Unemployment
    #14954815 -

In a world of near infinite possibilities,
why are so many of us struggling to find something to do with our lives?
Is opportunity really that difficult to come by?
Or is the world at large suffering from creative deprivation?

Who is to blame here????

Unrealistic standards and expectations are to blame.  (IMO)

What standards are you referring to exactly?

Type of work and amount of compensation.

Imo the majority of paychecks received are a reflection of the effort and passion put forth in the work.

Anyways, is that not what unions are for?

id say it largely has to do with the size of the global economy. Advertising means that people are very unlikely to approach small businesses for new, experimental services.
How many jobs are there, really?

lots of service (which few people can feel passionate about), administration (same here), commerce, law, management, etc.

what does creativity even have to do with those jobs?

The american dream is long gone, this is not the climate where people can just start a business and make it big in the world. I mean of course you CAN do this but most people have no idea how they are meant to, since it involves modern business savvyness in a competitive world where many people know a lot more than you.

Too many god damned babies. That's what's to blame. In the US alone, we need to create 300K new jobs a month just to keep up with the flood of god damned babies. In other parts of the worlds where the idiots breed faster than rabbits, the problem is that much worse.

Case in point, Haiti:

Daraine Luton (The Gleaner) reports that, according to the United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA), Haiti’s birth rate has tripled since the January 2010 earthquake, from four per cent to 12 per cent.

On Wednesday’s launch of the World Population Report 2010, Igor Bosc, UNFPA representative to Haiti, told journalists that the increased rate of fertility in Haiti is of great concern and may translate into a crisis, underscoring the fact that the earthquake destroyed the vast majority of the health facilities in Port-au-Prince. Bosc also explained that there has been an increase in violence against women and that sexual behavior among Haitians now create the opportunity for increasing sexually transmitted infections, adding that “only 12 per cent of the population use condoms and the prevalence of HIV is likely to increase.”

Witchner Ormeus, Haiti’s director of youth and integration in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Civil Action, said urgent action is required to rescue Haiti: “The situation in Haiti has worsened since the earthquake. Family and community structures are breaking down and young people are very sexually active at an early age. We now have to intensify our campaign against HIV/AIDS and do more work in the area of family planning.” He stressed that parents do not have control over their teenage children in the tent cities, expressing concern that this could be devastating.

Gabriel Bedegian, Chief Technical Adviser on population development at UNFPA, said there has been a deliberate attempt by some countries to paint the Haitian man as a rapist and that the increase in fertility rate is best explained by people seeking to use sex for comfort after the catastrophe.

A friend of mine here usually would say after a quote like this, " the human race is doomed".  He's quite perceptive.

Agreed. Too many people and not enough creative leaders.

Quote:

Ok, so many of the current jobs available require little to no creativity.. but the creation of new jobs, by definition, requires creativity.

However, I don't think it is fair to blame the lack of job creation on the competitiveness of our economy, for there are business and project ideas out there that would have no competition, because they don't currently exist. Such as.. a moon mining mission, which would create thousands of jobs in trying to make such a mission possible, and would lead to potentially billions of dollars in resources, and more jobs.

This might sound kind of douchey lol, but I think one of the biggest problems is lack of scientific ambition and creativity in the majority, for these qualities have near infinite potential in job creation. Just my two cents.

@Icelander- Yes, I feel like most of the population will be facing their judgment day sooner or later, but I doubt humanity as whole is doomed. Just most of it lol.

Jobs are hard to find because in most cases, people who get the position know someone who is already working there.

What I think is going on in BC is all the European settlers that came here are now moving south to America to find new jobs and what not. That leaves the older population of 50-60 year old adults working at the job they desperately studied for at post-secondary to get, while watching their children move on to the US for schooling or already trained in the prefession they wanted, leaving a higher rate of senior citizens, and the homeless that will need to depending more on the working age group of 16-65 to help support the economy. That's why we have a huge population of Asians in Vancouver, by trying to draw in the young bucks of the eastern world to help load up the working age group so the Province, will aid our developed country. But as our medical system gets better, the seniors and homeless will need to rely on the "young bucks" in order to have a carefree lifestyle; so it's a tug-o-war between the east and the west.

Nope.  Unions are to insure that the lazy and passionless still get to keep their jobs and be overpaid.  People who put forth effort and passion don't need them.

That's such bullshit. I don't buy it for one second.

When the economy looses 100K jobs, 100K people looking for work will not find any no matter how hard they try until the economy puts back 100K jobs (plus a fudge for the additional god damned babies newly looking for work). It's simple arithmetic not laziness.

Plus I really doubt that someone who's worked constantly for 30 years then suddenly finds himself laid off with his family a month away from eviction and homelessness is a lazy fuck who doesn't want to work. And that describes a shit load of people in this country at the moment.

The Wendy's near my school is always hiring.  Always.

Anybody who has worked for 30 years and is still one month away from homelessness has serious problems.  The individual is to blame, our high unemployment is a product of absolutely unrealistic expectations of compensation and standard of living.
