I wouldn't see any reason not to put food coloring in the water if you think that will help. I didn't add anything to mine. I found that I could see the water line with a slight tilting of the terrarium. Then, when the terrarium is set back level, the line was more visible. (BTW, I have found so far that perlite is DEFINATELY the way to go...I have 3 terrariums set up, and the perlite container is showing the most promise.)

Alright, thanks PsilOwiz. I've heard alot of people say that about perlite, so I hope my begins to pick up a bit. I'm only getting about 92 percent humidity right now (8 hours after I put perlite and water in)..so I'm not sure if I did something wrong, or if it just takes awhile for it to get up.

actually, the food coloring could be beneficial. the light reflecting off of the bright white perlite (i have heard) can cause the fruits to grow in weird directions and come out looking weird. the food coloring is supposed to help dim the perlite so it won't confuse the fruits.------------------ I don't know what is real I can't touch what I feel And I hide behind the shield of my illousion

you really would be better off with no standing water at all. the perlite does not need it as it easily holds enough moisture to humidify for weeks without additional water. in addition, water breeds bacteria. also, any submerged perlite is ineffective. best to just rinse perlite in colander/sieve, drain off excess water and just add damp perlite to terrarium. ------------------ Visit http://www.drooldonkey.org Global Psychedelic Community, Forums & Chat, Teks & Tips.

yes, submerged perlite does pretty much nothing, but i'll have to disagree with not needing standing water. both me and my friend have had the same problem with this. we neglect it for a while, and as soon as there's no water down there, the humidity plumets. in my experience, you need standing water under the perlite in order to get good results.Link ------------------ How I wish that somewhere there existed an island for those who are wise and of good will. -Albert Einstein

agreed teyju, shrooms grow towards light, and the perlite is a very light color so the shrooms become confused with which way is up.
