Experimental sciences are taboo, ironic isnt it that science is supposed to be all about experimentation

Very unscientific to give up looking for new answers

Insult you? Are you kidding me? What do you call several pages of off-topic crap completely ignoring the few on-topic posts I and others have made in this thread to one off-hand joke?

Because in my book, THAT'S what's insulting.

Maybe if the OP bothered to comment on my posts in an intelligent way it wouldn't have railed.

Most of my posts were highly relevant and my first posts were very relevant. So I can't see why its insulting. I really was just answering questions....still OP didn't even comment once so I can't see why it would be anyways. If people aren't given a response, then why should they respect another opinion, when clearly this is not the case.

And yes when you are mocking one of my beliefs and categorizing someones line of thinking into a 'crazy conspiracy' this is much more insulting than my behaviour.

And if you really have a problem with this you should have intervened before hand instead of using to defend a pretty ignorant and insulting post.

I would disagree with your claim that there is no funding for research not resulting in profit.  For one: Alfa is incorrect in his claim that drugs not patentable aren't researched, as the current contents of a pharmacy will attest to (plenty of generics) and the fact that legal monopolies on unpatentable drugs are granted all the time and have been available for a long time (there's not ban on exclusivity periods or patents on naturally-produced drugs either- that's just not true).  For two: there are all sorts of sources of research on things that aren't profitable.

Plenty of people research things at their own expense that they are personally interested in.  Those that recieve funding likewise study these things: whether from buisness, non profits, or government grant. (like the sea cucumber example I used earlier- completely worthless yet government funded).  In fact, pretty much all the research done at universities is on things without financial prospects for the researcher or the grant-issuing institution.

The stuff I've done may have some commercial application at some point, but I'd never see a dime of it.  I like doing research on things that might be useful at some point, but there's no chance in hell I'd ever benefit, nor that the grant-issuers would.  In my case much of the funding comes from other research groups who want to analyze particular chemicals and I help get those chemicals to them.  The group analyzing them wouldn't even be doing anything patentable usually, and we just do it for the publishing abilities and the small profit we make (profit that doesn't even cover the exepnses of the operation).

Auto-Summary
This forum post revolves around a heated debate regarding the influence of funding on scientific research, particularly in the health sector. The original poster, AlphaFalfa, claims that certain biases in scientific investigations are affecting the validity of research, particularly in relation to alternative therapies and diets that could potentially replace pharmaceutical drugs. However, they fail to provide substantial evidence or specific arguments to support this claim, instead resorting to appeals to incredulity and personal anecdotes.

The key points of contention include:

1. **Lack of Evidence**: AlphaFalfa asserts that there is a mechanism preventing scientific investigations from being influenced by funding, yet they provide no studies or data to back this up.

2. **Irrelevant Points**: The poster accuses others of making irrelevant points, yet they themselves introduce unrelated discussions about oil companies and pharma-chemicals, which do not directly address the main claim.

3. **Burden of Proof**: AlphaFalfa argues that the burden of proof lies on the challenger of their claims, but they do not fulfill this obligation themselves, making their points hypocritical.

4. **Relevance of Arguments**: The poster questions the relevance of points made by others, such as those suggesting oil companies influence research, but fails to provide a coherent argument linking these points to their central

You've made a point that requires proof as well. How can you be so sure that scientific investigations surrounding health are not altered or intentionally neglected to the benefit of those who FUND it?  Why are you so sure and show me proof that there exists a mechanism that stops this from occuring.

How can the burden be on me only, if you are making a claim to this.

I do have some scientific evidence that the alteration of diets, supplements and even raw food diet seem to help/eliminate diseases that companies whom creating the drugs used to aid in controlling the effects of the diseases are not willing to investigate. I have experienced the effects of the diet through my own investigation and application. I am also not naive enough to believe that companies know nothing about these therapies because they are wealthy and powerful. Finally, I also highly suspect that they are trying to suppress this information due to the fact that these therapies cannot be patented and their spread controlled and profited from.

I am not naive enough to think that they would be willing to conduct scientific research that would eliminate any need for their products and bankrupt their own company.

I said there hasn't been science on important health science therapies and that this is probably done intentionally.

There are still mass producers of these drugs regardless of whether they are not patentable and most drugs that generate the largest amount of income for companies, is patentable. Once more you fail to answer the question nor withdraw your claim and instead speak of all sorts of extraneous things. What is it now, five times I've asked you to back up your claim that science is being harmed by the factors you claim and rendered incorrect/unreliable?  I guess its safe to say you don't even have an argument for this position, let alone any evidence it might be true.  That you fail to withdraw the claim or even address the point in good faith despite the many purported replies to these queries is annoying.

No, that was your straw man, I never claimed that.

"you too" is not a rebuttal.  That others are allegedly wrong on other matters has nothing to do with the sufficiency of your argument (or indeed, the failure of you to even provide one) on another point.

Secondly, I never said the things you ask me to prove, and I'm not inclined to discuss them since you appear to have refused many times to provide even an argument for the challenged point and I have no confidence you'll start.  In any case, unsupported/wrong data and conclusions are generally ignored if not published and greeted with caution if published in even a well-supported paper.  Incorrect/unsupported claims will be rejected in the normal course of the work in the field through inconsistant results being produced by the next research on that topic or attempt to replicate claims of sufficient importance.

The fact that universities generally own the federally-funded research patents, rather than the federal government granter or the researchers, See: Bahy-Dole Act, 35 U.S.C. § 200-212

Further, private research is generally owned by the buisness if federally-funded, Id., and essentially always owned by the buisness if privately funded per the employee's contract.

Re: 'Taboo' Science [Re: johnm214]
    #14770878 -

Auto-Summary
This forum post is a heated debate about scientific research suppression by companies. The author argues that companies intentionally suppress health-related research due to financial interests, citing historical instances of research distortion. They provide personal experiences and suspect mechanisms preventing such suppression, but lack concrete evidence or data. The author challenges others to prove their stance, while dismissing their own beliefs as irrelevant. The discussion highlights the contentious nature of the topic and the difficulty in providing irrefutable proof in scientific debates. Ultimately, the author emphasizes the profit-driven nature of companies and the lack of data supporting their claims about research suppression.

johnm214 said:

I am backing up my claim, I have research and rational inquiry. What kind of evidence do you need and what makes you think that this evidence is available, even if it exists? Do you want to see two men in black suits approach a researcher with a bag of money with dollar signs on it???

:rofl2:

This is ridiculous. Do you think that if there was a suppression of research that such evidence would be available to anyone, let alone someone in with mine or your distinctions? The evidence that I would be able to provide is common sensical but you SIR, fail to address this and I will post it one more time.

Do you honestly think that companies would fund research that could potentially put an end to the profitability of their products, of which they have sole rights to? Do you think that the companies who mass produce treatments for cancer would fund research that could potentially eliminate almost all their profits? The answer to this question is relevant, highly relevant, because the road of the investigation we are undertaking is not paved with solid proof, such as a video or a document that shows a company intentionally suppressing research in the field that I am talking about. There has nonetheless, been cases where companies distort/suppress research in order to expedite the market availability of their drugs, which lends to the idea that it is highly likely that they would suppress such research and/or never fund any study that would be significant enough to draw conclusions from.

Quote:
Isn't your point that companies are not intentionally suppressing the branching of research into these therapies?

No, that was your straw man, I never claimed that.

I never claimed many things you say I claim but I don't call it a straw man, I attempt to clear it up instead and I expect you to do the same.

Quote:

"you too" is not a rebuttal.  That others are allegedly wrong on other matters has nothing to do with the sufficiency of your argument (or indeed, the failure of you to even provide one) on another point.

How can a counter-point and its proof have no relevance to the point being made originally. If say gravity does not exist and you say 'prove it', wouldn't it be faster to just show me why it does exist and end the argument. But again, I think you are simply ignoring the fact of the matter.

There IS NO DATA. HOLY FUCK. Thats what I am arguing largely, that the is no data and that I suspect that this is being done with intention.  Incorrect/unsupported claims will be rejected in the normal course of the work in the field through inconsistant results being produced by the next research on that topic or attempt to replicate claims of sufficient importance.

Finally. Now, you do know that companies have historically distorted/suppressed research with their monies in the past, right? This shows me that they have the potential to do it again and that your claim above is irrelevant, incredulous and misleading.

Funding can come in many different shapes and forms. It can come in the form of bribes, development grants for facilities to perform research and many other non-conventional ways. My university was given huge grants for research facilities and it just so happened that they company who gave the grants, would benefit from the research being done, as it was relevant to the product that they were trying to market.

Further, private research is generally owned by the buisness if federally-funded, Id., and essentially always owned by the buisness if privately funded per the employee's contract.

I haven't even seen an argument in support of it, let alone any support for such.

How can research and "inquiry" support an argument that you haven't even made?  All I've seen is your bare claim.

I see now, for the third time, you've brought out the money-to-researcher appeal to incredulity.  As i replied last time: I fail to see what this would prove, and you've not even alleged it would satisfy any particular portion of your non-existant argument.  Just another appeal to incredulity with dubious relevance.

What would that have to do with anything?  Beyond this being more irrelevant bullshit you've apparently made up to mock, given that you've not even provided any argument in support of the disputed conclusion, it is difficult to see how this could be relevant.  Finally, you don't even allege this would have any affect on the science, so even if this fabrication were true, its hard to see why it would matter.

Instead of making up all these straw mans and going on with all these other fallacies, why don't you at least make an argument in support of your disputed fact if you still claim it to be true, and then worry about how to demonstrate the premise as true?

But do you agree with the point he made earlier: that whatever issues he's identified have resulted in some problem with the science that renders it incorrect or unusuable?

Nothing wrong with the scientific methods of research if applied without bias.  Or results reported without bias.  This is where the problem happens imo.  For an example I'm going to use the natural foods industry and their supplement claims.  Lets say they want to increase sales of a certain product.  It has an ingredient that has a tiny effect on heart health in general (as do most things) So they make this bold claim that this product "Supports  healthy heart function".  While this is technically true it is not practically true and anyone with a heart problem would be wasting their limited funds to use this product.

My personal opinion is that the modern medical profession is run like any other business with profit being the number one motivation and all promotion of interest in individual welfare is much like that label that says "supports healthy heart function"  It's a sales pitch designed to make you believe you need this product no matter if it's really the best way to deal with a problem or might cause more problems.  It's also my personal opinion that this profession uses their clout to defame  many alternatives to their treatments.  For instance I don't know how many times over my lifetime I've had a doctor tell me diet has very little to no influence on a condition that I then proved wrong by changing my diet with good results. When telling my doctor or challenging their expertise they usually get really angry at me.  I'm very selective with how I use the medical profession.  For instance I consider them generally good for physical trauma injuries. Again this is just an opinion.  I could care less what others believe on this issue as far as me trying to convince them. They'll find out for themselves. My parents both found out the hard way and some of my friends parents. :satansmoking:

Medicine really isn't science, its more like engineering, as an example.  They use various things determined via scientific research, but much of it is simply convention, following rules, or guesswork.  Its really only recently that medicine in the US has made a concerted effort to practice according to evidence, and much of the needed data simply isn't available.  As such, the choice of various treatments, drugs, and whatever isn't a scientific decision or even an application of a specific study in many cases, but a guess about what, i.e. may be the cause of the syndrome and what would be the best first choice treatment.

Similarly, supplement marketing isn notoriously bullshit.  Those people get shut down all the time by the FDA, and I've looked up the basis for some of their claims (which the big companies usually cite somewhere) and its often a pretty far stretch.

I wouldn't call either science neccesarily.

There's plenty of bias in determining what to research and how to do that research and so forth, but so what?  The results are still what they are, and the most biased, paid-off, and unscrupulous scientists still overwhelmingly produce good work.  They simply choose to study things that will help their client, don't publish unfavorable reports, or draw conclusions that reach a bit.

None of that hampers the process, as their methods are published and tested (and if not the results are pretty much dismissed out of hand as garbage).  Even the most renowned scientist has his work tested, especially if its groundbreaking.  Some guy outright lieing (which simply doesn't happen much because he looses credibility, grants, and can't get published or hired) happens rarely (and hardly ever in 'bad faith', i.e. just an overzealous guy trying to report results first, but lieing about what he did).  Even when such lies are made, it isn't a big deal, as any signifigant result is treated with trepidation untill independantly verified.

I simply don't see the problem here which would render the science wrong or untrustworthy.  The very foundation is openness and verification, and nobody's taking somebody's word for something that can't be proven independantly.

I agree, science is not wrong or untrustworthy in that it's the best tool we've got.

They simply choose to study things that will help their client, don't publish unfavorable reports, or draw conclusions that reach a bit.

It's people that are untrustworthy and it's up to the individual imo to find out how and act in their own self defense.

Basically, and even the trustworthy ones make mistakes all the time.  The conclusions of a paper are often hypothetical (yet are trumpeted by media as if factual) but even the specific focus of the report may be reported incorrectly due to any number of things going wrong.  By far, most of these cases are honest mistakes, but it's really the same problem either way, and this is why single reports of controversial or new result are not treated as authoritative untill validated in a well-designed study by an outside unaffiliated group.

I think a big problem is people read things in the paper or on those supplements and then think science is crap (i.e. the notorious egg health debate on dietary cholesterol vs dietary fat), when reallly the reports they've read are flat out inaccurate.  What usually happnes is the media reads the conclusions of the reports and prints some speculative explanation for the results from the study as if it were fact and without the caveats the author added nor the contradictory evidence from other research.

This is how I've seen a lot of bullshit get blamed on science that wasn't actually supported in the first place.  I know Mr. Mushrooms had justified distrust as a result of this process, I just think he ended up blaming science when it was his source (newsweek, time, newspapers, et cet) that were mesing things up.

Not sure if it's relevant to the discussion, but the FDA spent over 15 years in court trying to shut down the Burzynski Clinic. Burzynski is currently conducting phase 3 trials, a first for a non-corporate entity.

I am backing up my claim, I have research and rational inquiry. What kind of evidence do you need and what makes you think that this evidence is available, even if it exists? Do you want to see two men in black suits approach a researcher with a bag of money with dollar signs on it???

Where did you back up your claim?

I haven't even seen an argument in support of it, let alone any support for such.

How can research and "inquiry" support an argument that you haven't even made?  All I've seen is your bare claim.

I see now, for the third time, you've brought out the money-to-researcher appeal to incredulity.  As i replied last time: I fail to see what this would prove, and you've not even alleged it would satisfy any particular portion of your non-existant argument.  Just another appeal to incredulity with dubious relevance.

Quote:
And? You've never heard of a corrupt politician???

Another straw man, fantastic.  I didn't say that and you haven't shown any relevance.  Just another fabricated position you ridicule without explanation.

Quote:
LET ME JUST BRING UP THE VIDEO OF THE HEAD OF THE RESEARCH FUNDING TAKING A BRIBE FROM BAYER OR FIZER. HOLD ON A SEC, KTHXBYE.

Okay, lets simplify all of this; what proof do you need to show that my claims are true???

You still haven't answered this.

What would you like to see to show you that medical corporations are corrupt to the bone and suppress information/intentionally deny researching something that would make them loose money???

I would like to see that ground breaking research come out of countries like North Korea where the corporations have no power and a lone researcher could easily defect to and share the cure with.

Do a little research on Burzynski, if you doubt corporations try to suppress technology they perceive to be a threat to their business models.

I've hesitated to bring it into the conversation because I'm not sure it's relevant to the OP. Nothing is taboo, if at least one person is researching it. Taboo is really a matter of degree, and cannot apply to the population as a whole.

That is happening with so many people now a days.

It has already happened to my brother whom suffered incredibly from a skin disorder, to the point of suicide.

Fortunately, an alumni of my university was giving a talk on environmental problems and he happened to mention that the media/scientific establishment and the government) are in the pockets of the wealthy. He went on to tell his own story of Cancer and how his doctors gave him 18 months of life, WITH thousands of dollars of chemo/surgery and radiation. Being a researcher he asked his doctors and specialists of research he found in Japan about a natural health supplement that increases chances of survival significantly and anecdotal evidence that it can eliminate the illness without the need of conventional therapy. Long story short, they laughed at him and he stormed out worried and confused. Turns out he beat his stage four stomach cancer, by taking all natural supplements, doing yoga/meditation and most importantly, eating a macro-biotic diet.

The results were staggering and he developed a program that helped heal over 12 very trustworthy and what many doctors would claim to be 'loopy' people with cancer, all stages of cancer, over the course of 5 years.

He then changed his focus to the more pressing environmental problems that his children would face, which brought him to lecture us.

Luckily, I began to research and found plenty of anecdotal evidence that shows that the raw food diet has an incredibly positive and curative effect on all types of diseases, particularly cancer/heart disease and skin disorders.

I gave my brother on the brink of suicide a diet regimen for the disease that he suffered from for over 5 years and which we spent of 10 000 dollars on prescriptions to help.

The results were staggering - just one month after he began the diet, his disease was compleltly eliminated.

It has been over 2 and a half years and he has not had any sign that it has returned. He also began to eat, red meat and processed foods again, without any problems. He has however, kept 50% of his diet healthy and raw/vegetarian.

Another interesting example is light bulbs. It's possible to create filament bulbs that have an indefinite lifespan. The longest burning bulb was lit in 1904 and is still burning. Bad business model, so the manufacturers got together and created standards. For many years no one was allowed to make bulbs that were rated for more than 1000 hours. Today you can find institutional filament bulbs that are long lasting (in a relative way), but the standard consumer bulbs are short lived.
