Actually, it's more accurate to say that the Wendy's always has the help wanted sign up, not that they're always hiring. When I was in school, I used to apply all over the place, including the Wendy's that always had the sign up.

You know what they told me when I gave them my application? "Nothing open right now, but any day we'll call you". But since they get a few applications a day, when someone quits, the calls go out to the freshest applications not the ones who applied last week because they just want a warm body and don't want to waste a lot of time calling people who applied a week ago. The odds are better that the fresh applicants haven't found a job yet. And you can't go turn in an application every few days because they'll tell you to get lost. So it's actually a crap shoot if you'll get the next open Wendy's job (for which there are 50 applicants that week alone).

That and someone who's worked for 30 years is going to immediately file in the "overqualified" bin (read: the trash). No Wendy's manager wants to hire an engineer of 30 years who suddenly got laid off because they know he's gonna leave the moment he finds something better. And the more qualified you are, the fewer appropriate openings exist.

our high unemployment is a product of absolutely unrealistic expectations of compensation

Well, that I can't argue with.

Well, you gotta be a moron to put that on your application anyway.  I dont put my degree on my fast food applications.  Who would?

Then you agree that "you are to blame for not finding a job."

I think the 'overqualified' argument is generally weak, and doesn't apply much to fast food.  Those places dont even expect their high school workers to stay for more than 3 or 6 months.  I think most would jump to get an overqualified hard worker, if only for 3 months.

I agree that people think they're worth more than they are, not that they're necessarily to blame for their joblessness. At least not unless they're turning down jobs over a low wage, which I don't think is currently happening.

And that still leaves the issue of the guy with a mortgage and two kids who gets laid off from a professional job. Even if he was offered and took the Wendy's job, it's not going to pay his electric bill, let alone a mortgage even on a modest home.

Is he to blame when he's evicted, family and all? I don't buy that most people would willingly make their family destitute because they're lazy. Especially someone who has a long, satisfactory work history who's job was just outsourced to India.

There are only so many jobs available. When they're all filled and 6 million people are left over, it doesn't matter how hard a worker you are or what menial job you are willing to take because there are more applicants than openings. It's arithmetic. And I think it's naive (and seems to me mean-hearted) to summarily call them all lazy.

If you cant afford a mortgage, there are plenty of cheap and livable 1 bedroom apartments.  If you get outsourced to India, you are demanding far too high of a wage.  Sounds like a reality check to me, one should be glad they had access to so much wealth while they did - because globally speaking, they didn't 'deserve' it.

I think of the poor people I grew up around, mostly illegal immigrants from mexico.  They lived many to a house, had sporadic access to gainful employment but they always worked.  I think you know the difference.  They would cook, mend, create and work - they didn't just sit around and do nothing when no job was available.  Its so easy to live off of so little when you stop purchasing services and work and live together as a family.  That is the future of America, because it is sustainable.  The post war boom was not sustainable.  And even worse, the boomers spent all from the boom and then some.  So the reality check is coming... But it need not be disastrous, people and families around teh world make less money and spend less time on the job than Americans - and they often report as being just as if not more content.

Near me too.
I applied and  i know other people who applied and nobody really got a call back.
I'm also friends with a dude who just got hired there a couple weeks ago without even filling out an app because his older bro is smashin the fat manager chick.

Even if you can't get a job at Wendy's, there is no rule against setting up a burger tent on the side of the road. You would just have to treat it as a part-time job.. i.e learn the craft of grilling burgers, use a little business sense, and not go about it half-ass. I'd bet you could pull minimum wage fairly easy, no applications necessary.

Not to mention health department sanitation and equipment requirements, licensing, inspections, business permits, state business liability insurance requirements....

The US is not a third world country where people can cook road kill in an outdoor market and hang it up for sale on a clothes line.

It does appear to be rapidly heading there though, so maybe in a few years when we have goats and chickens walking the street it will make for a viable business after all.

So use pre-packaged meats, sanitary methods, and make a couple phone calls.. it really is not that unreasonable if you don't mind jumping through a couple hoops. Sure, it takes alot more effort than just joining a previous establishment, but if the previous establishment is telling you to go fuck yourself.. this is a good option IMO.

There are numerous BBQ and Spanish food tents operating exactly like this all over my town.. but then again, I have seen a chicken or two wandering our roads, and the dirty south often seems like a third world country lol.

My point was, if you are unhappy with the terms created by others, it's not impossible to take these matters into your own hands. Just takes a little creativity and effort, and in that lies our problem(IMo).

Granted, required liability insurance is bullshit(as are most civil suits imo), and probably has something to do with the hesitancy to create business.

Hell yes.

Though, I'd bet the manor in which we go about this work will change with technological advancement(i.e using a washing machine, power tools, food processors, etc..), but will still allow for a self-sustaining life style, especially if you were to invest in solar energy or something. But yeah, it's the principal of being independent(or at least knowing how) that is important for a sustainable life style, which modern suburbia is almost entirely without.

I'm gonna blame it on education, but not in the way you might think I will.

First though is the fact that most people, for whatever reason, prefer to do a job someone else has created for them. Just like they want some religion to explain for them the mystery of being, they want some company to spell out the structure and content of their day to day being.

That said the sheep are given guidance by other sheep (blind leading the blind). This is our education system. In my experience k-12 education said nothing about starting your own business. The reasoning given for learning what we were learning was that it was important 1. for an a priori value in knowledge and 2. because it would be necessary to get a job (get a job, not create a job).

In undergraduate education there was a split into these two categories. Art, English, history, etc were for the value of knowledge, while other degrees were to get a job. I went for the science degree and the science Phd and in graduate school i found nothing about creating your own thing, it was all about how to get a tenure track position or perhaps a job with some tech company, or if you wanted to go off the beaten path you could become some patent specialist working for a law firm or whoever they work for.

Re: Unemployment [Re: Freedom]

^Agreed. The education system in the US is pretty backwards. When I was in middle school, in 7th grade there were tech classes and wood shop and a culinary class. The following year they stopped all these classes completely state wide.

Don't get me wrong, I think English and Math are important for sure. But the three classes I stated above had a lot more real world value to them than most academic classes. And hell, they were fun.

We sit here in the US and wonder why our jobs are getting outsourced, quick to blame the companies. Why is India getting all the tech jobs? Because they actually go to school for it and know it a hundred times better than we do. Medical school? We're practically at the bottom of the list for a major superpower. Physicists? We don't have too many.

More and more, we allow people to come here for school to learn in these fields and they go back to their own countries with this knowledge and leave us in the dark. We have too many people going to school without clear minded goals.

Massive reform of the US educational system is needed. Core classes aren't shit when half the people graduating don't know how to apply that knowledge to anything.
