m.leuthyi graft is separating from base rootplant.
    #14954217 -

hello gardeners , i noticed my leuthyi is starting to get too big and might be beginning to seperate itself from its rootstock.
should i do nothing and let it separate?
or do i have to heat a razor and slice?
i lent mt camera's to a mate who had his first child , so i can only show an old pic that doesn't show the problem.
:thanx:

Separation is an unfortunate reality with grafted plants due to pressure from the growing scion or weakening of the stock especially ones on shorter lived stock like Hylocereus.

If you're lucky and the separation is slow, the scion will push out aerial roots before it separates which makes rooting directly a breeze if you want to go that direction.

If you want to keep it as a graft, you'll need to re-graft preferably to a longer lived stock of your choice. I think one of the purposes of beveling vs. flat grafting is that a beveled graft takes much longer to disconnect due to scion/stock pressure, but I've never heard any one say it explicitly.

thanks naum, i might try doing nothing and let it slowly separate.
ive heard leuthyi can be a little difficult on its own roots , but im a graft virgin and the weather is probably too cold to try a graft at the moment anyhoo.

Keep an eye on it and it should be apparent when you need to graft. That's what I did earlier this year, but I tried to keep a bit on the stock to see if it would pup for me. No dice, connection was FUBAR'ed by that point. Re-grafted scion is alive and well though.
