Affirmative action, "cultural diversity," and African Americans

In higher education, it is often stated that allowing affirmative action for African Americans allows for more "cultural diversity" which benefits all students.  What exactly is the "cultural diversity" they offer?  I somewhat buy the claim that having minority groups in the class allows more sheltered majority race students to see the minority students as capable individuals; however, I do not see how this fits into the claim of "cultural diversity."  Thoughts?

I would think this is obvious. Affirmative action increases the diversity of the student body. It allows really dumb, really lazy, and very bad students to share classes with really smart, really motivated, and excellent students, thus maximizing diversity.

What could be wrong with that? :shrug:

I agree with your sentiment, but I can't really describe that as "cultural diversity"; perhaps it is "diversity" but it isn't "cultural."

Nice strawman. Affirmative action is generally put into play when deciding between two applicants whose credentials are nearly equal. And given that many minorities (especially blacks) have been systematically screwed over for decades, it only seems fair to offer them a way out of the cycle of poverty.
