Cloning store bought agaricus?

I just started some clones of White button, and portabella on peroxidated agar, how should I have done it correctly?  :smirk:

What I did was tear open the stem, and scoop out a sterile chunk from within, and then did the same from within the cap. I ded a stem clone, and a cap clone of each.

What should/shouldn't I do now?

sounds good.
you probably should have done several plates though, as store bought mushrooms aren't always the freshest of specimens, and soemtimes aren't guick to start growing vegetatively.

Having worked in a Pizza joint before, I have extensive knowledge of fresh A. bisporus vs. non-fresh A. bisporus.

These did not turn pink when I cut them, which, generally, the freshest ones will, but they did appear to be fairly white.

I only had the four plates left out of my first batch. I'll be starting some more in reuseable wide mouth half pint jars next.

Cloning from the store? Could work, never have myself.
Sounds like you did it right, but I don't think the caps will give you growth.

Assuming it does work, all that's needed is a substrate, and the effort to make a mycelium solution. Good luck finding compost. I've read that A. Bisporus compost needs to be made either in a temp controlled room or in a HUGE pile outside. It's something about temps. within the pile, but I can't say I know exactly what I'm talking about. If you fail in obtaining it, just order a kit. They'll give you pre-colonized subtrate and casing material. It's still fun.

Right now I have some pasteurized straw/manure tea inoculated in the incubator. It's A. Bisporus.  Can't tell if it works yet, only been a day.  :smirk:

Best way to do it, is find your cities Indoor agriculture farm and get a culture off of them. Or you can ask for a freshly picked sample and take that and clone it.

as long sa you do get colonization on your plates you shouldn't be affected by the above problem.

Can agaricus be fruited off of cased grains?

What edible species can be grown entirely on cased grains?

You can expect thin, fast mycelium.Thats very white.


Mine are doing well on perrenial rye grass seed.
But to fruit i belive you need a bacterialy active casing layer.I could be wrong, i'll check tmc and post what it says in a bit.

TMC says :
This species fruits well on rye grain covered with an unsterilised peat based casing layer.


Spawn Medium Rye grain buffered with calcium carbonate and/ or calcium sulfate.

I cloned some shop  bought chestnut buttons to, and they have
a nice purple tint.Doesn?t really show well in this picture though.

I just cloned some wild picked Auricularia auricula(wood ears)
Which im pleased with as my last attempts(autum)failed.
These new ones are shooting of though.I think
they were to dormant in autum.

Yeah i do recommend it a  lot, theres a better more advance book by the same authors(i forget the name)but for the stage im at with this hobbie, this book is perfect :-)
The Mushroom Cultivator" was my best x-mas prezzie :cool:


But for now i've got a copy so just ask lol :tongue:

TMC is great, but i've yet to read GGMM [growing gourmet and medicinal mushrooms] so i can't compare except that GGMM seemed more in depth when i've browsed it.

You dog. I have had a bitch of time trying to clone A. auricula. I get some sort of nasty contam every single time. It give me trouble like nothing else.

with selective isolation proceedures you should be able to weed out the contams after several transfers.

Dam not again :-( seems sending whole petris is the wrong way to go.
Next time i'll try these ziplock baggies.My fault as others warned me about petris, and most of my missing posts have been petris :-(

r0c i also had a hard time in the autum, cloning wood ears.But this last lost
i picked fresh small ones, soaked in strong h2o2, and place whole on
peroxidated agar.Out of five ive done only one had contamed, with lipstick mould.
The otheres have all sent out growth simular to morels on agar.i.e fast thin strands.
The autum ones all contamed with variouse bacterial and fungal foes.

So feeling lucky with these, they shot onto the plates this time :-)

The same for me! :laugh: I failed at least 5 times! lol
They seem to pop up very suddenly but in fact they just inflate from a dried form. So the fruits that you're picking up have been exposed to contaminants for a long time.
Now I hope that I finally got it. I cut the branch they were growing on and noticed a white pattern of colonizing mycellium inside. I put few thin pieces of infected wood on agar and got something that looks like auricula myc described in GGMM. Mature culture should get brown spots and when I get them I'll be sure it's OK.
