up. When you smoke, the little hairs in your lungs called cilia are paralyzed and are unable to clear any debris. When you stop smoking, the cilia begin working again, and your lungs start to clean themselves out. It could last a few weeks before you feel better and the phlegm stops being expelled.

Good effort on stopping! Just keep it up

Yeah it's probably your lungs expelling the nasty tar that was caking them.

Look up a herb called 'mullen' it should be up soon. Read about it buy some if yo have to. It will ease the symptoms and help you cough up all tha soot. Your boddy is on healing mode. Its just trying to purge the crap out of your lungs. Smoking numbs the lungs even though it irritating them it sedates themso you dont feel irritation. When you stop your lungs notice that you got this shmuk covering your insides and its time for spring cleaning, though you might try the mullen and you smoke it also it makes you cough for a few days, but its part of the healing process, black stuff out of lungs is better then in your lungs.

Some people round here are smoking 60+ bowls a day. When I was at
my peak of toking I used to rip 40-50 a day!

We usually bought an eighth a day to satisfy this habit! I remember some lads I met in college ripped an ounze in about 8 hours, one of them was hangin. Just sat there droolin!

I feel my lungs are fucked but many of my 60+ friends *claim* to be OK.

Yeah mullein (I think that's what it's called) is one of the components of the mix along with elderflower and a few other things. It tastes like complete shit but if it's helping, I can deal with it.

Did you say something about actually smoking the mullein? Sorry, I just got a little confused by what you said.

Yes get the leaf, add a pinch of lavender to it and maybe some mint or a tiny bit of sage. and pack the pipe.

I too cough up black tarry substances, its the downside of smoking so much.

Jesus christ! I enjoy smoking weed every now and then, but how the hell do people go through an 1/8 a day?  I remember days my freshman year where we could spread a gram out over several nights.  I don't know if it's the price of weed, or whether you people grow - know growers that are able to get so much.  I live in a college town, and people call it a deal for ten dollars off the "typical standard price for an 1/8th" (Trying to avoid giving "street prices" :wink:)

Anyways, glad you quit smoking cigs, it might take a while but you and your lungs will thank you later.  Everyone else, try and learn how to enjoy smoking without having to do so much, your lungs and wallets will thank ya  :thumbup:

PS I have nothing against people that smoke 60+ bowls a day

I'm glad I quit too. I suppose my only saving grace was that I only smoked after a session and that was to add depth to the shitty buzz I got from tolerance. Now that I've quit and hopefully lowered my tolerance I won't have to rely on them anymore :laugh:

I think Shroomie meant between a few people biglo, but even still that is alot of weed. I used to go through an ounce every two weeks so with a bit of elementary maths that works out to be 2 grams a day. I don't know how big your American bowls are but my conepiece would hold about two to three decent sized pinches.

Anyway getting back on topic, is there a level you can smoke at that will allow you to keep getting rid of this junk out of your system? What I mean is if I smoke a few times a fortnight will my 'cilia' still be paralyzed, causing me to not detox?

Heh exactly. I'll give it a few more weeks to lift the mental fog as well then I'll get back into the swing of things.

If you ever need an incentive to quit smoking, go to college. When I started I couldn't remember what the lecturers said ten seconds ago, now I'm up to twenty :wink:

There is far greater value in having clarity than there is having this leech attached to your mind sucking all that valuable juice up, that's all I can say.

Yeah I will, I don't see why my tea would be inhibiting mucous when it claims to do the complete opposite. I'll load some of the mix into my pipe tonight and see how that goes, at this point anything is worth trying.
